One of the country's first highly visible black reporters, syndicated columnist Rowan pulls no punches in this powerful, feisty, often moving autobiography. From a poverty-stricken Depression childhood in Tennessee, he rose to become an influential journalist, and this memoir interweaves vivid eyewitness accounts of Martin Luther King, the Montgomery, Ala., bus boycott, Little Rock protests and other signposts of the civil rights movement. Rowan, who became a State Department spokesman in the Kennedy administration, offers a skeptical insider's view of JFK's "imperial presidency" as well as a withering portrait of Lyndon Johnson, in whose administration he also served. He blasts Reagan's policies ("cruelty covered up by glib cliches") and lashes the Bush presidency for its lack of commitment to education, housing and eradication of poverty. He calls for black-Jewish unity, strongly opposes legalization of drugs, and critiques Jesse Jackson and Washington, D.C., Mayor Marion Barry. In this autobiographical work, the eminent black journalist who was also a public official in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations provides a revealing account of his private and public life. He rose from a poverty-stricken childhood in Tennessee to become Director of the United States Information Agency under Lyndon Johnson, with stops along the way as an award-winning journalist, Assistant Secretary of State, and American Ambassador to Finland. Of special interest to students of recent American history are his telling examples of Johnson's contradictory personality and Rowan's own credo as an independent syndicated columnist. Although sometimes predictable and pedestrian, this generally well-written work is recommended for major public and academic libraries.

Not So Recent Experiences

If you've forgotten some of the background of the struggle for civil rights in the US Mr. Rowan's memoir will jar you. He's a pretty mild narrator but I found him provocative.

An essential read.

For anyone that cares about the journey of African-Americans in the 20th century, this book is a must. Carl Rowan has written a thought-provoking, entertaining memoir that glows with the authority of a brilliant man. From his early days in segregated McMinville, Tenn., through his World War II Navy service, undergraduate years at Oberlin College, the incredible work he did as a courageous and gifted newspaper journalist exposing Southern bigotry in the 1950s, and much more, "Breaking Barriers" is the story of a life that has mattered.
For those who may see Rowan as some sort of racist demagogue, this book should reveal something else. This is a man who was one of the most outspoken critics of Martin Luther King, even as he acknowledged the man's great achievements. He is also critical of Jesse Jackson and other prominent figures in the black community. He is also unafraid to explore both the good and bad sides of Lyndon Johnson.
But quite rightly, his most potent venom is reserved for Ronald Reagan, who, as Rowan explains, single-handedly did more harm to African-Americans than any president since Woodrow Wilson.
A highly recommended work.
