The New Guy (and Other Senior Year Distractions), by Amy Spalding

Filled with romance, rivalry, and passive-aggressive dog walking, Amy Spalding delivers a hilariously relatable story about how even the best-laid plans sometimes need to be rewritten.
What's the only thing that could derail overachiever Jules's perfect senior year? Alex Powell--former member of boy-band sensation Chaos 4 All and newest transfer to Eagle Vista Academy.
Alex seems cool enough when he starts spending time with Jules. In fact, he turns out to be quite the romantic (not to mention a killer kisser). And after getting over the initial shock that someone like Alex might actually like like her, Jules accepts that having a boyfriend could be a nice addition to her packed schedule. That is, until Alex commits the ultimate betrayal, which threatens to ruin her high school career, and possibly her entire future.
This. Means. War.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—Jules McCallister-Morgan has first-world problems. It's her senior year, and this overachieving, neurotic, privileged perfectionist might possibly explode unless a few things happen first: 1) her favorite Ivy League school accepts her application, and 2) she becomes the new editor in chief of her high school's newspaper. Just as things seem to be going well for Jules, her senior year veers off course when she falls for a hot former boybander with a mysterious past. Then, a rival journalist creates a video newscast, throwing her beloved newspaper under the bus. Even her volunteer job as a dog walker is compromised. It doesn't take long before there is an all-out, vicious war between the print and the video journalists, with Jules at the helm. Spalding excels at creating flawed characters whose own issues and mistakes propel the plot forward. Readers will grind their teeth over some of Jules's narcissistic and selfish decisions, such as publishing a hurtful article about a person she really cares about and ignoring and lying to her best friend for months. Her change of perspective at the end feels a bit contrived but does create a satisfying end. Jules's two moms add a layer of diversity, but many readers will find this Los Angeles prep school drama difficult to relate to. VERDICT A cute and fluffy read, this book will appeal to those who want a gentle high school drama with a touch of romance.—Leighanne Law, Scriber Lake High School, WA

Fame, overachieving, first love, and new media
By Johanna Draper Carlson
A fun YA read that combines ideas about fame (and losing it), overachievement, first love, and whether newspapers are still relevant in the age of new media. I know, it sounds ambitious, but Amy Spalding pulls it out through the lead character of Jules. As The New Guy (and Other Senior Year Distractions) opens, Jules is anxiously awaiting news on whether she or Natalie will be chosen editor-in-chief of the school paper.

Jules is also part of the Reception Committee, which is how she meets new student Alex Powell. Two years ago, Alex was part of the country’s biggest boy band. But nothing matched the popularity of their first single, so the group broke up, and Alex is trying to swap from being a teen idol to fitting back into normal life… well, as normal as you get at an expensive private school populated by California rich kids.

Jules has been so focused on making herself perfect for the Ivy League college she wants to get into that she hasn’t had a boyfriend. She’s got to cope with her new crush at the same time that that her beloved newspaper is under attack from a new student-produced video show, causing some discussion as to whether print deserves to stick around for reasons other than tradition.

I really enjoyed spending time with Jules. Her reactions and concerns felt realistic, particularly for a sympathetic type of reader. She feels like the least cool of her group of friends, because she doesn’t appreciate her own unique value. Alex doesn’t get as full a treatment — some of his actions and choices aren’t as understandable — but that fits in with how teen boys seem to their friends, sometimes.

Although Jules has a lot going for her, she’s as insecure as anyone else, which leads to the bad decisions that drive the events. Yet she’s determined and good-hearted, which counts for a lot. That’s why I devoured the story in one sitting, just to see her work through to a resolution she deserves. (The publisher provided an advance digital review copy. Overall, the book was adorable, and I definitely recommend it to those looking for a quick, romantic, fluffy read.

I received this book from @thenovl newsletter giveaway in return for an honest review.

The New Guy and Other Senior Year Distractions was a quick, cute read about a girl who has her life during her senior year in high school and beyond mapped out. She plans to be the editor of the school paper, get into Brown, and boys are definitely not part of the plan. That is, until a member of a popular one-hit-wonder boy band happens to enroll.

I definitely connected with the main character, Jules. She’s driven, and she likes things to happen according to her plan. Trying to juggle her duties as the editor of the paper while dealing with the new video news group created in the school creates a rivalry between new media and print. She’s by no means perfect, even as she juggles with trying to be and dealing with the pressures she puts on herself to be everything her moms could want in a child.

One of the main conflicts in the book revolves around Jules and the new student that catches her eye, Alex Powell. Alex fell a little flat for me because I didn’t really get a sense of who he was and why Jules was so very attracted to him besides the fact that he kissed really well and was the first boy to ever really make her want to date someone. Overall, their conflicts regarding them being on different sides of the rivalry added a little spice to their romance, but the adorable dog walking dates and talks over donuts were what sold me.

I did like the theme of moving on with life, and how friendships can either last or fall apart, especially when distance is involved. Jules and Sadie were best friends since they were tiny, and now that they’re going to graduate soon, Jules is coming to terms with not being able to see her friend all the time. It’s easy to get caught up with life, but it’s important to always reach out to those that love you for help.

Overall, the book was adorable, and I definitely recommend it to those looking for a quick, romantic, fluffy read.

A Light and Fun Contemporary
By Carol
The New Guy is a light and fun book about an ambitious and passionate teenager, Jules McAllister-Morgan, in her senior year of high school. From the first page, you get a sense who Jules is and her voice and tone is clearly set for the rest of the book. Jules is vying to be the editor-in-chief of her private high school's 104-year-old newspaper, The Crest. She sees this as another checkbox on her senior year accomplishments she needs to complete in order to get into the Ivy League school of her choice. However, Jules quickly finds out that life can't be a series of checkboxes to tick off her list because things happen that are beyond her control. Enter a former teenage boyband member, Alex Powell, and the rise of a news competitor at school that threatens the livelihood of her beloved school newspaper.

I thought the story was cute and fun read and that this book is aimed primarily at a younger audience. Jules definitely has her priorities straight with her schooling, but everything that feels just a little bit trivial to me seems to be blown out of proportion in Jules mind when the school newspaper and the new video telecast for the school goes to war with one another. There are so many intense scheming scenes and antics from both sides that I think I honestly connected more with Mr. Wheeler, the newspaper advisor, when he basically tells them to chill out.

Jules and Alex felt a little too much like instalove when they suddenly get together after knowing each other for about a week. But they have a cute relationship throughout the book, and their passive-aggressiveness at dog walking is hilarious. None of the characters have passages of descriptions written on them, but based on their interactions with one another, they still feel like they jump off the page and are memorable in their own way. I love Jules and her group of friends. I only wish we saw more of them! Jules parents are definitely a nice change from your usual mom and dad couples, because "Mom" and Darcy are so lovely and have a real relationship with Jules that doesn't stand in the way of the story at all.

I would definitely recommend this for all those who enjoy a good teenage contemporary.
