Amazon.com Review
In the J.D. Salinger benchmark "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," Seymour Glass floats his beach mate Sybil on a raft and tells her about these creatures' tragic flaw. Though they seem normal, if one swims into a hole filled with bananas, it will overeat until it's too fat to escape. Meanwhile, Seymour's wife, Muriel, is back at their Florida hotel, assuring her mother not to worry--Seymour hasn't lost control. Mention of a book he sent her from Germany and several references to his psychiatrist lead the reader to believe that World War II has undone him.

The war hangs over these wry stories of loss and occasionally unsuppressed rage. Salinger's children are fragile, odd, hypersmart, whereas his grownups (even the materially content) seem beaten down by circumstances--some neurasthenic, others (often female) deeply unsympathetic. The greatest piece in this disturbing book may be "The Laughing Man," which starts out as a man's recollection of the pleasures of storytelling and ends with the intersection between adult need and childish innocence. The narrator remembers how, at nine, he and his fellow Comanches would be picked up each afternoon by the Chief--a Staten Island law student paid to keep them busy. At the end of each day, the Chief winds them down with the saga of a hideously deformed, gentle, world-class criminal. With his stalwart companions, which include "a glib timber wolf" and "a lovable dwarf," the Laughing Man regularly crosses the Paris-China border in order to avoid capture by "the internationally famous detective" Marcel Dufarge and his daughter, "an exquisite girl, though something of a transvestite." The masked hero's luck comes to an end on the same day that things go awry between the Chief and his girlfriend, hardly a coincidence. "A few minutes later, when I stepped out of the Chief's bus, the first thing I chanced to see was a piece of red tissue paper flapping in the wind against the base of a lamppost. It looked like someone's poppy-petal mask. I arrived home with my teeth chattering uncontrollably and was told to go straight to bed."

Classic Salinger
By A Customer
J.D. Salinger has rightfully been one of the most highly praised authors of the 20th century. Although best known for his coming-of-age novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger also wrote brilliant short stories of great complexity. This is quite an accomplishment when one considers the fact that the short story poses problems the novel easily overcomes.
Salinger's skillful use of language is what distinguishes him most from his contemporaries. There is never a dull moment in a Salinger short story as this expert author intertwines detail and dialogue to convey emotion to the reader.
Although the short story leaves little room for character development, Salinger's superb style and careful use of language allow us to get to know his characters intimately in a very short period of time.
The stories included in Salinger's dazzling collection, Nine Stories, were published between 1948 and 1953 in The New Yorker.
They exhibit a unified tone and theme, something not usually found in short story collections. They are classic Salinger and classic stories; each one contributes to the volume as a whole and each is therefore enriched in its relation to the others.
Although people disagree on which story is best, each contains elements of the relationship between children and adults, one of Salinger's signature themes.
Two of the stories, A Perfect Day for Bananafish and For Esmé--With Love and Squalor, both feature protagonists (Seymour and Sargent X) who, as veterans of WWII, have sacrificed their psychological well-being and are no longer the men they once thought they were. Both feel alienated from life and, more importantly, from those they love. Both protagonists are searching for new forms of comfort and security in the respective characters of Sybil and Esmé.
Here, however, the similarities end. For Sybil lacks Esmé's insight and the final outcome for Seymour is very different than that of Sargent X and perhaps different than what it could have been.
In A Perfect Day for Bananafish, Seymour's wife, Muriel, goes to great lengths to reassure her mother regarding Seymour's soundness of mind, although Salinger carefully lets us, the reader, glimpse Seymour's paranoia.
Searching for the non-judgmental understanding of a child (but the love of an adult), Seymour befriends young Sybil, a child he's met on the beach. After realizing the impossibility of his desires and his own isolation, Seymour is driven to one last, desperate act, an act that makes some question his sanity while others will see him as finally regaining the control he had lost.
In For Esmé--With Love and Squalor, Sargent X also has a relationship with a child, but it is one that is quite different from that of Seymour and Sybil.
An intelligent and vivacious girl, Esmé lost her own father in North Africa and is quite aware of the horrors of war. When she approaches Sargent X in an English tearoom, she senses his isolation and resultant alienation and offers to write him, something Sargent X immediately agrees to.
Thirty minutes after their meeting, Esmé takes her leave of Sargent X with the words, "I hope you return with all your faculties intact."
Had it not been for Esmé, however, and the letter she writes, Sargent X would not have returned with all his faculties intact. Esmé's letter provides the one certain connection to reality and the constancy of day-to-day life that Sargent X needs. It both comforts him and reassures him that there is still some happiness out there to be found. At a time when the war has left him with nothing else to relate to, Esmé provides the needed link.
In this extraordinary collection of stories we find different people in different situations, yet a common thread of life runs through all, linking the stories to one another and to readers everywhere. This is only a small part of the genius that typifies J.D. Salinger. Read this book and I guarantee, like millions of readers before, you'll come back for more!

Looks deeply at our society
By P. Nicholas Keppler
In Nine Stories, J.D. Salinger seems bent on exposing the poignant complexities of the people around us. The characters of these timeless narratives are typical American men and women, nestled away in suburbs; unwinding on summer retreats and buried in apartment complexes; folks who, on the surface, seem fortunate and content. Mr. Salinger peels past their public appearances, throwing them conundrums bound to expose their hidden insecurities, shortcomings and naivety. A visit from a college roommate causes an upheaval of reflection and regret in a suburban housewife in "Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut;" romantic turmoil unearths a mean streak in the chief of a boy scout-type organization in "the Laughing Man" and Seymour Glass, the burnt-out intellectual whose presence would loom over Salinger's latter work, falls over the edge in the intense, unpredictable, unforgettable classic, "A Perfect Day for Bananafish." Fifty years after they were conceived these characters could still be your neighbors or schoolmates. The vivid portraits of Nine Stories are practical assessments for the modern American dream.

From Booklist
This is a beautiful, vibrant coffee-table book; it may also be one of the more socially important books to appear in some time. Americanos forces us (gently) to reevaluate, reconsider, and reestablish the very important fact that Latinos have been an integral part of the history of the U.S. "The face of America should include us," Edward James Olmos asserts in his preface, and it takes but a few moments glancing at these well-rendered photographs to recognize that "face" in all its diversity. Some images will be familiar from the entertainment world; others will strike one more directly: faces we see each day, down the street, down the hall, or right next to us. In his rhythmical and joyful introduction, Carlos Fuentes admonishes us, "All together now, keep your eyes open beyond yourselves, see the margins of the world, where those who are different from us are waiting to demonstrate that they are as human as we." If that bridge into the twenty-first century that politicians enjoy talking about is going to be successfully and intelligently crossed, it would bode well to recognize how important it is for all of us to join in the journey. This is a timely and handsome book, and as contributor David Carrasco says of Latinos, "We are both an accomplished and an unfinished people," and the same could be said of this country and all its promise. Beautiful Tapestry of Latino Life in the United States
By Luis Hernandez
As the largest growing ethnic group in the United States, Latinos/Hispanics have made inroads in many fields due to their strength, organization, and family values. Although differences among Latinos are as common as differences in other groups distinguished by a common language root (e.g., Slavs, Arabs, Romance languages speakers, etc.) the common struggle of all nationalities that are found in this classification is the same: success.
Edited by one of the greatest activists and advocates for Latinos all around the world, actor Edward James Olmos, "Americanos: Latino Life in the United States" is a collection of beautiful photographs and stories of Latinos throughout the United States. From Mexican-Americans in California to Puerto Ricans in New York City, Olmos and a team of other editors have produced a book that perfectly and respectfully captures the beauty and realities of Latinos all around. Available in hardbound and paperback editions, "Americanos: Latino Life in the United States" is a must have for Latino/Hispanic Studies students/enthuasists or for anyone who tuly appreciates cultural photography. The book, which was accompanied by a U.S. museum tour of photographs featured in the book, is truly a milestone for a community that has risen from a long sleep and awakened to become the most dynamic and promising group in the Americas.
If I can use two words to describe this book, I would use "moving" and "beautiful." It's a must have book in your library, especially if you're Latino.

Working on "Americanos" was a true labor of love.
By Jimmy Dorantes, Photographer, info@latinfocus.com
Having worked with Olmos, Ybarra, and Monterrey and the 29 other photographers like myself was a true labor of love. I am one of the photographers of the Americanos Project. I feel we uncovered a treasure of diversity with in the Latino culture living in the United States. Now this labor of love is available for all to see, study and enjoy. This book is as colorful as the culture itself.

A not to be missed work!
By Wanda McDonald
I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Olmos talk in person about the making of "Americanos" and now have the pleasure of enjoying the book again and again. The photos are hauntingly charming, poignant and vital and I can guarantee they will stay in your heart and mind long after you put the book down.
What "Americanos" has to say about Latinos is so vitally important. Olmos, in his preface, says "...Too often, only one culture of Latino culture is apparent. That is the culture that we see from our car windows, on newscasts, in restaurants and from stadium seats..." "Americanos", however gives us an insider's view, a look into the very heart and soul of our Latino brothers and sisters and reveals a people, in Olmos's words, "...who are diverse in culture, color, ideas and dreams..."

From Library Journal
The focus of this intriguing story is Robert Hanssen, an unassuming man here labeled "the most damaging FBI agent in U.S. history." Pretending to be a religious family man who hated communism, Hanssen used his top-secret clearance to gain information on the activities of FBI agents and double agents in Moscow secrets he leaked to the Soviets over the years for a total of $470,000. His betrayal is linked to the execution of at least three U.S. spies. Only a plea bargain saved him from a death sentence. Drawing on information gathered from more than 150 interviews with Hanssen's friends, neighbors, colleagues, lawyers, professors, classmates, roommates, psychiatrists, and priests, Time reporters Shannon and Blackman provide an in-depth analysis of a hypocritical man consumed with possessing power over others. Vise's The Bureau and the Mole provides greater context for Hanssen's eventual downfall. Recommended for criminal justice collections and large public libraries. Tim Delaney, Canisius Coll., Buffalo

From Booklist
The story of FBI special agent Bob Hanssen was told in David Vise's The Bureau and the Mole [BKL D 15 01], and now the story of this spy extraordinaire is retold, this time by two Time magazine reporters. In February 2001, Hanssen was arrested as a double agent for Russian intelligence after what turned out to be the biggest sellout of U.S. national security secrets in the long history of the FBI. The version of the story presented here is based on extensive interviews, many with people who have not spoken about Hanssen before, and the emphasis is on how the FBI tracked a mole, found out who he was, and laid a trap for him. Interesting, too, is the authors' account of FBI culture under J. Edgar Hoover and the differences and similarities in post-Hoover days. Calling Hanssen the "quintessential suburban dad," the authors relate how this seemingly innocuous and, frankly, rather boring man transformed himself into "one of the most damaging spies ever to work against the United States." Having access to intelligence and counterintelligence and making the decision to sell what he knew time and time again was, apparently, a way for this chronic "outsider" to exert power. The two books taken together cover every detail and nuance of the case. Buy wherever the first one proved popular. Brad Hooper

The best by far!
By A Customer
I just finished the two Hanssen books, this one and The Bureau and the Mole, and there is no comparison. I heard a lot from Vise on the radio, but his book is essentially a quickie padded with psychobabble guessing about Hanssen's thoughts and motives. Vise has a few sexy stories and fills around them with chapters of inexplicable praise for Louis Freeh, who must have helped Vise a lot to get such favorable treatment himself when he was being drummed out of the FBI. The Spy Next Door, on the other hand, is carefully researched and beautifully written. The authors work hard trying to explain why anyone with Hanssen's all-American background would commit such heinous crimes, but in the end, they refuse to speculate, laying out what they learned (a lot) and stopping before they go too far. It's a sad tale, but an important one. An easy read, too. Highly recommended.

The Latest Spy . . . . But Probably Not the Last
By William Holmes
Shannon and Blackman have written an interesting book about the career of Robert Philip Hanssen, the FBI "mole" who was arrested in February 2001 for spying for the KGB and its successors.
The authors' prose is clear and crisp, and in the end they settle for a "just the facts, ma'am" approach to the story. The book discusses Hanssen's childhood, education, career with the FBI, religious convictions, sexual fantasies, as well as the secrets he betrayed. Hanssen emerges as a study in contradictions: a vocal anti-Communist who spies for the Soviet Union; a devout Catholic who sells vital secrets to an atheist government; an apparent prude who patronizes a stripper and posts odd fantasies about his sex life on the Internet.
Hanssen betrayed everything that he claimed was important to him--his wife, his family, his friends, his religion, and his country. But the motive for his horrendous crimes, which he committed over the course of more than twenty years, is anything but clear. I would have loved it if this book had had more to say about the psychology of a spy, but it didn't. How can someone like Hanssen wake up and go to work every morning, knowing what he's risking and what he's done? Why doesn't the contradiction between his public image and his life cause him to break down? Is he able to compartmentalize things, so that the "good" Hanssen can live his life while the "bad" Hanssen" lives a lie? Is he just a sociopath, who doesn't really care about anyone or anything but himself? Maybe the FBI's own behavioral science unit will weigh in on this subject one day, but Shannon and Blackman don't venture down this dangerous trail. For better or worse, they describe "what" Hanssen is without really explaining "why" he is.
Another gap in the book is that, apart from a few generalizations, it doesn't address why the FBI and CIA seem so incompetent when it comes to catching spies (not that the KGB comes off looking a whole lot better). Perhaps the problem is that resources aren't allocated well, or that FBI and CIA personnel aren't trained to recognize the behavioral patterns of a spy--whatever the reason, the book largely leaves that problem to the reader's imagination.
The thing that should really strike you about this book is the realization that, for the last 25 years, there has always been at least one--usually several--moles who are busily selling vital American secrets. And those are just the ones that we know about. There is no obvious reason to think that there aren't just as many spies today as there have been in the last two decades. A book like this cries out for an explanation: what, if anything, are the FBI and the CIA doing to make sure that a disaster like Hanssen doesn't happen again?

Another Rush Job and It Shows!
By A Customer
I've been fascinated by the Hanssen spy case since it came to light early last year. Yet it amazes me that three books about Hanssen have already surfaced: this one, Vise's "The Bureau and the Mole," and Havill's "The Spy Who Stayed Out in the Cold." To be blunt, all three are "quicky paperback books" dressed up as serious hardbacks. Anybody who wants to know the whole truth or anything near it is going to have to wait for years for it to come out.
This fact is painfully evident in Shannon and Blackman's book. There are several flaws to it that are evident with just a quick scan (I'm still reading it):
1. Omission: In Vise's equally poor quality book, he states a very important fact, that Hanssen's brother-in-law, a fellow FBI agent, reported him in 1990 as a person living well beyond his means. That is a red-flag indicator that someone in a sensitive job like an FBI counterintelligence specialist (as Hanssen was) may have gone wrong. Incredibly, according to Vise, the FBI did nothing with this tip. Yet a search of the text and index of Shannon and Blackman's book makes no mention of this incident or even the name of the FBI agent who reported him (maybe I missed it, or the authors discounted it, but it should have been mentioned!).
2. Sourcing: Just like Vise, the authors don't deign to detail the "extensive research" that they conducted in the few short months since Hanssen's arrest. Instead, they expect us to take it for granted that their research was great without giving us the bibliography and endnotes that let us test that assumption. I'll give an example. On page 80, Shannon and Blackman state the following about Hanssen's personality:
"He didn't know what [his fellow FBI agents] spoke about when out at the bars and strip clubs, but maybe it was about him --maybe that was all they ever talked about. Hanssen had spent his life pressing his face up against the glass . . . more than anything he wanted power --real power, which to [Hanssen] meant the power to humiliate others."
Now, how do Shannon and Blackman know this? They didn't interview Hanssen (he hasn't even been sentenced yet!!). Are they mind-readers? Somehow, I suspect that this passage is the opinion of a psychiatrist (one of those that they interviewed). What's the harm in saying that in a footnote??
This is surprising to me because Shannon is capable of superb research (I don't know anything about Blackman). I have read her book about the 1985 murder of a DEA agent in Mexico. She took well over two years to write it and included 15 pages of endnotes. Yet the diligence shown in that book is absent in "The Spy Next Door."
3. Style of Research: In their very brief description of sources, the authors state that they made "dozens of written requests" for help from Hanssen's wife, his family, and Mrs. Hanssen's attorney. I'm sorry, but I think that "dozens of written requests" constitute pestering people and is not worthy of journalists of Shannon and Blackman's apparent caliber. After the first few rejections, this duo should have taken the hint and moved on.
I close this review out with the fervent hope that Peter Earley is working on a book about this case. He did the definitive one on Aldrich Ames (arrested in 1994 but the book only came out in 1997). Earley got Ames' cooperation, those of his colleagues, and incredibly some of his Russian handlers. Furthermore, he gives a precise account of his sources by chapter and a bibliography (both of which are sadly lacking in "The Spy Next Door").
To sum up, I'm sorry I bought this book but glad that I at least got it at a steep discount. I wouldn't recommend that anyone shell out the bucks to buy a brand new hardback copy. They should wait a year or two and get the paperback on the remainder shelves.

A note for American buyers - this book is the same as God's Middle Finger - it is the UK version. Having said that this is a great book.

Very readable
By Peter King
Richard Grant is a remarkable writer and he holds my attention throughout this account. The only other book of his that I have read is the outstanding "Ghost Riders"("American Nomads"), so perhaps it is only to be expected that, for me, this suffers in comparison. Ghost Riders (as I remember it) is suffused with a sense of awe at the wide open spaces and the humans that wander in them. This book does touch into the same motherlode transcendence in its portrayal of the immensity and wonder of the Sierra Madre, but in my reading this gets submerged under the continual alcohol, violence, macho posturing and drug trafficking of almost everyone the author encounters.

True there is also great warmth and humanity, and there is much that is interesting for me. I particularly appreciated his accounts of the Apache, Tarahumaras and Guarijos. I have never been to Mexico but, for me, Richard credibly conveys the magical realism that he always found just beneath the surface wherever he went. The only other writer that I have read who journeyed as interestingly in this part of the world was Frank Waters, but then I have yet to follow up some of Richard's listed references. (A "Thank you" here for the list of references, and for those in "Ghost Riders" also).

I was puzzled by Richard's need to continue to take risks. For much of the last third of the book I found myself saying "What are you doing there?" "Why are you staying there?" "Why not hang out with some other people?" So many of these encounters seem fraught with danger and essentially unrewarding unless you're in the local business that I'm reminded of seeing how far you can bend a ruler before it snaps.

All in all, well worth reading. At the same time I am sure there must be other Mexicos and other Sierra Madres co-existing in this same universe.

mexican badlands
By G.I.Forbes
In America this book is entitled "Gods Middle Finger" (isbn 978146534402) but the title was changed in the UK for obvious reasons.
This is the story of a young man with an obsession to travel the 900 mile length of the Sierra Madre rang in northern Mexico despite the warnings of the evident dangers in this lawless part of Mexico.
He recounts his dealings with drug dealers, drunks, murderers, the mafia, wild Indians and decent people in a most fascinating manner .
That he succeds in his jouirney is more by good luck than anything else.
A ver good account of a little known part of the world.

Amazon.com Review
Following his blood-curdling adventures in A Living Nightmare and The Vampire's Assistant, half-vampire Darren Shan is settling into his day-to-day life at Cirque Du Freak, the traveling freak show he has joined. But before he can get too cozy, his vampire master, Mr. Crepsley, whisks him off to the big city for a mysterious mission. Soon, Crepsley, Darren, and Evra the snake-boy are embroiled in a bloody battle of wits between the vampire community and a mad, "vampaneze," a creature from a separate, more murderous race of vampires. Along the way, Darren meets his first girlfriend, and winds up putting her life, as well as everyone else's, in grave danger.

The latest installment of Darren Shan's bestselling saga will surely satiate his legions of bloodthirsty fans. As fast-paced and thrilling as ever, his writing will encourage even reluctant readers to devour the series. Luckily for all, it looks as though we haven't seen the last of this appealing, well-meaning (if occasionally bumbling) half-vampire. (Ages 10 and older) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
A visit to the city leads Darren and Evra, the snake boy, to a startling discovery (blood drained corpses) and sends them on a mission to discover the foul creature responsible, in Darren Shan's Tunnels of Blood, the third installment in the Saga of Darren Shan, that began with Cirque Du Freak.
Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-8-Shan will continue to draw "Goosebumps" (Scholastic) graduates with this third installment in the series. Here, he sends his eponymous teenaged protagonist, who is still not quite a full-blooded (so to speak) vampire, along with scaly snake-boy Evra and century-old Larten Crepsley on a mysterious mission. They are to kill, as it eventually turns out, a rogue "vampaneze," a member of a minority group that believes in killing its victims, draining their blood rather than just taking sips. In the process, young "Darren" meets vivacious human (probably, but stay tuned) Debbie Hemlock, and learns a little more about Mr. Crepsley's checkered background. The game's a little slow to develop, but after a gory meat-locker scene, much running about in sewer tunnels, and lines like "When I came to, I found myself face to face with a skull. Not any old skull, either-this still had flesh on it, and one of the eyeballs was floating in its socket," the vampaneze meets a suitably horrible end, described in stomach-churning detail. The story is compulsively readable, but it's not for the squeamish.

Mystery, suspense, horror, oh my!
By ckw
The third installation of Darren Shan's Cirque du Freak series takes us to an unnamed city plagued by an elusive killer. Darren and his mentor, Larten Crepsley, are paid a visit from an old friend of Mr. Crepsley's named Gavner Purl, a Vampire General. After a clandestine conversation with Gavner, Mr. Crepsley announces that he must leave the Cirque for a while and go live in the city, and Darren as his assistant has to go with him. Dismayed at the idea of having to be alone all the time in a strange place, Darren convinces his best friend Evra Von to join him.
While Mr. Crepsley is away or sleeping, Darren and Evra spend time enjoying themselves in the city, going to zoos and other interesting places. Darren even meets a girl, Debbie Hemlock, who adores the fact that he's just a little strange and that his best friend is a snake-boy. Coming home from Debbie's one night just before Christmas, Darren finds Evra transfixed by a TV news show that is reporting the finding of six dead humans, all drained of their blood. Evra and Darren argue as to who the culprit is, and Darren immediately suspects Mr. Crepsley, who is never home at night. He tracks Mr. Crepsley to a slaughterhouse, prepared to kill his master, but finds out that he's fighting an enemy he never could have dreamed about. It will take every wit Darren and Mr. Crepsley have to conquer the mad murderer, as well as a lot of luck.
Darren Shan has created yet another spellbinding volume in the story of a young boy's training as a vampire's assistant. This book gets four stars instead of five because the trademark suspense and thrills usually present throughout the books is left until the end. It seems that this books serves as more of a vehicle to show Darren's growth and knowledge of humanity, rather than scare the readers. Don't worry, though, there's plenty of gross stuff for everyone, and Shan sets up what promises to be a fascinating fourth novel, as Darren faces a new enemy and learns more about the vampire world.

Another Brilliant Bloodcurdler!
By A Customer
Darren Shan is at it again with his recent installment of the DARREN SHAN SAGA. With "Tunnels of Blood," we find Darren adjusting to his peculiar vampire life. Drinking blood, performing spiders...it's all new to the rookie half-vampire. When the ever-mysterious Mr. Crepsley brings Darren and his friend, Evra, to a city, things start getting odd. Bloody murders, the nighttime disappearance of Mr. Crepsley; things begin to get messy. With the addition of a girl, Debbie, into the meddle, Darren's safety and even life may be in peril.
Darren Shan applies a suspenseful plot to his excellent writing: the combination of quality story-telling and edge-of-your-seat action at hand, the reader of this great tale won't want it to end.

Vampires....Good or Evil?
By Crystal Huang
Good or Evil? Darren Shan, the author of the Saga of Darren Shan, has never drawn the boundary line clearly. He believes it depends on which position you are and which aspect you are looking from. For example, in a war, or in the society, our enemies are always the one who has different beliefs from ours. In other words, people fight for their faith. This kind of things happens all the time in the Saga of Darren Shan. For instance, Tunnels of Blood ¡Vthe third book of the Saga, an introduction to the history and the world of vampires and their brothers who have different faith from them, the vampanezes.

Basically, Tunnel of Blood is talking about a half-vampire¡¦s, Darren Shan (the author gave the main character his own name), his best friend¡¦s, Evera the snake-boy, and his mentor¡¦s, Mr. Crepsley the vampire, visit to a small town. Because it was under threat by a vampaneze ¡Va kind of vampire, but they kill human beings for blood¡Xand the town was Mr. Crepsley¡¦s home, he brought his assistant, Darren Shan, to help him, yet without telling him what he thought. He went out furtively everyday and cases of murder were on the television everyday. Most importantly, all the victims had their blood all sucked out. No one knew who did it, but Darren Shan thought he knows. He believed it was Mr. Crepsley, so he decided to stop him from killing the next person and kill the evil vampire. Nevertheless, things went totally wrong! Someone unknown to Darren Shan, a vampaneze the real killer, suddenly popped out and kidnapped Evera. Darren Shan almost killed his mentor, just because Mr. Crepsley never told him what he thinks. The relationship between them two is very weird because they did not trust each other, even though they are mentors and assistant. Finally, in this book Mr. Crespley realized that he has to trust his assistant before he wants his assistant to trust himself. They finally work together as a real mentor and assistant.
Incredible twists and plans were taking place in this book. Unlike previous vampire stories, Dracula for instance, Darren Shan¡¦s vampires are not evils, they don¡¦t kill human and they don¡¦t view human beings as animals. However, sometimes they love human.
Anyway, I enjoy it a lot. Honestly, I could not put the book down as I start reading it. I believe anyone who enjoys or can read Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings will definitely love this book!

Amazon.com Review
Beautifully designed and illustrated with hundreds of photographs, this companion volume to the CNN documentary series begins with the roots of the cold war: the military intervention by six nations (including the United States) in the Bolshevik's 1917 Russian Revolution. The book then takes on the cold war proper, from the post-WWII rise of the Iron Curtain to the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet government in the early '90s. "For forty-five years," the authors write, "the peoples of the world held their breath," through missile crises, policies of "mutual assured destruction," the Vietnam War, and the uneasy steps toward détente and full peace highlighted by Richard Nixon's meetings with Brezhnev and by Mikhail Gorbachev's meetings with Ronald Reagan and George Bush. Special sections highlight the role of spies in the cold war, as well as the films and literature of the era. This is a copiously detailed account of the major historical force of the latter half of the 20th century that would make an excellent reference book for any household.

From Booklist
Libraries that see heavy demand for tie-in volumes when PBS and BBC historical documentaries hit the air should expect interest in this lavishly illustrated history of the cold war, which accompanies a 24-episode series that CNN will broadcast this fall. The British producers are credited as the book's authors; they acknowledge the aid of "an international panel of distinguished historians." The text incorporates some recent scholarship based on newly available Soviet and U.S. documents; it opens with a description of the U.S.S.R.'s history from 1917 to 1945, then traces the sources and consequences of East-West confrontation from the late 1940s through the fall of the Berlin Wall. The hundreds of photos and other illustrations will bring back vivid memories for those who lived through those decades, but the volume may be most valuable for readers too young to remember armed struggles in Berlin, Korea, Cuba, and Vietnam or catchphrases like Iron Curtain, de tente, and mutually assured destruction. 46 years in the making, I guess
By Christopher A. Horan
Everyone and their brother has released a book on World War II. Or any other period in history, for that matter. The Vietnam and Korean wars, its all been told a thousand times. But few books that I've ever found in general circulation cover the broad topic of the entire Cold War. Issacs and crew cover the period with as much detail as possible in such a complicated and even sometimes confusing period of time. They do a superb job, with each chapter covering a specific feature of the Cold War, such as the Cuban Missle crisis and more interesting, though less known of events. Issacs provides a very objective viewpoint, and makes reading Cold War: An Illustrated History not so much as a chore as some history books can be.
The pictures provided are really good, and provide many pictures of the key players in the game of chess that was played on Earth throughout the decades.
I rather enjoyed the various side bars presented throughout the book, each one touching upon various aspects of the Cold War, such as spies, or even entertainment.
If you have any interest in the Cold War, or are just plain curious as to what made the world what it is now, this is your best place to start. Buy it.

reader from the desert
By A Customer
In contrast to the views of the reviewer below this is a VERY objective book. The U.S./CIA Cold War activities resulted in the support and establishment of murderous dictatorships in Latin America which were every bit as cruel/oppressive as those of our Communist enemies. There was also the unjust war we waged in Vietnam which killed over a million people. Finally there was the CIA/American backed coup which resulted in the murder of the ELECTED president of Chile, Allende, and the establishement of the dictator Pinochet who is now being prosecuted for mass murder. This book addresses these and other issues instead of using the recent right wing Reagonite rhetoric which equates the U.S. as a benevolent force of freedom as opposed to those evil Communists. The book, while covering many topics and areas related to the cold war, is clearly written and informative. The fantastic illustrations only add to this books appeal. It is time American citizens realize the Cold War was NOT a battle between freedom and tyranny but an amoral conflict between diametrically opposed economic systems struggling to control world markets and resources.

An excellant general read on a complex period in history...
By Thomas Moody
If you're looking for general history on the 40 to 50 year period known as the "Cold War", than this book along with the CNN program "Cold War" is for you...contrary to a few of the other reviewers, I liked this book in it's general state and I would not want to extoll my opinions concerning morality here. I'm sure that there are other books that would welcome that type of review, but this book is just for the general history reader and presented in a fabulous format! Maps, color photograhs and charts along with clear and interesting prose make this an excellant "launching pad" to the struggle and to other more detailed views. Highly recommended.

People Love a Circus
By Cabin Dweller
Written when Coughlin was still alive, this history by author Sheldon Marcus benefits from interviews with the old, mellow, and mostly anonymous retired priest. What I find least interesting about Coughlin and this book is his relationship inside the Catholic church, but it’s worth pointing out his relatively low position among the Catholic hierarchy did matter to the extent that he was censored not just by the FBI or the FCC, but by a pope in the Vatican. This un-American element in the controversy is especially strange considering Mussolini and the church’s infamous silence about Nazi methods.
Charles Coughlin has his relationships in the book, a brief and rocky one with Smith, whom he disavowed against evidence to the contrary from 1936, and Dr. Ralph Townsend, not to be confused with Francis, and the Union Party loser William Lemke, whose poor showing of less than one million votes after the priest guaranteed nine million, soured Coughlin on serious political efforts other than contrarianism. The Roosevelt relationship naturally is the most interesting one to follow, and it is more than political but childish and like a soap opera. When FDR needed Coughlin’s support, he got it, and as so many times when the president didn’t need a drag on his latest legislation he got silent. More than other cases, it seems Coughlin didn’t disagree as much as felt offended. The page 205 question: “Is it too ‘pro-Nazi’ to demand American school children be adequately fed before we give billions of dollars worth of food and war materials to Great Britain and the Communist USSR?”
There were 45 million votes cast in the 1936 election. Coughlin’s audience was estimated at the time at near 45 million. 1938 is the first year that Coughlin was to be accused of anti-Semitism. His church, he admitted, profited $12,000 on silver speculation after his public lobbying for the silver standard. His view against Communism is amazingly an endorsement of government intervention, all simultaneously a ridiculous attack on “international bankers” and “money changers in the temple”. I did not find any more theology in Coughlin’s persona on the radio or in Social Justice, or in the Christian Front, than money changing in the temples, the foreign financial interests he said were keeping the depression going on purpose. I would not read this book and be struck by hate speech, theology, or anti-intervention. The lasting impression is simply a man who used uncertainty to ask for government influence. He was not an evangelist; he was a campaigner.

An Enigma
By Mike DePue, OFS
In American Catholic: The Saints and Sinners Who Built America's Most Powerful Church, there is this apt assessment: "Charles Coughlin is usually remembered only for the anti-Semitic fascism of the last years of his radio career, but the preachings that made him famous, up to roughly 1935, were much more in the American, and Catholic, mainstream." (p. 146) Coughlin was a decidely public figure from '28 to '42.

The outstanding historian Glen Jeansonne, in Women of the Far Right: The Mothers' Movement and World War II, wisely notes that "one's intellectual diet is enhanced by variety" and goes on to sum up: "Balanced history requires studies of villains, heroes, and those who combine heroic attributes with tragic flaws. Further, individuals who are heroes to some are villains to others." (p. xi) Coughlin, who passed away in 1979 at age 88, cantankerous and opinionated--and unrepentant--to the end, still inspires a wide range of reaction. After reading the even-handed coverage by Marcus, I'm left to ponder Coughlin's still-unexplainable tragic flaws.

Here are a few Sheldon Marcus observations to help you form, confirm, or even question your own conclusions:

"He [Coughlin] had few firm convictions beyond his admiration for strong, dictatorial rule, his hatred of communism and a rather traditional feeling of anti-Semitism which in the early part of the twentieth century was more condoned that criticized by the Church." (p. 229) (Marcus doesn't seem to make much of it, but I wonder to what degree Coughlin was strongly influenced by the writing of the Irish priest, theologian, and political theorist Denis Fahey; see The Coughlin-Fahey Connection: Father Charles E. Coughlin, Father Denis Fahey, C.S.Sp., and Religious Anti-Semitism in the United States, 1938-1954 ... Studies. Series VII. Theology and Religion).)

"Father Coughlin's success provides evidence that the power a man is thought to wield may be more potent than the power he actually does wield." (p. 231)

"While some men dreamed of becoming millionaires, or of making love to beautiful women, Coughlin made his dreams a reality by addressing large crowds." (p. 94)

"Both [Coughlin and Huey Long] were men of immense egotistical dimension. Both were vain and accustomed to giving orders rather than carrying them out." (p. 85)

Marcus notes: "This study was greatly facilitated by the fact that I was able to secure the cooperation of Father Coughlin, who for the first time since 1933 agreed to assist a biographer." (Acknowledgments)

Father Coughlin and the Catholic Church
By Bert L. Metzger, Jr.
This book about the activities of Father Coughlin in the 1920's and 1930's should be read by every American, especially every Roman Catholic American, to learn from his anti-semitism, his support of Adolph Hitler, his use of his position in this church, and his use Church funds, to do this by his widespread radio programs to millions of Americans, and the little the Church leaders did to stop him so that all Americans know the truth of his history and the Church's history.
