Say what?!

I have to wonder which book the negative reviewers are reviewing.
As to the complaint that there is no pronunciation guide to English or Spanish, for example, the first page of the Spanish side starts with a description of the Spanish alphabet followed by a pronunciation guide to Spanish; corresponding features appear on the very first page of the English side, too.
I am a professional Spanish translator, and I refer to this book for specialized medical terms when I translate. I also make use of the abbreviation conversion table (which, unfortunately, is alphabetized only in English alphabetical order, making it hard to go from a Spanish abbreviation to an English one), and the helpful conversion tables for roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
The main fault with this book is that there could be more. If you are looking for diseases, conditions, or symptoms, or even sample examination interview questions (organized by topic in an appendix), it's great! But if you are looking for the translations for medicines, you can pretty much forget about finding them (acetaminophen? amoxicillin? pseudoephedrine? hardly uncommon medicines, but not in here), but perhaps that is a subject worthy of its own separate volume. Still, if you are wanting help talking to your Spanish-speaking patients about their illnesses, conditions, and treatments--and assuming that you have no reason to use the Spanish words for the medicines anyway--this is an excellent resource to buy, to get familiar with, and to have on hand. I always recommend it to any doctor, nurse, or paramedic who asks me for a good Spanish medical reference.

Best Medical Spanish Dictionary I've Used

In the past 10 years, as a medical interpreter and health care professional, I've tried at least half a dozen medical Spanish dictionaries and this is by far the best, most accurate, and most comprehensive. It has much more of the technical vocabulary one would use in conversation with other health care providers than any other, yet still has the words that patients understand. I highly recommend it, though it may be a bit overwhelming for beginners -- it's not as useful as a "quick reference" for someone who doesn't speak a lot of Spanish.

This dictionary is an excellent reference tool for Spanish speakers at all levels of proficiency. It was recommended to me by a full-time interpreter at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. After having reviewed other dictionaries, I decided on this one as the best and have recommended it to all my students.

PreSchool-K-McCutcheon's song, written from the point of view of adoptive parents, is joyous and reassuring-"Whatever you learn, whoever you know,/You've still got a home in our hearts." Paschkis's folklike gouache paintings are attractive and well designed to incorporate the text. However, they illustrate more than the annual celebration. They show scenes of the (Caucasian) adoptive parents making preparations for the baby's arrival, the adoptive parents in an airplane, the (Asian) baby in its new cradle, and the growth of the child. In every scene, everyone is smiling. The song mentions mixed-race and single-parent families: "No matter the skin, we are all of us kin." But another line in that verse sends a confusing message: "No matter how you came to be." That line, from the parents' point of view, is a message of acceptance, but a child may understand it as "It shouldn't matter to you how you came to be." The book reinforces the second interpretation by not picturing the baby before its appearance in the adoptive home, as though it had no history of its own. The relinquishment that precedes adoption does matter to the adoptee but is often hard for adoptive parents to talk about. This book does not help them to do so.

Young listeners will spot the same tot three years later surrounded by family and friends at his adoption day party. The peppy prose ("Hip, hip, hip, hooray!") and pictures with large, simple figures, flowing lines, and floral motifs celebrate a world where "no matter the skin, we are all of us kin--We are all of us family." Cute adoption song

This book illustrates a "happy adoption day" song. The illustrations are wonderful! I'm an adoption social worker and do adoptions for kids in foster care, so it doesn't exactly lend itself to adopting from foster care, but it is a cute book. I could see using this to celebrate a child's annual adoption anniversary, or using it to open a conversation about where the child was born and what their adoption story is. I would recommend this book for ages 0-10.

Wonderful Gift

We received this book (and the companion CD - Family Garden) as a gift for our daughters adoption day. In our family (three kids and counting - by adoption) we celebrate adoption days in much the same way as birthdays with cake, presents songs etc. That is where this book comes in. It is absolutely perfect. On each childs adoption day, they blow out the candles on the cake and we open this book, put in the CD and all sing together. The kids absolutely love it and you can see in their eyes whether it is their day or not, that there is a deep and loving meaning to the whole process which makes this so much more than just a book and a song. As I said to my sister who gave it to us, it is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Wishing you many happy adoption days.

The Secret Keepers is a tautly suspenseful, dark and mysterious novel

I'd never read Trenton Lee Stewart's previous novels, especially the Mysterious Benedict Society series which is hugely popular, and I was curious to learn what the source of this popularity was. The Secret Keepers is a darker novel than I had expected with a lonely, somewhat troubled child wandering around a decaying, older city. The lead character is named Reuben and while he is out investigating some of the more mysterious locations in the city, he discovers an extraordinary antique pocket watch during a particularly stressful episode that results from his carelessness and slightly reckless behavior.

Reuben soon learns that the pocket watch has a secret and mysterious power and his largely feral life takes an interesting turn. He is initially quite excited about his newly discovered treasure, but the watch seems to possess its own destiny which it insists that he share with it. Its power soon becomes obvious as one dark secret leads to another and Reuben is confronted with a multitude of dilemmas that pit his basic honesty and reserved nature against the powerful allure of fame and heroism.

Like so many literary reluctant heroes, Reuben must deal with the stark reality that he's been thrust into a dangerous adventure filled with a host of strange characters, a series of threatening events that might end in disaster and some unlikely, last minute escapes. All of this occurs while he's busily rushing to solve the central mysteries that confront him before he finds himself another victim of this unknown power. There are helpful friends that he meets along the way but Reuben must outwit and defeat a strange and powerful villain called The Smoke and his evil defenders called the Directions and rescue his already decaying city from its awful destiny.

Stewart is a fine writer who tautly builds suspense as he reveals the central mysteries that lay at the heart of the novel. The novel is a bit dark and some readers may even find it slightly depressing at the beginning, but once it gets rolling and Stewart's inventiveness draws you into Reuben's world, you'll find yourself enjoying his adventures and relishing the opportunity to satisfy your own curiosity by uncovering all of the mysteries that confront its young hero. My first experience reading this writer has been a good one and I'm looking forward to reading the Mysterious Benedict Society series.

Another Winner!

All I had to say was "Trenton Lee Stewart," and my kids' faces lit up! They absolutely love The Mysterious Benedict Society series, and look for a new title from this author every time we're in a bookstore. So, when I saw The Secret Keepers, I knew I had to snag it.

My twelve-year-old daughter started it Wed night and had it done before lunch on Thursday - and that was with mid-week church services and a morning of grocery shopping limiting her reading time! She's my fastest reader and most avid reader, but she also just could not put it down and found all sorts of creative ways to read while doing other things at the same time.

Here's what she has to say about The Secret Keepers:

"I loved this book! It is excited and mysterious, as well as having a well done plot that makes you not want to put it down. The Secret Keepers isn't too complicated to follow, but it still leaves the reader guessing as to what happens next, right up to the end. It is definitely a book I will be reading again!"

She also said that she was surprised that the author was able to wrap up such a full plot line in a single book, after having read his multi-book series. But, she felt that the resolution was great. Now her brother (9) and sister (15) are ready to dive in, and I'll be ordering a copy as a gift for the friends who introduced us to this author.

How to Get What You Want Without Being Mean

Wonderfully cute, but also somewhat independent, fiery and kinda bossy at times --- that's Arthur's sister, D.W.!

In this story, D.W. is feeling especially bossy. She tries to boss around everyone in the Read household to get her way. But when she goes to far, she's in for a surprise.

Featuring a great, easy-to-read story and the wonderful, richly colored full-page illustrations that are the trademark of this recent line of "Arthur" books. Also includes a bonus chocolate cake recipe on the back cover.

Possible Future Season Six Spoilers...?

So...this is it, right? The final Princess Book? I wonder if Twilight is jealous, because the other three got hardback books while she just got a paperback one. Although, hers was the first, so there's that...

Reader, ye be warned here and now: I'm pretty sure this book contains SPOILERS for upcoming season six episodes. Or maybe it's just one episode. I don't know, as I haven't seen the episode(s) yet. Or maybe G.M. Berrow is just inventing stuff, in which case, can I get another Princess Cadance book please? Because this Alicorn has a backstory that I would like to hear.
Oh, minor spoilers for the book too, as well as the first two episodes of season 6.

So, the Crystal Empire isn't fairing too well at the moment. After the events of The Crystalling, in which Cadance's and Shining Armor's daughter, Flurry Heart, shattered the Crystal Heart, the Crystal Heart has been a bit unstable. Cadance has been trying to keep it together using her magic--remember, she is the Princess of Love and the Crystal Heart is powered by Love--but it's getting harder and harder for her. She had planned to throw a huge party by gathering all the Crystal ponies and have their love power the thing, but over half the citizens are sick and can't make it. What's a Princess to do?
Apparently, have a vision of the future (yeah...we'll get to that in a second) of a garden, with lots of ponies in it laughing and having a good time. Thus, Cadance sets off to restore the Crystal Palace's old garden in hopes of making her vision of laughing ponies come true. But she's not doing it alone. Figuring that maybe some little foals (although the book calls them teenagers, which I had a really hard time swallowing so we'll just say they're the same age as the CMC) would like to help, she recruits a class touring the castle to come play in the dirt with her.
Too bad one of the fillies in the group doesn't appreciate it, and sets out to ruin everyone's time. What follows is a little bit of a brat pony who endangers the ENTIRE CRYSTAL EMPIRE out of spite (although she didn't mean for it to go that far...), Cadance learning that her future vision shouldn't be the only thing she relies on, and some interesting thoughts on what it's like for an entire race of ponies to be gone for a thousand years.

Okay, I'll address my one real complaint about the book now. The "villain", if she can be called one, Olivine. She is apparently the Crystal Empire's Diamond Tiara. The girl is a moody little brat who is upset that no one pays attention to her or wants to be her friend, but the reason no pony wants to is because she's so strung up and moody. You've probably come across her character-type before, to be honest. However, what really bugs me is that is what she does, and what doesn't happen to her.
She sabotages the garden with plants that drive ponies into laughing fits for HOURS, among other things. Have you ever laughed until you hurt? Yeah, now imagine doing that for hours and hours...Thus, Olivine most likely causes physical torture to ponies, endangers the Crystal Heart (and she knew the Crystal Heart was in danger because she saw it at the start), thereby endangering the whole Empire--because if the Heart fails, the Empire is overtaken by the Frozen North--but she gets off pretty much scot-free. Yes, she gets about two sentences worth of stern talking to from her mom, but that's it. Now, I didn't want her thrown in a dungeon, but maybe ground her or something?
Thankfully, the rest of the book is about Cadance running around trying to fix the garden, and in doing so we get a glimpse at her character AWAY from the other Princesses, and even Shining Armor, which is a nice change. It's fun to see what this Alicorn is like when she's alone. Fun fact: turns out she's a total slob, tossing her clothing all over her room instead of hanging it up. It's little things like that that really make this book fun to read.

And what's Shining Armor doing during this? Well...let's get into those potential season six SPOILERS, shall we? Starting with our Prince.

Shining Armor receives a letter from Princess Celestia, and it clearly bugs him. However, when Cadance asks to see it, he hides it from her, telling her that she should just worry about fixing the garden and the Heart. When pressed, all he says is that Princess Celestia wants him to train more soldiers. And that's it. We're never told what was in the letter, or why Celestia suddenly felt like he should train more guards. Convenient excuse to get Shining Armor out of the book, or a hint that something is going down in the Crystal Empire soon? Remember, if you will, the lone Changeling we saw at the end of the The Crystalling...

Next is Princess Cadance's sudden ability to get future vision--or rather, she's had this ability since she was little. What, you didn't know that? Oh, come on. She got it when she defeated Prismia. Don't remember who that is? She's the pony that Cadance mentions in Twilight's book. Honestly, can we just get an episode showing how this Alicorn came to be? It sounds like she's got a pretty killer backstory, taking down an enchantress when she was just a filly. I wouldn't be surprised if this new power shows up in a future episode as well.
But now for the real killer--or maybe I'm just missing an episode or my memory is going. Has Princess Cadance ever spent time with the CMC in the show? If she has, please tell me, because I don't remember it. Yet in the book, she says that she just recently had them remind her about how a cutie mark doesn't define you, it's just a part of you. Or something like that; I'm paraphrasing. The point is, it made it sound like Cadance had been struggling with her cutie mark--or maybe one of her subjects was--and the CMC came in the help. Correct me if I'm wrong, but not only does that sound EXACTLY like what the CMC do now that they have their cutie marks, but we also haven't SEEN them doing this yet. At least not with Cadance around. Future episode, perhaps? I think so.

Bottom Line: Cadance's adventure is going on a grand epic like Celestia's, nor is it dealing with grief and guilt like Luna's, but hers is no less fun to read. We get to see a side of her that hasn't really had a chance to shine in the show just yet (if you're read the comics, you've probably got a better grasp of her character), and it's kind of interesting seeing how some of these Crystal Ponies cope with being gone for so long. I just wish Olivine's character had gone more along the lines of, "I was just trying to help but goofed!" instead of the moody angst "I'm-going-to-ruin-your-fun-because-you're-ignoring-me" character.

A few, such as Tennessee Williams's bizarre tale of revenge, offer little evidence of future literary brilliance, but most invite thoughtful comparisons with more mature works. Shirley Jackson's "After You, My Dear Alphonse" anticipates "The Lottery" in its dramatization of ingrained but unexamined cultural assumptions. Chester Himes evokes the deadly monotony of prison life, Kurt Vonnegut explores the dilemma of a scientist who wishes to use his power for peace and David Leavitt examines tensions between a mother and her gay son. Some juvenile pieces by John Cheever, Carson McCullers and John Updike focus on the callowness of youth, while others by Margaret Atwood, Truman Capote and Flannery O'Connor capture the acute loneliness and dislocation of old age. Brief but intelligent headnotes provide information about the genesis of several stories (some reprinted here for the first time) and occasionally correct misconceptions about publication history.

This book takes an interesting look at the debuts of over 40 important authors. Most readers will think they know everything there is to know about these authors-who include William Faulkner, Alice Walker, and John Updike-but these early works are decidedly different from most of the classic writings. All the stories have a short preface that profiles the author and explains how the story was published. For instance, the preface to Hemingway's "In Our Time" notes that he always offered conflicting accounts of which story he published first. Though some authorities argue that "Up in Michigan" was his debut, "In Our Time"-a work that reveals Hemingway's absolute power with the art of adventure telling-has been verified as his first adult work. In a brief introduction, Jane Smiley expands on the good work done in the prefaces, suggesting how hard it is to get published and what authors have to go through to achieve that goal. Highly recommended for all libraries.

In 1978, a sailor's log of apparently little value surfaced in Vevay, Ind., and the notebook was eventually discovered to have been penned in 1827 by a 17-year-old sailor named Augustus Strong, stationed aboard the Dolphin, a U.S. Navy schooner dispatched to rescue surviving members of a mutiny in the South Pacific. Using Strong's 150-page record as a primary source, Gibson (Gone Boy), a collector of rare maritime books, retells the shocking tale of the gore-drenched mutiny aboard the whaler Globe. The mutiny was led by rogue Samuel Comstock so the 21-year-old could sail to the remote Marshall Islands, where he intended to build a kingdom for himself and enlist the natives in his private army. Word of the mutiny prompted the rescue voyage of the Dolphin and Strong's personal ledger. While Gibson diligently recounts the building of the Globe and the history of Nantucket whaling as well as the life and hard work aboard a whaler the chronicling of the mutiny lacks punch and the key figures are devoid of significant character. By the time Gibson personally visits the isle of Comstock's landing and death, readers might find it difficult to share the author's interest in what comes across as a bloody though bland story. A whaling vessel built in 1815, the Globe was 78 feet long and staffed by a crew of 21; that one of the crew members was a psychopath bent on taking over the ship, killing his shipmates, and retiring to a South Pacific island to rule the natives seems more like fiction but in January 1825 became fact. In the early chapters of this well-written narrative, Gibson (Gone Boy: A Walkabout) details the dangerous vocation of whaler in the early 1800s, and his recent discovery of a journal by a sailor aboard the navy vessel sent to rescue the survivors of the mutiny is of interest. Gibson's chapters on shipbuilding could have been omitted, as this subject is addressed elsewhere, but once the voyage is under way the real adventure begins. The scheming Samuel Comstock was slain three weeks after committing his evil deeds on the Marshall Islands, leaving his final goal of becoming king unfulfilled. Over 30 pages of notes and a 120-title bibliography attest to Gibson's impressive research on this topic. Recommended for public libraries with maritime interests. In the 1820s, when South America was fighting for independence, whaling was a huge industry, and for the intractable Samuel Comstock, it seemed a suitable career. To see the boy gainfully employed in a highly disciplined environment must have seemed a relief to his parents. Yet Comstock quickly grew to hate whaling and fantasized about taking over a ship and becoming king of an island. A year after signing onto the Globe, Comstock led a violent mutiny, which became known as one of the most infamous crimes in American maritime history. Gibson's account details the history of Nantucket whaling and even describes the shipbuilding process. This makes for interesting reading and marginally helpful background, but spans many pages, making his coverage of the actual mutiny and the fate of the Globe sailors somewhat brief relative to the book's size. Demon of the Waters stands out from the rest of the books I've found in the whaling adventure genre. Gibson's research is unsurpassed. He provides such varied information on whaling to satisfy anyone's appetite for adventure and knowledge, providing background on how he came across the story of the Globe mutiny and what he discovered during the course of his quest to get to the root of the story as well as the history of whaleship making in Nantucket's heyday. Unlike many other books of this type, the author doesn't bog you down with chapter after chapter of excruciating biographical detail of every crew member aboard the ship. He skillfully chooses to include the relevant information that is pertinent to the story. The mutiny on the Globe is strikingly depicted; the story is unfathomable and never lacks for an unexpected twist. It will haunt you for many days after you finish the book!

I much appreciated the chapters on the nitty-gritty of whaling terms and slang, and what went on step-by-step in felling a whale. Gibson merges thorough research with an incredible tale to create a must-read for any fan of whaling and adventure.

Advice to future readers: notice that the middle section of the book contains illustrations and pictures. I discovered this a little late and would have liked to have noticed it earlier to aid my understanding. I wish Gibson would have referenced them in the text. Overall, an EXCELLENT whaling book. I HIGHLY recommend it. If you enjoy true tales of whaling adventure, I also recommend Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea, Neil Hanson's The Custom of the Sea, and Robert Blackwood Robertson's Of Whales and Men.

Well-researched; A true adventure/discovery story

This is a story about mutiny, a lost journal, and whaling. It begins by telling the reader of the lost journal and how it fell into the hands of the author, who is a used book seller. He is a very knowledgeable bookseller. The reader is the beneficiary of his careful research. We are informed of early U.S. diplomatic relations, political intrigue (often found in the end-notes), and possible literary connections with a famous author. In particular, I found the information about how ships and crews hunted and harvested whales to be rich and insightful. This knowledge alone is worth buying the book.

Nevertheless, the reader is informed of the tight-knit whaling community of Nantucket and its global importance in the whaling industry. The business of whaling is lightly explored. Nantucket's people were recognized as experts and sought after around the world. The author tells briefly of other countries who lured away the little island's whaling experts because of their vast knowledge of whaling.

Then there is the story of the whaleship Globe. Unlike similar books, we are provided with the ship's history. We are taken on a particular voyage with a newly appointed captain and crew. It is this voyage which becomes notorious. The crew itself is mostly boys who are unltimately influenced (frightened?) by another older crew member with a subtle but forebodding history. The muntiny itself is descriptive and haunting--perhaps a vivid reminder of Hobbes' oft-used quote of life being "nasty, brutish, and short." What happens after the mutiny is as interesting as the events leading up to it.

We have a daring escape from the mutineers with only PART the young crew. Without a navigator, they somehow find their way to a continent almost half a world away. Reports of their adventure eventually find there way back to the U.S. We are reminded of how painfully slow news travelled in the 19th century, and how difficult it was to obtain accurate information.

What happened to those people left behind? That is the subject of the newly discovered journal. We are provided with the details by a young aspiring sailor/writer who was part of a rescue mission. It is fondly read and critiqued by our author. We are provided with the details of the fates of those left behind.

The author goes so far as to visit the island where the mutineers came ashore, and allows us to feel the sand under our own feet. After 175 years, he notes the changes in the landscape brought about by war and the passage of time.

Another unexpected gem in this book is the suggestion of the influence this book had on Herman Melville. The author posits just enough to make you think he relied on much more than the story of the Essex.

An enjoyable read.

Great mixture of history, adventure and tragedy.

I highly recommend this book to all who like to read about toll ships and see adventures.
Painstakingly, masterfully written, book embraces detailed description of whaling ships and their role in making many Nantuckers rich, as well as many aspects of human life during the "golden" era of whaling for oil industry. But not only this.
We have many historical details about early Pacific navigations and about competition for dominance in this region between France, Britain and Americans.
We will learn with fascination how white sailors encountered first time and clashed with other cultures and tribes of Pacific islands; also, how the toll ships were build on Nantucket Island at the beginning of the 19th century and who was involved in those projects.
And of course the main theme - gruesome events on the deck of the "Globe" and on the Mili atoll (Marshall islands), where two cultures met suddenly by surprise and got stunned - beautifully woven into the whole text.
Masterpiece, Mr. Gibson, no doubt. It should be considered as continuation of "In the Heart of the Sea".
