The monks, who have bred and trained dogs and counseled owners for 20 years, believe that most puppies, if treated "carefully and intelligently," will grow into happy, adult companions. In their guide to raising puppies, they discuss growth phases, critical periods, and feral instincts. Emphasis is on preventing problems before they arise. The monks show how to recognize various temperaments, and how to care for and train the puppies properly. Libraries that already have Carol Benjamin's Mother Knows Best (Howell, 1989) or Charlotte Schwartz's The Howell Book of Puppy Raising (Howell, 1987) could forgo this. However, the popularity of the monks' first book, How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend (LJ 9/15/78), may create a demand for their second.

An excellent guide for new buyers, trainers, & breeders!

The breeder we bought our german shepherd puppy from recommended this book to us. I am amazed at the work the Monks of New Skete are doing for the german shepherd breed. My hope is that all breeders would use the New Skete method with their litters. If this were done, then maybe so-called "dangerous breeds" would lose their bad rap. Surely there would be less dogs in animal shelters and pet shops.

I can not stress enough the importance of early human socialization, and the Monks of New Skete seem to agree. If you are planning on breeding a litter, I urge you to pick up this book an heed the authors advice.

This book also stresses humane training methods, and the importance of positive reinforcement. Using this method has helped with my dominant GSD pup. Constant scolding will get you nowhere. A quick pop on the lead when bad and copious amounts of praise when good makes training a happy occasion for both dog and master.

I would recommend the three tape training set "Raising Your Dog With The Monks of New Skete" along with this book. The tapes show the New Skete method from the puppy birth, to training the adult dog, and brings the information together nicely.

Highly recommended by my breeder, and me (a dog-owner but NOT a professional by any means!)

My miniature goldendoodle breeder recommended this book so I ordered it. I read reviews beforehand and after reading this from cover to cover, I'm surprised people are complaining/giving low scores because they 'disagree with certain methods of training.' Anyone reading ANY educational book should take it as that. Learn what you can, and disregard things you disagree with, it's simple. I found the information to be interesting, enlightening, and especially was intrigued by the exercise they explain for getting your pup used to dental/oral exams, being examined all-over by a vet, getting brushed/groomed, and having their nails trimmed. I am passing this to my mom who will ALSO be picking up her goldendoodle in a couple days.

I thought this book was very interesting and helpful. I do think having many other dogs around as examples help in the training of a puppy, which is why I gave only 4 stars. (help in wearing out a puppy with playing etc) If someone is training one puppy a few things will be different and more stressful.

It begins with the death of acclaimed mountain climber Jamie Matthewson near his home in craggy North Wales. When Jamie's childhood friend Rob Dewar goes to visit Matthewson's widow, Ruth, the novel steps backwards in time to recount the story of Jamie's relationship with Rob and Ruth. From their childhood onwards, Jamie and Rob share a love of mountain climbing, of the sheer danger involved in it. The two men are rivals as athletes but also as lovers, as they compete for the love of many women-from Ruth, a drifting free-spirited artist who eventually marries Jamie, to Jamie's mother herself. As Ruth's relationship with Jamie evolves, it does not necessarily cool with Rob, straining the friendship between the two. Mawer gradually reveals that the complications began before either Jamie or the narrator were born, describing the kindling of romance between Jamie's father, himself a mountain climber, Rob's mother and Jamie's mother in England during the heady years of World War II. Although the mountain-climbing descriptions sometimes threaten to overpower the novel with their intensity, their metaphorical significance always wins out. Mawer has created characters and situations that overflow with truly believable pain and exhilaration, and he endows the narrative with a surging energy that pushes the book forward, all the way to an end which, like the final line of a haiku, casts a startling light on everything that came before it.

"The Fall" Explores The Gamut Of Human Emotions - Superb!!

This is a powerhouse of a novel that will have you reading compulsively until you've turned the last page, and will leave you deep in thought long after that. "The Fall" has achieved a place on my Top 10 list of favorite works of fiction.
Rob Dewer hears on the car radio that his old friend and mountain climbing partner, Jamie Matthewson, has fallen to his death while making an almost suicidal solo climb. Although the two men have not been in touch for years, the news hits Dewer hard, stirring up a series of memories and strong, unresolved feelings from long ago. He immediately turns his car towards Wales and begins a journey, not only to bring comfort to Matthewson's widow, his old friend and former lover, Ruth, but into the past where decades old secrets and betrayals are disclosed.
Author Simon Mawer writes, "At some time or other you must confront your past. We are our past...There is nothing else, and none of it can be undone." Mawer visits the past of a group of people who are intimately connected through friendship, love, lust, jealousy, competition, hatred and blood ties. The enormous power of some of Mawer's characters is almost overwhelming at times, as is their extreme fragility and vulnerability. His prose is masterful and poignant. The plot is riveting, compelling, almost brutal, in its honesty. I have never been very interested in the sport of climbing, but Mawer's narrative transported me, time and time again, on exhilarating treks up mountainsides; the action so vividly described that I felt that I was one of the climbers. His descriptions of landscapes, both fierce and bucolic, are as visual as paintings. Mawer is indeed a master craftsman.
This is a novel of love, of moral choices and decisions that life forces us to make. Sometimes the repercussions of these decisions echo into the future, for generations to come. This is truly one of the most amazingly original novels I have read in years and it has effected me deeply. I cannot praise "The Fall" highly enough!

As Good as it gets

I do not write long reviews. I am 82 years of age and try to read at least 1 book a week and have done so most of my life. Everything from good Histories to Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Balzac, to the great mysteries of Hammett, Chandler and Michael Connelly.

Put quite simply, The Fall may be the best book I have ever read. I may be a bit carried away as I just finished it last night--in 2 days--and at the moment it is terribly fresh in my mind. They say a good book needs good metaphors--there are some awful ones in so many books that I often wish they were not there at all--but Mr Mawer's are so good I almost filled the book with underlines.

The story is about 2 boys and their parents. There are a number of very intricate loves affairs and criss-crosses, but one way or another they all make sense and keep the reader fascinated. The other big part of the story is about mountain climbing, but don't let that put you off. I think they are crazy, but it surely makes for very exciting reading. To put it squarely, I had never heard of this writer until I read a review of his newest book--not publihed here yet--in the Finanial Times--He is British- and although maybe he isn't the super man that I think, he certainly should be talked about and reviewed more prolifically in the USA

A Page Turner of the First Order

I spent a day and a half gobbling this imaginative, enveloping novel down. I don't think I need to say much more than the fans here have said already, except perhaps to add that at year's end, THE FALL is going to stand among the year's best for me, perhaps even at the number one spot. For me, everything in this tale of passion and friendship, love and betrayal, worked. Don't let the thought of the moutaineering scenes scare you off, they're superbly done, and metaphorically valid. The scenes of London during the Blitz are among the most vivid descriptions if that time I've ever read.
I look forward now to going back and reading earlier Mawber. This is definitely an incredibly versatile author with an important future.

A perfect interpretation of this well-loved song

In this fun-filled, flamboyant adaptation, a grandmother remembers riding red double-decker busses and singing this traditional song when she was a child. She shares it with her grandchildren with such animated energy while they wait for their modern-day bus, that they all get carried away in the enthusiasm of the moment and their present bus passes them right on by! This book made my toddler laugh out loud-a great accompaniment to the well-loved song.

I think this chap has a problem...

...with the great female stars, he has written many biographies of Hollywood, Broadway and West End stars and yet there is a marked difference. His books on male stars are well researched, celebratory and complimentary. In contrast his books on female stars are either scant, slight or plain nasty.

Depending on the sex of your star of choice I would give him a wide birth, even if the star is male I would consider his credibilty; which is not great in my opinion. This book is scant, silly and a real missed opportunity. It does not do the great lady any justice whatsoever!

I bought this book based on the description "lavish pictorial biography". It has only 15 pictures in it. I'm returning it and shopping for a different book with more pictures.

Patterson's most recent thriller, Hide and Seek, lacked his customary hero, Alex Cross, and didn't catch fire with readers. Here, Patterson brings back the black psychiatrist and Washington, D.C., homicide cop (Kiss the Girls, etc.) for a gripping game of death that will have fans flocking. Two simultaneous investigations bear down on Cross: the first concerns the killings perpetrated by a duo known as "Jack and Jill," who are murdering famous people (beginning with a U.S. senator) in Washington, taunting the police and "practicing for the big one"; the second involves the brutal slayings of young black children in Cross's own Southeast D.C. neighborhood. The Washington P.D. makes Cross its liaison with a frantic Secret Service, FBI and CIA while he sets up his own off-duty team to track the child-killer. Through crisp cross-cutting of multiple points of view, first-person and third, Patterson grabs readers right from the beginning and sweeps them along toward riveting dual climaxes. He adds texture by devoting space to Cross's concern about his own motherless son and daughter (the first murdered child attended the same grammar school as Alex's boy), his growing interest in the school's attractive principal, his dealings with his octogenarian grandmother, Nana Mama (think of an acerbic Dilsey from The Sound and the Fury) and life in the largely black Southeast district. It's fine, full-blooded entertainment from start to finish, with a last-page surprise from an earlier Cross nemesis promising at least one more Cross installment to come. Patterson is back with another winner featuring black Washington, D.C. detective/ psychologist Alex Cross, who is hot on the trail of yet another serial killer. This time out, however, he's faced with double trouble in the form of a killing duo calling themselves Jack and Jill, who threaten to kill politicians and celebrities until they finally reach the president. After several spectacular murders, the police and the White House start to take them seriously. At the same time, yet another psychopath is brutally murdering black schoolchildren. Whew! All of this mayhem keeps Alex jumping and the pages turning. This entry follows Patterson's usual formula of very short chapters, breakneck pacing, and grisly murders followed by a truly surprising ending, complete with an appearance of Gary Soneji, the serial killer from Along Came a Spider (LJ 12/92). Highly recommended for all public libraries.

Left Me Breathless

If you like fast-paced, nonstop thrills in your mysteries, this is the book for you. I felt like I had to stop and breathe every now and then; the plot twists, suspense, surprises, and sheer horror of the plot had me so mesmerized, I almost forgot to do so!
Like other Patterson novels, this one, the third in the Alex Cross series, features two parallel horrors, both of which involve the detective in a very personal way. First, a crazed killer is murdering young black children in Cross's own neighborhood, children from his own son's school. The sheer brutality of the murders bespeaks a rage that strikes terror in Cross's heart. But the Washington, D.C. powers that be don't seem to be overly concerned with the horrible happenings in the black neighborhood--they're much more involved with the high-profile, equally mysterious Jack and Jill murders that have captured all the headlines.
Jack and Jill are assassins. We're in on their nefarious doings from the beginning, but we don't know who they really are. And neither does the FBI, the CIA, the Secret Service, or the police. They are on a murderous timetable, assassinating increasingly well-known people as part of a single-minded, and seemingly unstoppable, track that leads to the assassination of the President of the United States. Can Cross et al. catch these fiends in time? And what of the child killer? He's got Cross's own children in his crosshairs. Will he strike at Cross's very heart and soul?
The sheer humanity and decency of Alex Cross--his intelligence, his love of his family and friends, the piano he plays on the porch to soothe his soul, the grief he still feels for his dead wife--all serve as a counterpoint to the inhumanity of the killers. Cross despairs of the human race as he encounters the horribly murdered bodies of the killers--but any world with Alex Cross in it can't be all bad. Cross sardonically refers to himself as "The Dragon Killer," and indeed he is. But this time, he just may be up against a force more evil than anything or anyone he has ever encountered before.
As I stated in a previous review, I am new to the Patterson bandwagon, and now I have no intention of getting off! On to the next book in the Cross series. Can it be as good as "Jack and Jill?" It boggles the mind.

Jack And Jill Went Up The Hill

I think this book is the best one I have read. I have read eight of the Alex Cross books so far. The story has the most complete picture of who James Patterson's Alex Cross is and what the "Dragon Slayer" does in order to stop these serial Killers. The killers are most often very intelligent psychopaths who have no feelings of guilt or remorse.
Alex goes through so much in every case that you wonder how anyone could not loose a sense of who he is. His children, grandmother, good friend and music seem to give him the mooring to keep his self coming back and going again. What diabolical people he is dealing with, "Jack and Jill" and the killer of the little children in his own neighborhood, at the same time. He does see the good in some people he interacts with and that makes thing better but you never know who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.
All in all, I believe this book could be a made into a very good movie but there is too much to tell so one of those FX network series might work.

A look into the psychological side of a sadistic killer by a psychologist/detective who is a loving father of two children who he loves dearly. It is an interesting look into the behavior of a sadist. Scary but interesting and definitely keeps you reading. And if that is not engrossing enough, there are two more killers keeping you guessing.

Don't Bother

The book is very misleading. On the outside it appears to have several pages of popups, but on opening the book, there are several illustrations, but only one popup scene of the entire cantina. The author should have given the reader several diffirent popup scenes.

Mos Eisly Cantina Pop-Up Book contains Ralph McQuarrie artwork not seen anywhere else...

The only real reason to purchase this book is to see some artwork from the great Ralph McQuarrie that isn't available anywhere else. The book includes McQuarrie paintings of Jawas and their sandcrawler, Chalmun (the Wookiee owner of the cantina), Dr. Evazan and Ponda Baba (the bad guys in the cantina who harassed Luke), Long Snoot (the spy), Hammerhead, Greedo, Figrin D'An and the Cantina Band, and other life forms on Tatooine. As far as pop-ups go, there is exactly ONE pop-up in this book. It's an impressive pop-up, showing 20+ characters in the Cantina --- but it's the only pop-up in the entire book. So, I'd really only recommend this book for Ralph McQuarrie fans.

Excellent & Action Packed Thriller following True Patterson Style! Gripping Novel from the Private series. AAA+++

James Patterson does it again with continuing the "Private series". I've been a big fan of his books, especially when the Alex Cross series came out, since it was one of my favorites. Loved the books and then the movies for Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls. I also enjoy the NYPD Red series, which is why I started in on the "Private Series". I have read other great ones, such as Private Berlin, Private London, Private Vegas and Private India to name a few. This brings us to his newest novel, Private Paris. I believe it is number eleven of the series. I got an advance reader's copy of this and some other Patterson novels from time to time.

For those that have not followed this series, Jack Morgan was a former CIA agent who is in charge of an investigation firm called "Private", with different branches all over the world. Hence the Private Paris, India, London and so forth.

This time around, Jack Morgan was all set to vacation and take a rest in Paris, when of course, he has to check in with the local branch there and you guessed it......He's obviously needed for a new case, when he receive's a call from one of his clients, Sherman Wilkerson. Sherman urged jack to help him find his missing granddaughter, who is being chased by a feral drug dealer. Along the way there is murder, mystery and mayhem throughout France, all revolving around a specific graffiti marking. The murders taking place all connect to the granddaughters disappearance and are shown in a shocking and visceral manner. It's up to Jack Morgan and his team from Private to solve this case before the tension explodes.

It's an action packed crime thriller, which Patterson excels at keeping you yanking on the next page to finish. This definitely keeps with the Patterson style all the way around. Hope it Helps:)

Big disappointment.

I am an avid reader, and James Patterson is one of my favorite authors. This was the very first book by Mr. Patterson that I just could not get through!!! It started out so so, then came to a crawl. I have to admit I skimmed through most of it and tried to read the last two chapters but couldn't even make it through them! Would not recommend this book at all. I'm hopeful that his next book is back to his great penmanship and storytelling abilities. Sorry but have to only give this 1 star.

Locating Kimberly was relatively easy. However

PRIVATE PARIS by James Patterson and Mark Sullivan features Jack Morgan, ex-Marine helicopter pilot, now founder and head of Private Investigative Services headquartered in Los Angeles with offices worldwide. Jack flies to Paris for a long awaited vacation where he receives an urgent call from Sherman Wilkerson, a wealthy friend and client in Malibu. His 27-year-old-granddaughter, Kimberly, last seen in Paris has gone missing. He is concerned because Kim is his only living relative. Locating Kimberly was relatively easy. However, because she is being chased by notorious drug dealers returning her to the States becomes an elusive task dragging Jack and his friend and manager of Private Paris, Louis Langlois, through hour after hour of murder and mayhem in and around the streets and businesses of Paris. As an aside to the prime story, Jack and Louis also become involved with a venturous Islamic terrorist organization that leaves their graffiti calling card, TagAB-16, at murder sites of some of France's greatest artists, writers and designers. For the most part I thought this aspect of the story was confusing, monotonous and dull. One facet did catch my attention, “an Islamic republic in France will become a reality—it is the will of Allah.”
This was not one of Patterson’s best. I give it only 3-stars. Private Paris was a so-so read, not exciting, not dull.

Milton Berle brought a "hellzapoppin'" vaudeville aesthetic to TV. Gleason used it as an autobiographical medium. Red Skelton was the classic clown from the heartland. Paul Henning, who created, wrote, and produced The Beverly Hillbillies, was himself a kid from Missouri who grew up to become a millionaire in Los Angeles. Excellent Second-Hand History Source of TV Producers

This is an excellent second-hand source for media history about several big-name TV producers. I bought it to obtain an overview of Roy Huggins' career in television and this helpful text provided a lot of insight on Huggins as well as other big-name TV producers from the past. If you are into media history from the 1950s to the 1980s, then the chapters on Huggins as well as Glen A. Larson and Michael "Miami Vice" Mann should fascinate and inform you.

About the Author
Julie Moir Messervy is an award-winning author of four books including The Magic Land, Contemplative Gardens, and Outside the Not So Big House. Among her notable works, Messervy collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and the City of Toronto to design a three-acre Music Garden at the Toronto Harbourfront based on a suite by J.S. Bach. Messervy is the 2006 recipient of the Association for Professional Landscape Designer's Award of Distinction. She lives in Saxtons River, Vermont (www.JulieMoirMesservy.com)

Putting Foundations Under your Dream Garden

Messervy has found a way to codify something that seemed vague to me: the "feel" of a landscape, or how a person reacts to a space. She breaks landscape forms down into 7 "archetypes," lists the features of each, then suggests ways to use this new understanding in designing your own yard or garden. I suddenly realized, for example, that the narrow, paved alleys coming off my tiny city backyard weren't necessarily the problem and disappointment I had always considered them, but were features I could play up and turn to advantage. (They had always tempted me to walk to the end -- now I just have to make that journey worthwhile.) I was just bursting with ideas after reading this book, able to look at my tiny space with new eyes. The archetypal business isn't just pleasantly mystical but is also practical, backed up with sophisticated but down-to-earth ideas. It's a different kind of garden design book that gets you to think of the overall "f! eel" (not look) you want first (the step missing from most gardening books), and then figure out how to actually construct it -- a satisfying blend of mythic/artistic with practical and well-organized. (And as a bonus, the photos are drop-dead gorgeous!)

Learn a new way to think about designing your garden

This is garden design from the heart, not the head. Garden design books usually offer us a formula, templates, and lists of plants. "The Inward Garden" instead tries to stimulate a new way of thinking about our landscapes. Messervy tries to create gardens that resonate with fond memories of the places where we felt most secure and most free as children. You might think that you want an elaborate perennial border, but after reading this book realize that you'd really rather gaze at a little bit of prairie, or a woodland or listen to a tinkling stream. If you are going to spend all that time, money and effort, wouldn't it be wonderful to have a garden that makes you feel good, instead of one that merely consumes resources and becomes a millstone? This is not the book that will help you calculate how many bags of mulch you need, or how to build a retaining wall. What it will do is help you identify what you really want from your landscape, instead of what you think you're supposed to want, or what all your neighbors have.

The One Book That Belongs In Any Gardener's Library

Julie Moir Messervy has written what undoubtedly will become a classic of garden writing and design. Deeply literate and beautifully written, The Inward Garden gives the reader a process for designing one's "dream garden". Based on garden archtypes: the sea, the cave, the harbor, the promitory, the island, the mountain, and the sky, this book provides a structure for imagining the garden of one's desires and a practical process for designing this deeply felt garden. The author describes in detail each of these archytical gardens. Each archtype is illustrated with outstanding garden photographs. The Inner Garden gently asks the reader to think and feel deeply about the garden of his or her dreams and to have the couage to begin creating that garden.
