Fun History Mystery for Summer Reading

All in all, this was a thrilling read. This book is a fast read and I had a hard time putting the book down because something was always happening. It was humorous reading how Nell and Aunt Kitty would disguises themselves, assume aliases and go undercover to foil different criminals in their nefarious plots to get away with murder and theft. While Nell wasn't a real person, like her Aunt, readers will finish wishing she had been. This is a great book for Summer reading.
This book was quite adventurous and I enjoyed reading about Nell and Aunt Kitty's undercover exploits. I appreciate the author introducing kids to the story of heroic Kate Warne, a real-life person who worked in Victorian-era America as the first female operative for the famous Pinkerton Detective Agency. Nell is a likeable, strong-willed character who speaks her mind and isn't afraid to get into dangerous situations if it means catching a criminal.
This book explores a few factual events during a turbulent time in U.S. History,; just before the outbreak of the Civil War, when states were seceding from the Union and picking sides. There are even hints, through Nell's friend's (Jemma) letters to her about the Underground Railroad. The author creates plausible scenarios for Nell and Kate's detective work. And it was intriguing to learn a little more about the factual Baltimore Plot, which attempted to assassinate Abraham Lincoln on his way to his inauguration. Though I wish the books plot had centered around this theme more, like the book synopsis promised.
I would recommend this book for kids who like history and fierce, independent heroines. There were though, just a few minor things about this book that bothered me (thus the 4 star rating). These little frustrations should not detour you from reading this book, but prepare you to have an open mind.
1. Jemma's constant referral of her father, in her letters to Nell, as "Maple Tree". It's supposed to be a code name in case the girls' letters were to fall into the wrong hands, but after the first time hearing the nickname it was obvious who the "Maple Tree" was. Writing "father" in the rest of her letters would have been much more pleasing for the reader.
2. In fact Jemma's letter themselves are a bit annoying. They occur throughout the book after almost every other chapter or two. They help the reader learn about Nell's past and how her father died, as well as Aunt Kitty's husband, but the whole time I wanted to just skip them and read more about Nell's adventuresome undercover detective work with her Aunt. I wanted to learn Nell's future, not her past.
3. The character of Aunt Kitty is hard to like. She's a bit too hard-hearted and hard-headed throughout the whole story. It's only towards the end that she finally softens her edginess towards Nell. She blames Nell's father for the death of her husband and so therefore takes it out on Nell. I left feeling like the real Kate Warne was a mean person in real life, though I know that was probably not true. I understand that women had to be tough during this time period, and that Kate was trying to carve out a career in a man's world, but her character didn't have to be so unlikeable most all of the time. At times I forgot she was a lady, which is still how any woman would have conducted herself, whether undercover or in the safety of her own home.
4. The persistent mentioning of Nell's boots. Sure they save her, and everyone else, in the end, but I hated reading about them through the whole book, in what seemed like every chapter. I understand they are Nell's only real physical link to her deceased father and like a sort of security blanket, but NO girl, lady or woman during the nineteenth-century would wear men's boots out and about in everyday society. On a farm yes, on city streets no. No one would even bother talking to a girl like Nell if she wore men's boots. And it's unbelievable that Nell could get away with some of her disguises wearing them. For a book that tries to be so factual in its storytelling, this was a very off-putting detail to work around.

Intriguing Story-Line!

As an avid reader (some people would say rabid!) reader of historical fiction, I really enjoyed this one! The premise of a young girl of the 1860's becoming connected with President Lincoln as an assistant sleuth was intriguing.
Overall reaction:
An excellent book for engaging readers in American history. The main character is a spunky girl and there's lots of action, based in a historical setting. I think this would appeal to American Girl history-book lovers, especially those that have advanced to higher reading levels.

Eleven-year-old Cornelia Warne is destitute when she shows up on her aunt’s doorway in Chicago one day in 1859. Her parents and siblings have all died, and Aunt Kitty is the only relation she has left in the world. But her aunt isn’t exactly thrilled to see her. As the first female working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency, she often has to go in disguise or slip away to other cities. She thinks Nell, as Kitty decides to call her, would only be a burden and probably better off in the Home for the Friendless.
Nell decides to prove her value and win a place in Kitty’s home as well as her heart. She makes herself useful around the boarding house, and she even gets to help out with some detective work. But before she can feel truly accepted, she’ll have to unravel the mystery of what happened the night Kitty’s husband died, splitting the family apart.
The Detective’s Assistant by Kate Hannigan is funny and touching while also shedding light on such historical happenings as the Underground Railroad, boarding house life, the tensions leading up to the Civil War, and Abraham Lincoln’s election and first inauguration. Nell is a wholly delightful character who can be both perceptive and clueless as to what’s going on around her. She likes to read newspapers, has to work hard at learning correct grammar, and thinks the fashions of the day are silly even if she does want to wear them. She’ll clomp her way to your heart while wearing her daddy’s boots and have you cheering for her every step of the way.
I highly recommend The Detective’s Assistant for mother-daughter book clubs with girls aged 8 to 12.
