Orgasmic!
By A Customer
Masters and Johnson's great contribution to the study of sex. This masterpiece shamelessly delves into the details of the human sexual response. It is an honest and straightforward approach to the physiology of sex. If you ever really, really wanted to know exactly what was going on during sexual excitement, this is the book for you.
Aside from the book's large contribution to the the study of sex, the book is a priceless artifact for those who are intrigued with the history of sexuality. The book, though trying to be objective, showcases some beliefs about sex during the sixties.
All in all a treasure.

THE PIONEERING SEX RESEARCHERS' FIRST BOOK
By Steven H Propp
The Masters and Johnson research team head by William H. Masters (1915-2001) and Virginia E. Johnson (born 1925) pioneered research into human sexuality from 1957 until the 1990s. The follow-up to this volume is Human Sexual Inadequacy.

They wrote in the Preface to this 1966 book, "If problems in the complex field of human sexual behavior are to be attacked successfully, psychologic theory and sociologic concept must at times find support in physiologic fact. Without adequate support from basic sexual physiology, much of psychological theory will remain theory and much of sociological concept will remain concept... This text represents the first step, a faltering step at best, but at least a first step toward and open-door policy. The door of investigative objectivity must not be closed again." They acknowledge that "The concentration of study subjects from upper socioeconomic and intellectual strata provided by this major source of supply has not been offset by a statistically significant number of lower-range family units obtained from out-patient clinic sources." (Pg. 11)

They summarize: "A more concise picture of physiologic reaction to sexual stimuli may be presented by dividing the human male's and female's cycles of sexual response into four separate phases. Progressively, the four phases are: (1) the excitement phase; (2) the plateau phase; (3) the orgasmic phase; and (4) the resolution phase. This arbitrary four-part division of the sexual response cycle provides an effective framework for detailed description of physiologic variants in sexual reaction." (Pg. 4)

They observe, "The importance of development by marital units of specific coital techniques to facilitate clitoral stimulation has been emphasized repeatedly in the literature." (Pg. 59). They significantly note, "The human female frequently is not content with one orgasmic experience..." (Pg. 64) Later, they add, "the female is capable of maintaining an orgasmic experience for a relatively long period of time." (Pg. 131)

They note, "alteration in male responsive ability usually falls within one or more of six general categories: (1) monotony of a repetitious sexual relationship... (2) preoccupation with career or economic pursuits; (3) mental or physical fatigue; (4) overindulgence in food or drink; (5) physical or mental infirmities of either individual or his spouse; (6) fear of performance ..." (Pg. 260)

Masters and Johnson (who later married, but still later divorced) were the first truly "scientific" sex researchers, and their pathfinding work remains of interest.

Ya know... you think you know it all by now, until...
By M. Evans
I actually thought I had a handle on most things including the bedroom. It just goes to show you that we only stop learning when we die... and even then we will probably learn more! There are details in this book I had forgotten about and some I hadn't realized... and some I'm thrilled to learn. Sure, it has it's boring parts but the information will turn out to be an eye opening refresher coarse in plenty of areas. Your mate would be advantaged to read it as well, maybe for your own benefit! There is nothing wrong with a little mind dusting to bring back some youthful spring air into a room that settled in for the winter. Hey, I like that. I'm going to write that down!

absolutely first-rate popular history with a grand sweep
By Robert J. Crawford
This has got to be one of the greatest history books that I have ever read, and I have read a lot of them. While the story is centered around the development of the Steel industry in the Ruhr Gebiet in Germany, it is also about German history - from its beginnings with the "forest mythology" of the Roman era - all the way up to the 1960s. Unusual for historians, Manchester also has a wonderful grasp of character, which the Krupp family supplied in many, many bizarre variations over several generations. The result is a read of the greatest quality.
Most important, there is the empire of Krupp, as built up by Alfred. At 14, he inherited a steel company that had dwindled under his father's inept management to 5 employees. By sheer grit and a genius for profitable technical innovation, he built it into a vast conglomerate so powerful that it could literally make empires fall. In particular, the company specialised in the development of weapons, from breach-loading cannons to early prototypes for tanks. He even created a cannon (the Big Bertha for his wife), braced along the side of an entire mountain, that could hurl projectiles deep into France from German soil. The details are fascinating, with graceful descriptions that translate their engineering details for laymen.
Alfred controlled everything, from scribbling rules to govern the work force with a pencil nub to relationships with the various ministers of war throughout Europe. There are hilarious scenes where he dines once a year with Bismarck, a great personal friend, and their hysterical laughter at the latter's remark about Napoleon III of France ("Eigentlich ist er dumm"). His drive was so unrelenting that his many failures, such as an early insult to a crucially important aristocrat in the defense ministry (creating a problem for himself that lasted 30 years), took an enormous personal toll - he spent days in bed, depressed and immobile after a failed sale, and his family was a horrible mess.
A large part of the book is about his search for an heir who can run the family business. Here too, the characters are remarkable and often as hilarious or pathetic as their continuing genius for business. One of them was a notorious homosexual, who created an entire bacchanal in a Southern Italian castle for young boys, shooting fireworks for every climax, and when it was discovered - it was illegal in Germany - he committed suicide. You also witness the family energy dissipating until the last generation, when it became a public company with the appointment of Berthold Beitz. (Here there is some personal pique in the author, who writes that the last son, also gay, was "an indolent fool.")
The tableau is so rich that it covers the many moral ambiguities of the times, such as supplying rival powers who would turn Krupp weapons on eachother, including enemies of Germany, and of course the Nazi period is examined. Through all of this, the Krupp do not come off well, even using slave labor by Hitler's victims. (The only criticism I have of the book is the excessive coverage of the Holocaust, which occupies several chapters of personal stories, indicting the last Krupp who was briefly imprisoned and then released to run the company in the 1950s.)
As a business writer, it was a great pleasure to read such a rivetting business story. This book is the fullest of meals.
Warmly recommended.

war is good for business
By ct reader
This work is the cardinal profile of the rise of the `military-industrial complex' in 19-20C Germany. The Krupp legacy (family and firm) is skillfully traced in a lucid, comprehensive account equal to the finest modern history.

Without Krupp, Germany would never have been unified in 1871. Without war, Krupp would never have grown into the wealthiest concern in the world. Each served the other. And tens of millions died.

What price did Krupp pay for key instrumentality in aggressive war? Not much. Gustav (key Nazi donor, appointed `Leader of Industry' in 1933) was judged too infirm for trial in 1945. Alfried (who joined the SS in 1931) spent 3 years in jail (released to much applause in 1951). The firm self destructed 1967-8 (Arndt II, playboy degenerate, wasn't up to the task of renewing the symbiotic relationship).

Krupp armed regimes that killed civilians without remorse. It used slave labor to produce weapons, and operated camps that (given the regimen) supported extermination. All without apology.

Perhaps the most cynical salute to profit is Krupp's ultimate negotiation of a £40,000 settlement in 1926 for patent royalties from Vickers for 640,000 shells the Brits fired at Germans in WW1 (Gustav insisted 4,160,000 shells were fired -- killing 2,080,000 German soldiers -- and £260,000 was due). Thus Krupp, the preeminent German weapons firm, was paid for the death of German soldiers in a lost war.

Though I read it thirty years ago, this book remains important and memorable. Highly recommended.

Mountains of steel
By Paul H.
The Arms of Krupp is a brilliantly written book detailing the rise and fall of one of the most powerful families in history. The family of Krupp was the armorer of the first, second and third German Reichs. The origins of the family's wealth begin with Arndt Krupp surviving the Black Plague and purchasing land that just happened to contain the richest coal deposits in Europe. The firm or die Firma was built on 3 basic principles, innovation (many new alloys, metals, methods and weapons are attributable to the Krupp firm), political leverage, and absolute suzerainty of a single head of the family. Indeed the head of the Krupp family ruled a state with in a state.

Unlike most industrial families, the Krupps appear to understand very early on that the health and welfare of the workers is a necessity of the survival and prosperity of die Firma itself. That fact makes Krupp's treatment of the slave labor (Jewish and Eastern "stucke") even more appalling. Indeed, Krupp violated even the pathetic SS prisoner treatment rules, formed an internal Gestapo, and tortured workers accused of ridiculous crimes (stealing food) considering the treatment they were given.

William Manchester spends a great deal of time on the Holocaust and Krupp's involvement in it. Indeed, Krupp raided captured factories across Europe and enslaved tens of thousands. In my opinion, this period represents the heights of wealth and the depths of morality for the firm and the family. Krupp sold his Reich marks to get real capital and at the same time employed the Nazi slave labor program to maintain production. Wealth generated on the backs of the conquered territories and enslaved peoples.

But the single most damning legacy of the Krupp dynasty is Bushmannhof ? a concentration camp for children of Krupp's slave labor program. Not even children really but infants. No fence was erected around this camp as its prisoners couldn't have escaped even if they were big enough to walk. Witnesses at Nuremburg stated that infants lay naked on rubber sheets too weak to do anything until death came to claim them. In theory, mothers could come visit once per week, but this was impossible and no alternative was ever even considered. In total war, innocence is no protection. While Gustav and Alfried Krupp ate with solid gold place ware in a bombproof bunker. Children of workers forced to keep the rolling presses moving were dying of starvation and preventable diseases.
They were buried in the earth beneath small numbered plaques. Never to laugh, never to play, they were born but to die under the suzerainty of Krupp.

But memories are short, Alfried was released to help forge the swords of the cold war and indeed, at his death in 1968, the Krupp firm was turned into a publicly held company and the only Krupp Heir - his son Arndt - continues to prosper due in a large part to the Lex Krupp, a law issued by Adolph Hilter.

And the little numbered plaques have probably crumbled to nothing by now.

November 1940: In Kingston Harbor, ex-navy pilot Bob Bolles lounges aboard his cutter. After months spent drifting from port to port, his only ironclad rule is no alcohol before noon. But when an American businessman named Malcolm Kingman, his gorgeous socialite wife, and their Swedish butler charter the Thistlewood for a trip to the remote Mercator Island, Bob’s carefree life takes a dangerous and dramatic turn.

By the time he places the Kingmans’ strange accents and realizes what they hope to recover from the deserted island, it’s too late. He is caught in the middle of an international espionage plot with grave implications for the wars raging across Europe and Asia. To keep a powerful military secret from falling into the wrong hands, Bob must dig deep within himself to locate hidden reserves of courage. Easier said than done, as is outwitting Mr. Moto, a top secret agent of Imperial Japan who has been tracking the Thistlewood across the Caribbean Sea.

First serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, John P. Marquand’s popular and acclaimed Mr. Moto Novels were the inspiration for 8 films starring Peter Lorre.

Savvy Spies Swoon, Shoot and Scoot
By Bob Newman
I have no idea if LAST LAUGH, MR. MOTO ever made it to the silver screen, but it should have. Marquand wrote a perfect script for a tropical sleaze B movie (make that C). Every detail is perfect for a Humphrey Bogart starring role. The American drinking himself away in seedy bars gets tapped to take some suspicious characters for a long sail in his yacht. The "wife" of the charterer, who himself has a funny accent, falls in love with this dirty Yank immediately, for what reason I could not tell. But whoa, he turns out to be an ex-navy officer and a pilot to boot; he can throw a mean punch, and outsmart every bad guy, even thought they are professional secret agents and he's been addling his brain with booze for a few years. A wily Oriental (oh, God, he even says "so sorry" a million times) weaves his way in and out of the pages, a murder or two, a pompous British colonial cop without a clue, a local Jamaican who is called `boy' and is bug-eyed in half the scenes, and of course, a pseudo-Swedish gorilla. Caribbean hi-jinx during the early years of World War II, deserted islands, secret weapons, they know that I know that they know that I know.....it's all here, folks. All you have to do is get hold of a copy, sink back into your (hopefully worn-out) sofa and take yourself back to another America, another world, when bad guys were bad, good guys were always strong, and French ladies were soooooooo elegant. The only thing is I never figured out why Mr. Moto got the last laugh. Oh, well, you can't have everything.

This book is part of a series by Marquand, so if you like it, there's a lot more. Go for it !

An old wartime adventure
By Danny T. Harbin
This story was written in 1942 as an espionage adventure, with WWII in progress at the time, and is interesting for that reason alone. The characters are noticeably stereotyped and the plot realistic but non-historic. It has mystery elements but is more of a thriller. If you are expecting something like a Japanese version of Charlie Chan, this isn't it.

Second time around
By Bruce Miles
I seem to be re-reading stories that I had devoured 40 years ago, renewing old friends, so to speak. Moto is a great character (I always visualize Peter Lorre), who plays an ancillary role in the novels. He is never the main character, but is absolutely essential to the story.. Marquand was an excellent writer, a wonderful story-teller. I would like to see all the rest of the novels on Kindle...I have bought the two that are available.

The Remaining
By Kindle Customer
The Remaining is a story of a man (one of 48 "coordinators") who is placed is placed in a bunker every time there is a potential for a "Life as we know it" altering event. Lee and his dog Tango have been in the bunker before - after 9/11 and after the Japan earthquakes and nuclear meltdown... The bunker is a nice place - fully stocked with all the comforts of home and everything that he would need to survive.

Every day, his superior officer checks in and tells him what is going on "upstairs". If the check in is missed, after 48 hrs, then he is to open the "mission box" and follow the instructions after an additional 30 days in lock down.

The author really builds the tension in the first part of the book - I actually was feeling claustrophobic and stopped reading to take the dogs outside for a while because the walls were closing in after his officer missed the check in and Lee started feeling anxious as well.

Lee must now fulfill his mission of connecting with survivors to rebuild and restore the nation but of course, that never goes as planned. No more details because those would be spoiler alerts but I will say that Lee isn't the super solider that you would expect in this type of book - he makes mistakes, things do not go smoothly, and I am ready to see what happens in the next book of the series...

This is not a "zombie" book per say - living breathing running people who have been attacked by a virus that turns them crazy and violent and they can still use tools. And, of course, we have the raiders, the idiots, the rapists, and all the crazy "non infected" that come crawling out like cockroaches to add to the excitement.

Now if only Lee had followed the rules....

Get your book today - you won't regret it...

Surprised at how good
By 308bear
The previous reviewer wrote a good synopsis of the story so I won't repeat the story line. But I want to add what I thought of this book.

The Remaining is an adrenaline pumping adventure that took me by surprise. I have read many books in the zombie genre that left me thinking that the story was just another rehashing of the same old tale. The Remaining is way more than just a zombie tale. In true classical adventure fashion The Remaining presents the reader with good and evil, disaster and the ability to overcome, and a hero in Captain Lee Harden. It reminds me of something that Louis L'Amour could have written had he ventured to tackle a TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It) story. The book ends in a way that I am sure a second volume is planned also.

This is a story that has something for lovers or Post Apocalyptic fiction, Preppers, Survivalists, zombie aficionados, and those who just love a good adventure story. I had a great time reading The Remaining and highly recommend it.

Good read
By Charles F. Kartman
Mr. Molles has some good ideas and conveys them with a pretty clean writing style. The Remaining is on the whole a fairly standard zombie story, wherein the hero is one of a number of trained military men salted around the country in bunkers to serve as seeds for the rebirth of the country. This of course requires a government that is remarkably far-sighted but so inept as to be unable to take any other effective steps to preserve itself against the spread of the infection. Lee, the man in the bunker, is equipped with all sorts of nifty equipment, all lovingly described, but as things play out he ends up relying more on his own training and grit to move his mission along. One of his most important tools is a canine companion, also highly trained, and I found the scenes involving "Tango" to be some of the most effective in the book.

The story follows a pretty predictable path but is entertaining nonetheless. Refreshingly, Lee is no superman and makes his share of mistakes. But he is dedicated to his mission and doesn't let the hordes of zombies stand in his way. It is not clear why the government chose to place single individuals into its bunkers, rather than teams or even families. Do such questions matter in a zombie tale? Mr. Molles has a habit of ending a chapter with a statement about what is to come next, and if he is really dedicated to such a device I recommend that he try subtler forms of foreshadowing in his future work. In sum, The Remaining is a good story that is worth a read.

You would not believe it - but this book is as captivating as some detective or adventure novel. the difference is that instead of digging for gold or looking for long-lost treasures in some Andes, these people are real people, with real lives, and families and jobs - and they are fighting for an ideal that they all believe in.
It just so happens to that this ideal is not that of love, or honor or dignity or anything of the sort, it is not even that of money being th ultimate good as in Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" - it is simply that of not building an Interstate highway in a haphazard manner of not taking into considerations people's homes and ways of existing.
People fight for it just as others were fighting in the French revolution, and that didn't happen in some 17** Paris, but in the late 1960's, here in the United States - in Boston in fact.

American Patriot: The Life and Wars of Colonel Bud Day, by Robert Coram

During the course of his military career, Bud Day won every available combat medal, escaped death on no less than seven occasions, and spent 67 months as a POW in the infamous Hanoi Hilton, along with John McCain. Despite sustained torture, Day would not break. He became a hero to POWs everywhere--a man who fought without pause, not a prisoner of war, but a prisoner at war.

Upon his return, passed over for promotion to Brigadier General, Day retired. But years later, with his children grown and a lifetime of service to his country behind him, he would engage in another battle, this one against an opponent he never had expected: his own country. On his side would be the hundreds of thousands of veterans who had fought for America only to be betrayed. And what would happen next would make Bud Day an even greater legend.

From Booklist
Coram's superb biography of the most decorated living American veteran begins with Bud Day's Great Plains childhood and takes him through joining the air force, marrying his high-school sweetheart, and flying ever-more-demanding missions in Vietnam. After his luck ran out, he escaped from the first POW camp in which he was interned but was recaptured and endured five years of torture in a second. Retiring with the Medal of Honor, he returned to public life a generation later, launching breach-of-contract suits against the Clinton administration for what he perceived as its bad faith in dealing with Vietnam veterans. Although partially disabled and an ongoing sufferer from PTSD, Day remains active in veterans' affairs and Republican politics. Coram's motives for writing the book--see the preface--may raise some eyebrows, but as he did for his previous fighter-pilot biography, Boyd (2002), he has researched thoroughly and written fluently and with sympathy for his subject, an authentic hero worthy of many books. Where do we get such men?
By Richard A. Stratton
"Where do we get such men?"

RAdm George Tarrant, "The Bridges of Toko-ri", James Michener

"When the shooting starts, they call for the sons of bitches."

Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King USN

"He is one of those people for whom everything is either black or white. It is wonderful to go through life like that."

Senator John S. McCain III

This is a story of where we get such men, what happens when the shooting starts and of a life lived in black & white - pure and simple. This is an odyssey of a Sioux City "River Rat" who became a Red River Valley "River Rat". This is a saga of a man who could have been, and might even now be, your neighbor - a fellow American.

There are some folks who are natural aviators, natural fighter pilots and natural warriors. Those of us who have been in recruiting know how difficult it is to identify such "naturals". Our psychologists, our educators, our training "experts" and our consultants all claim to have the answer and they repeatedly come up empty. The ones who come closest are the experienced Marine Drill Instructors, they know a warrior when they see one but even they find it difficult to codify it. George "Bud" Day is a natural - aviator and warrior.

The Marine Corps missed it, only because Bud spend so much time in sick bays that he never had a chance to bloom. The Army National Guard never had a chance. The Air Force never seemed to get the word despite repeated superb performance in a myriad of flying and non flying tasks from the beginning to the end of his Air Force career.

Using dedication to duty and perseverance he survived an endless progression of dead end assignments turning career ending bovine residue into promotion enhancing events. Surviving all sorts of narrow escapes in aviation related incidents he culminated his survival performance by initiating (and obviously surviving) a low level, high speed ejection sans open parachute.

In Vietnam, Bud's service as Misty One resulted from the Air Force having a brain fart and deciding to put airborne FAC's in surplus supersonic jet aircraft with no doctrine or concept of operations. They were not able to find a light colonel with the cajones to undertake the task and dumped it onto the most junior of field grade officers - a major, with direct orders to "just do it". To the surprise of all he did it.

Upon his shoot down, the Vietnamese communists thought they had captured a wimp, and a severely injured one at that, because they had just captured one prior to Bud. But Bud dug into his mid-western stubbornness and USMC field training and escaped captivity in North Vietnam only to be recaptured within sight of his beloved Marines in South Vietnam.

In prison Bud led when his seniors were too beaten up to continue or too faint of heart even to try. Bud had the instinct and brains to recognize that to "return with honor" meant an endless progression of days, one day at a time, in resisting the mind numbing, stultifying, endless efforts of his captors and American traitors, inside and out of North Vietnam, to turn American fighting men into Manchurian Candidates. He saw that the POWs' battle would be one of persistent resistance to every effort to undermine their dedication, patriotism and loyalty. He led despite paying horrible penalties in brutal torture and depravation.

Upon his return Bud found that the politicians and political military leaders did not know what to do with the sons of bitches they let loose to fight their war. The honesty, uncompromising integrity, the ethical mores and the steel wills forged in the fiery furnace (Hoa Lo) of the Hanoi Communist imprisonment were out of place in the pansy world inside the beltway. The Air Force bureaucrats could find no room in the General Officers' Mess for Bud despite his Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross and total of seventy decorations for service and valor, despite his Command Pilot Status, despite his law degree, and despite his unwavering loyalty on active duty during three wars. Go figure. Bud could take a hint; he retired.

Bud soon found that a "grateful nation" that claimed it cannot do enough for its gallant servicemen, the world's "greatest generation" was busy shafting them left and right. Starting under President Carter retired military were being denied medical care they had been promised upon their enlistment by their recruiters. Under Secretary Rumsfeld and his Deputy Dr. Chu, the Department of Defense made concerted effort to block Bud's every legal move to redress this disgrace. What is wrong with this picture? An American Patriot, recipient of the Medal of Honor is placed in the position of having to sue his government for a redress of grievances and the very Department of Defense he defended is taking up arms against him every step of the way. For shame!

In the communist prison system we found that the commonality we had in resisting and surviving came from our families, neighborhoods, schools and churches reinforcing common values of Americanism. We were granted a few extraordinary men to lead us out of that abyss with our souls intact. Bud Day is one of those extraordinary men; he is a prince among men. I am proud to call him "friend".

A Solid Biography
By Tim Challies
George "Bud" Day is the most decorated officer in the modern history of the U.S. military, having won (this is a chest seriously full of medals and ribbons) the Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal for Valor with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal for Merit, Purple Heart with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters, National Order of Vietnam, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Prisoner of War Medal). His military career began in 1942 when, despite being under-sized and under-age, he managed to work his way into the U.S. Marines. He served for almost three years in the South Pacific, never seeing combat. After the war he returned home and studied law, eventually graduating with a degree in that discipline. In 1950 he joined the National Guard and, when called up a year later, applied to fly fighter jets. He soon became one of America's most skilled pilots and, after being promoted, decided to dedicate his career to the Air Force.

In 1967, with the war in Vietnam raging, he was made commander of a secret squadron of F-100 jets and was tasked with Forward Air Control. It was the job of this select group of pilots to fly low to the ground and to seek out and mark targets that other jets could destroy. On August 26 of 1967, his plane was shot down and he suffered serious injuries while ejecting. He was quickly captured but escaped at the first opportunity available and became the only soldier to journey all the way to South Vietnam. Sadly, just moments from reaching the safety of American lines, he was spotted by a North Vietnamese patrol and shot in the leg and hand. He was dragged back into captivity where, for five years he was held, constantly being brutally tortured. While in the "Hanoi Hilton" he met John McCain and the two of them developed a lifelong friendship. He was finally released in the spring of 1973. Three years later he was honored with the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded by the United States.

American Patriot, a new book by Robert Coram, tells the story of Bud Day's life. It begins with his upbringing in a harsh and poverty-stricken home in Sioux City, Iowa and continues to the present day (Day is, after all, still alive). Though Day is best-known for his contributions during the war, his years of public service continue even today. When President Clinton's government passed a law scrapping the life-long health insurance that had been promised to veterans, Day fought on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of vets and won a stunning victory. He also campaigned against John Kerry whom he regards as a traitor because of his inflammatory and untruthful comments during the Vietnam War (and it is worth nothing that Day's torturers used Kerry's testimony against Day when torturing him) and appeared in advertisements for the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Even today, at the age of 82, Day continues to work as a lawyer in Florida, often representing members of the military.

To be honest, I read this book as a form of light distraction because of a good deal of heavy reading I have been doing. It served its purpose well. Day has lived a fascinating life and truly is a patriot. His highest belief seems to be in the value and importance of America and he looks with unforgivable disdain on anyone who would become a traitor to his nation. He has dedicated his life to serving his country and reacts with anger and outrage to those who violate her highest ideals.

While the book is largely well-written, it is clearly a favorable biography and may even almost dive occasionally into the realm of hagiography. The author turns too often to hyperbole and melodrama when considering Day's virtues while passing quickly over his vices. The Prologue may be the most melodramatic prose I've read this side of high school and made me wonder if I'd be able to finish the book. Thankfully it was short-lived and got much better after that. I should note that quite a number of words of the four-letter variety are used throughout the book (including a multi-paragraph exposition of the number of ways pilots use the word "s--t."). It is, after all, a book about a fighter pilot, a breed known for his arrogance, self-assuredness and foul mouth. Day is not the theologian or hero of church history I typically read about in biographies!

American Patriot was a good read and one that isn't entirely irrelevant as the 2008 Presidential campaign begins to heat up. Veterans played a critical role in the last election and Bud Day served as a leader. I wouldn't be surprised if his face and his name are in the news again as a new election nears. This book is a good and interesting read for anyone wit

An American Patriot, indeed!
By William T. Dillon
SUGGESTION -- Be sure to set aside a block of time to devote to AMERICAN PATRIOT: THE LIFE AND WARS OF COLONEL BUD DAY. The force of Bud Day's character and the flowing clarity of Robert Coram's writing will rivet you. In the process, America's moral strength sharpened by the Great Depression and by WWII set the stage for Bud's moral triumph over his vicious North Vietnamese communist torturers for over five and a half years. Each fierce lash of the "fan belt" on Bud's bloodied backside and legs strengthened his will to defeat the murderous goons. Each minute of the rope torture and each re-breaking of his bones reinforced his understanding and practice of the military Code of Conduct for POWs.

It is difficult for those not connected with the military, especially with the patriotism of WWII warriors, to understand not only how but why Bud suffered and persevered as he did for his fellow POWs and to preserve the secrets of his former "Misty" F-100 fighter unit. The sense of the matter presents itself through the clearly packaged facts and pace of the biography and Coram's craft in bringing alive each element of Bud's development as an individual and as a military "community" leader whose service spanned three major wars: World War II, Korea and Vietnam as an enlisted Marine, Army reservist, Iowa National Guard Officer and Air Force Officer.

Our Founding Fathers knew the exceptional nature of that community and enshrined that understanding in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution by declaring Congress prescribes the rules governing that society of warriors. As a rare fighter pilot lawyer, Bud knew and practiced the legal and social bonds of the warrior brotherhood.

Fortunately, his primary torturer, the "Bug" -- so named because one of his eyes aped Marty Feldman's -- did not know the object of his animal fury was a lawyer whose master's thesis defined the evils of communism which laid the groundwork defending the U2 spy plane overflights as a logical extension of America's real war with the USSR.

Sustaining Bud through the hideous "quiz" sessions were the memories of his childhood sweetheart and wife, Doris, and his four adopted, or in President Reagan's words of Michael, "chosen" children. In happier times, Doris and Bud constantly talked with each other about these four important decisions as well as the common daily events. They continue these close talks 60 plus years later and at various functions today can be seen holding hands under the dinner table.

During Bud's imprisonment, Doris helped form a POW wives group educating the country on their plight and even went to the N. Vietnamese delegation in Paris seeking freedom or humane treatment for Bud and his fellow POWs. She and her fellow POW wives were so effective that they got President Nixon's attention and emphasis.

He acted on that knowledge with Linebacker II heavy bombing raids from 18-29 December 1972 where the safest place in Hanoi was the POW prison where the North Vietnamese came to cower among the ecstatic POWs. The raids drove the N. Vietnamese back to the negotiating tables. The first prisoners were released 12 February 1973 and the last left Hanoi 29 March 1973. Bud was released 12 March 1973, victorious to America's military cause to the end.

His fellow POWs endorsed his victory by submitting him for the Air Force Cross for enduring such hideous torture and the Congressional Medal of Honor for escaping in North Vietnam and evading recapture although grievously wounded. He was within earshot of freedom at Con Thien, South Vietnam when he was recaptured.

Upon release, the actions of each POW were made known by the senior officer who rated them according to their actions and Code of Conduct. These evaluations caused immediate career halts for those POWs released "early" by the communists. At least one on the general officer promotion list never pinned on his star and soon retired from the Air Force.

Later, when John Kerry saluted the camera and said he was reporting for duty as a presidential candidate, the furor throughout the POW community and Swift Boat Vets was palpable and unrelenting. This goofy salute began the campaign to reveal Kerry the shallow phony he is. As Bud and his cohorts stopped careers of those who cooperated with the enemy and those released before Linebacker II, so did Bud and the Swifties stop Kerry's bid.

Bud continues to defend service members in his practice and carried on a mostly successful class action suit to reinstate free health care promise to those joining the military before 1956. This long proclaimed benefit was denied them by President Clinton and Congress. The biography describes that latest virtuous battles which has seen the health care 95% restored largely because of Bud's legal battles which moved Congress to establish the TRICARE For Life medical program.

Who knows if the last 5% will be reinstated and become free as formerly promised? Perhaps this biography signals the show is not over yet. After all, "free" an absolute statement - a black or white statement.

His former cell mate, John McCain summarized Bud this way: "He's one of those people for whom everything is black or white. It's wonderful to go through life like that. I wish I could." (p. 373)

While Bud and McCain may disagree on various issues, they remain close friends who seem to know when the other needs a friendly phone call to help lift low spirits. The bond of military loyalty is unshakeable.

American Patriot will help all gain an insight into that part of the military culture and martial spirit George Washington and the founders knew so well.

I suspect American Patriot will become a military classic.
