Their next mission may very well turn the Cold War red-hot once again.
Stepping directly into the line of fire, the president of the United States is in New York for a summit at the United Nations with his Russian counterpart. Pulled away from his family and pressed into service, Detective Michael Bennett must trace the source of a threat that could rip the country apart--and ignite a war the likes of which the world has never seen. With allegiances constantly in doubt and no one above suspicion, only Bennett can save the president--and the country--before the assassins' deadly kill shot hits its mark.

objective correlatives
By Julia Walker
Torn between an honest 3-star review and real affection for the Bennett family, I caved to sentiment. Now all of the Bennett novels require a healthy chunk of "willing suspension of disbelief," but what ties the iffy plots to the real world are all the specifics -- the roads, highways, beach communities, summer cabins on lakes, subway lines. Both the plots and the authors' penchant for making Bennett walk on water need that concrete reality (to say nothing of 10 kids from NYC's ACS....)
So what's my problem? Well, it's a book about a plot against the President of the US. It is set in November, starting with a snow storm and running through Thanksgiving. And yet this president has just been "newly inaugurated."
No guys, that's in January. He's newly elected in November. And thus, not yet POTUS.
I tried to dismiss this as a typo, as a failure of copy editing, as something too picky to worry about, but the plot -- such as it is -- depends upon the new-ness of the Prez, and it comes up again and again. The more I was made aware of the timeline error, the more I drifted away from those reality checks I so needed. As for the other elements of the book, there's still virtually no character development and very little time spent on the kids, even though a semi-plotline depends on one. The kids -- however unlikely -- are the best thing about the books, when the authors give them enough ink to notice. My favorite books are "Tick Tock" and "I, Michael Bennett," because they offer the most time with the family. (And "Tick Tock" even gestures toward a theme! Snort.)
OK, so I'm an English major. It doesn't have an off switch. But hey, it's an election year! November is November and January is the next year. . . .
When your primary objective correlative, the words that generate for the reader a sense of reality, of recognition, is the use of factual data, you gotta be more careful with those pesky facts.

Ok, but not the best
By Barbara
I love Patterson's books. I love reading the Michael Bennett series. But, this one lagged and got tiresome. I always have difficulty putting down a book in this series but this one I could without much hesitation. I was never in the hurry up mode to discover what happens next. I won't reveal anything because I don't want to influence a potential reader. You'll just need to form your own opinion. You may not be as critical.

Totally Disappointed
By Kathie D. O'Connell
I usually can count on James Patterson for easy reading and quick reading since they make you want to keep reading. This book was horribly boring, too detailed about guns and glory and i couldn't even finish it. I guess i enjoy reading about the bennett family twists and turns more than the details of the perps.
