From Publishers Weekly
In this captivating, gossipy, withering biography, Time writer Ogden portrays Harriman--a major Democratic fund-raiser, backer of Clinton and currently U.S. ambassador to France--as a coolly calculating opportunist who parlayed her ambition into vast wealth and political clout by targeting rich and famous men. An English baron's daughter, Pamela Digby in 1939, at age 19, wed hedonistic, alcoholic Randolph Churchill and moved into Downing Street, where she helped her father-in-law, Sir Winston, by acting as an intelligence broker during WW II. Her second marriage to ebullient, barbiturate-addicted Broadway producer Leland Hayward put her in the vortex of the golden age of the American musical. She used the wealth of her third husband, the late statesman Averell Harriman, to resuscitate the Democratic Party's fortunes. Ogden catalogues Harriman's numerous liaisons (Edward R. Murrow, Elie de Rothschild, Aly Khan, Fiat auto magnate Gianni Agnelli, etc.) in this unauthorized tell-all based on months of interviews with her for a proposed autobiography that was abandoned. From Booklist
The introduction of this book immediately sets the tone. The scene is a Georgetown dinner party, where the guest of honor is president-elect Bill Clinton, come to pay homage to a woman who, among others, has supported his presidential bid. Clinton toasts her as the "First Lady of the Democratic Party." Smiles all around because life is so good in the upper class--and so begins a biography that is essentially a parade of political names from World War II to the present. It can be interesting to know who was sleeping with whom and when, of course. And who asked our heroine for timely advice at yet another important moment in history. But what is probably just as engaging is trying to determine if the rich and powerful really are this shallow. Brian McCombie

From Kirkus Reviews
If the current US ambassador to France, Pamela Harriman, had spent as much time on her back as this book suggests, she would never have had the time to do the world-class housekeeping and flower arrangements that allegedly endeared her to her lovers--let alone become an authority on antiques, bring together historic personalities for global policy discussions, or raise millions of dollars for the Democratic party. Time correspondent Ogden (Maggie, 1990, a biography of Margaret Thatcher) was tapped to do the authorized Pam bio but was dumped, he says, when Ambassador Harriman got cold feet. Ogden had already keyed off ``some forty hours of interviews'' with the subject, for which he was not remunerated according to their original agreement. That may or may not have influenced his perspective when he decided to write the story anyway: He seems to view Harriman as a world-class courtesan. Chapters are for the most part named for the men in her life: Randolph (Churchill--first husband); Averell (Harriman--WW II lover and, decades later, third husband); Bill (Paley, CBS head); Ed (Murrow); JFK (misleading--she was friends with his sister); Gianni (Agnelli, Fiat head); Elie (de Rothschild); Leland (Hayward--second husband); Frank (Sinatra- -houseguest, no affair). For the first 16 (of 19) chapters, the author sniffs disapprovingly at her romantic life (more because she apparently let her lovers support her than because she was promiscuous), although he does admit that father-in-law Winston Churchill and his wife loved and protected her (even after her marriage to Randolph ended) as did most of her ex-lovers. Short on formal education but long on listening skills, Harriman trained that talent on a life lived by her own rules. This is fun to read as the names drop, but it offers more titillation than insight into a woman who rode out from a proper Dorset upbringing to adventure, wealth, power--and acknowledged achievement. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. What a fun read!
By HeyJudy
One can tell just from the photograph chosen for the cover of LIFE OF THE PARTY that author Christopher Ogden has constructed a fun read. Though his research is thorough and scholarly, LIFE OF THE PARTY flies by easily. (The title itself is a pun, alluding both to its literal meaning and to the fact that Harriman's generous donations gave new life to America's Democratic Party.)
In crafting the biography of America's late Ambassador to France, Pamela Harriman, Ogden also provides a social history of the international "Jet Set" of the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. Pamela's journey through the decades was complete with English aristocracy, French nobility, Italian racing car drivers, South American polo players, Arab sheiks, Greek shipping magnates and members of America's monied elite. The link among them is that Pamela Harriman slept with members of each of these groups!
In her own, less liberated day, born to obscure English nobility c. 1920, there is no question but that then-Pamela Digby would have been considered a--ahem--loose woman (to use a mild phrase) by those who knew her. Not only did she sleep around, apparently with blatant calculation of how her liasons would benefit her financially and socially, but she also conspicuously went after married men. With the exception of her first husband, the single thread connecting the men she chose was that they were not merely rich, they were filthy rich. And her first husband was the son of Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England at the time of their marriage. Thus, that match was socially advantageous to Pamela, and she would use the connection as her entry into highest levels of the world's interconnected rich. Nonetheless, despite her apparent rapacity, it is obvious that her men found her... appealing, to say the least.
Some of the affairs that Ogden documents were with the fabulously wealthy Frenchman, Elie de Rothschild, with the fabulously wealthy oil sheik, Aly Khan, with the fabulously wealthy Italian auto manufacturer, Gianni Agnelli, with a fabulously wealthy American, Averell Harriman and another fabulously wealthy American, William Paley. Yet she married the merely wealthy theatrical producer, American Leland Hayward, whose daughter openly despises Pamela to this day. (It seems clear that Pamela settled on Leland due to an urgent need to wed quickly as a matter of financial salvation.)
Of course, Pamela was a serial bride. Decades after she first began her affair with him, Averell Harriman finally tied the knot with Pamela. He had been middle-aged when they first had met, and she had been a very young woman. By the time she captured him, she was middle-aged and he was old. Conveniently, he died soon after their marriage and, even more conveniently, he left her his huge fortune.
She immediately put that fortune to use in inserting herself as a valuable player in the United States Democratic Party and as an early and generous supporter of then-candidate Bill Clinton. After he became President, Clinton rewarded Pamela by making her his Ambassador to France.
Truly, if this book were a romance novel, it would be dismissed out-of-hand as being too implausible. As it stands, it is an examination of an exploitative and greedy woman, yet a woman whose lifestory makes for entertaining reading. For the major events of the mid-20th century, when Pamela Digby Churchill Hayward Harriman was not present, she probably was waiting in the bedroom.

Pamela Harriman: Behind the scenes
By Noel Brusman
Ogden has done a masterful job in telling the Pamela Harriman story. He had the good fortune to interview Pamela at length (before she decided she wanted to write a political journal with herself at the center, instead of an autobiography with Ogden's help) and he helps us understand the motives behind her love affairs and marriages. An experienced journalist, Ogden writes well and objectively. It remains a mystery to readers of all of Pamela's biographies exactly what made her fascinating to some of the world's most important and successful men. I guess you had to be there. If you are interested in reading about a "courtesan" who continually reinvented herself and was finally rewarded with the job of her dreams - Ambassador to France - this is the book to read. In essence, she was a minor player who cast a big shadow thanks to her relentless self-promotion and ability to enchant otherwise smart, powerful men.

"The Catalyst on a Hot Tin Roof"
By Herbert L Calhoun
"Pam," as she was known by her friends, trading on her beauty, inquisitiveness and instincts, more than on her morals: again and again parlayed her feminine wiles into higher and higher orbits of class, wealth, international intrigue and a seat at the very table where high stakes policy was being shaped and made. Even one of her many lives would have been enough for an ordinary person to kill for, but being able to do it over and over again points to her very own special gift: being perfectly situated to marry older men of influence and then making them like it, as she "traded up " the ladder to better and better situations.

Just her wartime activities alone, is worth the price of the book.

Here, behind the scenes where the post-WWII world order was being shaped and fashioned, she played an important if unsung role as one of the king pin (or is it queen pin?) deal makers, that helped solidify the ties between the U.S. and UK, ties that eventually were responsible for bringing the U.S. into the war. She did this all the while being married to the notorious "bad boy" and son of Sir Winston Churchill, Randolph, and while "bedding down" one of her "husbands-to be," Averill Harriman. And she did this, all the while, if not with the full knowledge, certainly with the tacit knowledge of her father in law, the British Prime Minister.

Just this part of the book alone is worth its price, but there is much more: all with the ring of truth, not with the ring of mere salacious gossip, which I admit, is all that I was really looking for. In the book "Nemesis," it had been reported as fact that Joseph P. Kennedy had raped Pam while she was an overnight guest of her friend the then Ambassador to the UK's daughter, Kathleen. I was unable to confirm this fact in this "unauthorized" version of her life. This omission, however, certainly does not mean that it did not happen, just that it could not be confirmed in this version of her life story. And even though I did not find what I was looking for, this is still easily five stars.

Great Expansion on an Amazing Game
By Sherlocked
This manga expands on the game more than the game itself (or the 1.5HD cinematic), so, if you're on the fence, go for it. There's lots of little details in the manga that brings out the characters much, much more.

Luxord tries to teach Roxas to be a gambler and ends up on the losing side. (The losing side in Wonderland? A Luxord that nearly gets eaten by the Cheshire Cat.)
They go looking for Shadow Globs in the White Rabbits' house and get caught for trespassing. (But not before Roxas thinks putting on the maid's uniform would make him LESS conspicuous.)
Luxord gets used as a croquet ball and we see the nasty fire-wielding Pranksters (or were they called Tricksters?) boss in manga form.
We also meet the Caterpillar and the Red Queen.

Axel gets tired of hearing Saïx tearing Xion down and actually says something about it in the manga. He calls him a jerk without knowing he's listening and then gets angry later when thinking about things that Saïx told him. All in all, point here? There's a lot more 'Lea/Isa' in the manga. Or... references, anyway. It really gets under Axel's skin what Saïx is up to. It's nice to read that things happening between them still bother them because of the friendship they used to have.

Roxas and Axel go on a mission to Neverland.
The Lost Boys capture Roxas and Axel and tie them up around a tree because they think they're pirates. (And the look on Axel's face in that panel is priceless.)
Enter Peter Pan and Captain Hook, and, of course, Tinkerbell.
The Ruler of the Sky, also, and naturally, makes its manga appearance. (Because, after playing that level in the game, who REALLY wants to see that boss anymore?)

The manga ends up on a cliffhanger (of course).

The moments I mentioned in my review take up maybe ten pages throughout. There is a LOT more going on throughout the book, but I wanted to point out some moments that stuck out at me in hopes of making someone curious enough to want to investigate themselves.

All in all, if you liked the game as much as I did, or you like Roxas/Axel/Xion, it's worth it to invest. There's plenty that we never see in the game that makes it all the more emotional and worth the read.

Pop. 1280, by Jim Thompson

Nick Corey is a terrible sheriff on purpose. He doesn't solve problems, enforce rules or arrest criminals. He knows that nobody in tiny Potts County actually wants to follow the law and he is perfectly content lazing about, eating five meals a day, and sleeping with all the eligible women.

Still, Nick has some very complex problems to deal with. Two local pimps have been sassing him, ruining his already tattered reputation. His girlfriend Rose is being terrorized by her husband. And then, there's his wife and her brother Lenny who won't stop troubling Nick's already stressed mind. Are they a little too close for a brother and a sister?

With an election coming up, Nick needs to fix his problems and fast. Because the one thing Nick does know is that he will do anything to stay sheriff. Because, as it turns out, Sheriff Nick Corey is not nearly as dumb as he seems.

In Pop. 1280, widely regarded as a classic of mid-20th century crime, Thompson offers up one of his best, in a tale of lust, murder, and betrayal in the Deep South that was the basis for the critically acclaimed French film Coup de Torchon.

Review
WWW.TANGLED-WEB.CO.UK featured a review of POP. 1280 on their site from the 21st March 03. This included a summary of the plot. WRITER'S JOURNAL will be publishing a large feature on Jim Thompson and will be mentioning our new titl

From the Inside Flap
As high sheriff of Potts County, Nick Corey spends most of his time eating, sleeping and avoiding trouble. If only people--especially some troublesome pimps, his foul-tempered wife, and his half-witted brother-in-law--would stop pushing him around. Because when Nick is pushed, he begins to kill . . . or to make others do his killing for him!

About the Author
Jim Thompson was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma. He began writing fiction at a very young age, selling his first story to True Detectivewhen he was only fourteen. Thompson eventually wrote twenty-nine novels, all but three of which were published as paperback originals. Thompson also co-wrote two screenplays (for the Stanley Kubrick films The Killing and Paths of Glory). Several of his novels have been filmed by American and French directors, resulting in classic noir including The Killer Inside Me (1952), After Dark My Sweet(1955), and The Grifters (1963).

This One Creeps Up On You
By Untouchable
It would appear at the start of this book that Nick Corey, the sheriff of the town of Pottsville, is to be the hero of the story. He seems like a gentle, somewhat simple man who believes that inaction is always the most prudent course of action. He feels it "just wouldn't seem right" to have to arrest people, so generally, he doesn't. But slowly it began to dawn on me that this is a Jim Thompson book and there simply aren't heroes in his books.
It turns out that Nick Corey is quite similar to another Jim Thompson character, Lou Ford from The Killer Inside Me. In fact, it's worthwhile reading both books to compare these two characters. They are so different, yet incredibly similar.
The chilling thing about this book lies in how deeply convinced everyone is that Nick is a simpleton who is a harmless, lazy man. But the truth is apparent to the reader how rat-cunning he actually is. The desire to be re-elected to his post as sheriff drives his day-to-day activity and everyone underestimates just how far he'll go to ensure his re-election, myself included.
Apart from the sinister actions of Nick Corey, the story is actually quite amusing, told in the first person in a light and witty tone of voice. Nick manages to put an amusing spin on all aspects of his day-to-day life, most especially the parts in which he's doing absolutely nothing at all.
This is a typical Jim Thompson story. There are no heroes, as a matter of fact; there are few, if any, likable characters in the book. The main character narrates in a style that feels as though he's saying: here are the facts, make of them what you will. It's a chiller rather than a mystery and events took me by surprise more than once.

One of Thompson's Best
By Westley
POP. 1280 is in the tradition of other great Thompson books, such as THE KILLER INSIDE ME. The protagonist is a seemingly respectable, law-abiding citizen -- small-town Southern sheriff, Nick Corey. He's been pushed around by his wife, brother-in-law, and most other town folks. In the beginning it's clear that Corey has been a very passive sheriff, and his anger at being considered weak is building. The book chronicles how he slowly and dramatically strikes back. Corey's much smarter than most of the town thinks, but he's also probably delusional, which is what ultimately makes this book such a black comic gem. There are more laugh-out loud moments in this book than in most Thompson books. The plot depends on a number of coincidences and stretches of logic, but it's great fun and there are some truly great surprises along the way. Overall, I think it's one of Thompson's most enjoyable and funny books, with some memorable moments and characters.

So much more than just a crime novel
By High Duke
I wonder if Jim Thompson has ever been declared the master of crime novel fiction? If he hasn't, then he certainly gets my vote! No one writes tales that are more cynical, more twisted or more accurate in their perceptions of human depravity. You can have Chandler, Cain, Ellroy, Hammett and all the rest. Thompson tops them all. The most unique thing about Thompson's novels is that he really has no moral center in any of them. In fact, in this book, he even puts you in the shoes of the despicable main character. The novel concerns a bumbling sheriff in a small Southern town, who seems to be a spineless coward and a lazy lay-about. All is not as it seems however, as the sheriff proves to be much more intelligent than anyone would dream of giving him credit for. Thompson mined similar terrain in his book 'The Killer inside Me', but this novel actually tops that one in terms of nastiness and its vitriolic view of human nature. There are a few elements in Thompson's book that strike me as unique. One is his pessimistic misanthropy which takes things a step further from the previous generations of crime novelists. There are no private investigators with a heart of gold here. Another is his dismantling of the idea of America's heartland as being this place of good souls and kind neighbourliness. Thompson was from Oklahoma and, as he knows the surrounding areas intimately, his novels seem to take place in the American South and Southwest. He exposes it as a place that's even MORE corrupt than in the big cities. Chandler, Cain and a lot of other writers usually focused on places like New York and L.A. as the pillars of American decadence. Thompson points out that the WHOLE of America is a swirling cesspool of self-interested swindlers and the only thing that varies is scale. The Sheriff in the novel carefully depicts the town as a stifling, rabid and, dare I say, neo-Facist community, where any behaviour outside the norm is abhorred and subject to the townfolks' vindictive whims. The Sheriff sees all this and schemes and plots ways to maintain his 'easy' lifestyle. The ironic thing is that all the running around and strees seem like MORE work than maybe just making an honest living. What seems most universal about the book is that the main protagonists struggle to maintain his position atop the heap, no matter how small and useless it is, is a reflection of what goes on all over the world, every day, for as long as people have been around. Admittedly, it's bleak, but it's extremely fascinating. One reality is that people will do anything and everything when power and money is involved. This is, by far, Thompson's most sinister character in any of his books. The fact that the Sheriff gets away with what he does, under the guise of sub-civility, is an idictment of the people that we are expected to most trust and respect in this world. This book is probably Thompson's finest work, even though 'The Killer Inside Me' is far more popular. He encapsulates his feelings towards the world so vividly here that I couldn't put the book down. I finished it in two days it was so good. It amazes me how he can capture the black heart of the world, the root of what makes everything function, in such a compact form. Bravo Jimmy! You hit the nail right on the head. Oh, and I love the film noir-ish book covers on all of Thompson's books. They're just beautiful.

Simple System Eases Wildflower Identification
By Craig L. Howe
The author's system allows even amateurs like me to quickly and accurately identify wildflowers.
It is as simple as answering five questions which point the user to the appropriate page in the book where the flower is described and pictured. The text is great. The first sentence of each description distinguishes that plant from all others in that group.
If you are looking for a wildflower guide, they do not get better than this one.

Wildflowers made easy: an indispensable reference.
By Morrie Gasser (morrie@gasser.ultranet.com)
If you're going to buy just one book on wildflower identification, this is it. While not foolproof, this system is the best I've seen. It beats by far other methods using color and shape of flower, as used in the Audubon and Peterson field guides (though both the latter have their place, and you should get both if you're really serious).
A most unique aspect of this book is that it includes shrubs as well as plants normally considered wildflowers, adding greatly to its utility for the amateur observer.

Perfect Guide for the Southern Appalachians
By James Wilson
I've noticed from other reviews that this guide is seen to be specific to the northeast. When I first wanted to learn about wildflowers I took a workshop in the western NC mountains and this was the the required text. Every wildflower that we identified was in the book. It seems that the cooler mountain elevations offer the same climate found in New England and Canada. Also, learning by leaf type makes it a lot easier to identify the plant when it's not blooming. I've had a copy of it in my car for the last 10 years and intend on keeping it there.

Amazon.com Review
Welcome to the world! Todd Parr, creator of Underwear Do's and Don'ts, The Feelings Book, This Is My Hair, and many more witty and unique picture books, provides an answer to all those busy, modern, even nontraditional families who want a baby book but can't quite find the time. The first-person style invites children to fill it out themselves (with help, of course). In addition to conventional features--a place for handprint, footprint, lock of hair, birth announcement, photos, etc.--Parr also allots space to record Baby's family (with boxes to check next to "My mom[s]," "My dad[s]," etc.), whether or not Baby has an outie belly button or dimples, the types of silly faces Baby likes to make, and who takes care of her/him when parents are busy. Fill-in-the-blanks, multiple choice questions, and checklists make completing the book easy and, at times, hilarious. "The first time my parents had to be away from me I cried (yes/no), they cried (yes/no), the babysitter cried (yes/no)." Parr's signature vibrant colors and bold pen strokes on his childlike character drawings ensure that this is one baby book that will truly stand out in a crowd. A pocket on the inside back cover can be used to store photos and cards, and a growth chart and stickers are also included. It's unusual, but completely and delightfully functional as a baby book. --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
Another way to celebrate a new addition, My Really Cool Baby Book by Todd Parr, boasts Parr's signature neon-bright colors, energetic humor (e.g., "Here is a picture of me as a baby I'm so cute!") and consideration of children's feelings (there are pages for adopted children and stepfamily members). The oversize, square format provides plenty of room for photos, cards and for noting favorite nicknames, toys and songs. A 36" growth chart records the baby's progress from "teeny tiny" (pictured as a fish) to "BIG!" (signified by a giraffe), and stickers aplenty will liven up the pages.

A great book for non-traditional families
By L. Routley
When we brought home our first foster child with the hope of adopting, we felt she needed to have a baby book like any other baby would have. But we had a really hard time finding a good one. I didn't want to have to leave a lot pages blank when I didn't know all of the information that a traditional baby book asks ("When my mom found out she was pregnant, she ..."). Then I found this book. There's one page that says, "Some special babies are adopted" and a box to check that says "I was." One page says, "I'm lucky because I have..." and you write how many moms, dads, etc. The pages are easy to fill out with a lot of choice boxes to check. It's colorful with silly pictures that the child will enjoy looking out as she gets older. We're now on our second "foster with the hope of adoption" child and we're going to use this book again.

Fun Baby Book
By Susan
Like Todd Parr's other books, this is a fun book with great illustrations. We bought it for our second child. We've had some difficulty compared to other baby books in that the pages are of "shiny" nature and sometimes dark making it a little difficult to find an appropriate pen to add comments.

Best Baby Book Ever
By K. Lynch
this is just right up my alley. non-traditional, thoughtful, FUN baby book with all the extras. if you're not into the typical pastel, uptight baby stuff, this is the book for you. it has EVERYTHING a standard baby book has only with more color, more inclusion of non-traditional families, and some surprises. A+!

Brute: The Life of Victor Krulak, U.S. Marine, by Robert Coram

From the earliest days of his thirty-four-year military career, Victor "Brute" Krulak displayed a remarkable facility for applying creative ways of fighting to the Marine Corps. He went on daring spy missions, was badly wounded, pioneered the use of amphibious vehicles, and masterminded the invasion of Okinawa. In Korea, he was a combat hero and invented the use of helicopters in warfare. In Vietnam, he developed a holistic strategy in stark contrast to the Army's "Search and Destroy" methods-but when he stood up to LBJ to protest, he was punished. And yet it can be argued that all of his these accomplishments pale in comparison to what he did after World War II and again after Korea: Krulak almost single-handedly stopped the U.S. government from abolishing the Marine Corps.

From Publishers Weekly
Coram (Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War) clearly admires Krulak (1913–2008), a contentious Marine leader, and most readers will agree. Son of Jewish immigrants (a fact he suppressed), he attended Annapolis to obtain a free education. After observing Japanese naval operations as a young officer in 1937, he worked tirelessly to promote his design for what later became the Higgins boat, which proved essential for WWII amphibious operations. A decade later, he fought for acceptance of the helicopter. Krulak won numerous decorations for courage and rose to high command, where, Coram claims, his Marines enjoyed greater success than the army in Vietnam, although bitter quarrels with superiors and President Johnson over the war's conduct denied him his dream of becoming Marine Corps commandant. Despite Coram's high regard for Krulak and worshipful view of the Marines, he reveals innumerable details that Krulak suppressed, distorted, or invented in oral histories. Coram portrays a driven, fiercely outspoken. but creative warrior who probably deserves his legendary status. 8 pages of b&w photos. (Nov.) (c)

From Booklist
Coram’s third fine biography of one of the American armed force’s stormy petrels tells the life of Lieutenant General Victor Krulak, U.S. Marine Corps. Krulak began his public career by concealing his Jewish background at Annapolis, then went on to see combat in WWI. Between the wars, he carried out covert intelligence missions and development work on the equipment for amphibious operations. After combat in WWII, he was invaluable in the Pentagon infighting that saved the marine corps both then and after Korea. He commanded the marines in the Pacific during part of the Vietnam War, and his disagreements with Kennedy, Johnson, and McNamara probably cost him his chance to be commandant of the corps. Something of a diamond in the rough, he lived to see two of his sons as prominent Episcopal clergymen and his other son retire as commandant of the corps. Probably the best epitaph for Krulak is the one he might well have preferred: a good Marine. --Roland Green

Review
"Coram captures General Krulak's striding march across the Marine Corps, and across the American century...[and] is a meticulous investigator of the things that drove Brute Krulak, not all of them pretty... Brute is plainspoken and absorbing...and captures its subject in strokes that are sharp, simple and often funny." (New York Times Dwight Garner)

"Mr. Coram has produced a valuable work that significantly revises our understanding of-but does not diminish our respect for-one of the all-time great Marines." (Wall Street Journal Max Boot)

"A well-written tale about a complicated yet admirable man." (The Washington Times James Srodes)

"Robert Coram has written a long-needed biography of Lieutenant General "Brute" Krulak that captures the critical role he played in some of the seminal events in the history of the Marine Corps...Coram's masterful portrayal of Krulak's complex personality accurately depicts a leader who drove both himself and his Marines to excel, no matter what the cost." (USMCR(Ret), author of Chesty: The Story of Lieutenant General Lewis B. Puller, USM Colonel Jon T. Hoffman)

"A great book, a compelling and insightful look at one of America's greatest heroes. Like the man himself it tells the truth, blemishes and all, about this pivotal figure in American history. Brute Krulak's intelligence, courage and tenacity saved countless lives in three wars and perhaps saved the Marine Corps itself." (author of I'm Staying with My Boys Jim Proser)

"Splendid...Robert Coram is one of America's premier military biographers, both a gifted story-teller and adept at putting a life into historical context. His books on Bud Day and John Boyd will endure....If you're a present or future Marine; if you once wore the uniform; if you wish you still did (or could fit into it); if you think you once wore the uniform; if you love a Marine or care about the Marines; if you care about America - get it. This is an unpaid, unsolicited testimonial. It's just that there's so much junk out there these days, when something good comes along, it's almost a patriotic duty to mention it. And the subject is fascinating." (Seattle Post-Intelligencer Philip Gold)

"Along with this brisk, highly readable, strongly reported biography's other attributes, add impeccable timing." (Los Angeles Times Tony Perry)

"A revealing-and troubling-portrait of a much-revered figure." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Brute is a must read for all Marines, however no matter your branch of the service or level of interest in the military, this is a great and important story. The author takes you on a biographical, historical and emotional journey that is tantalizing from the very beginning. Strategy, technology, power and politics are abundant. The Veterans Hour easily rates Brute (4) Stars." (The Veterans Hour)

"Brute is a well-told tale-a gritty but fair reflection of a hard, cerebral man heeding his own code of honor while managing to thrive in the hardball arenas of war and politics." (AARP Mel Baughman)

EXCELLENT biography with perspective.
By J. Scott Shipman
Robert Coram is a national treasure and the recent release of BRUTE confirms his position as one of America's premier military biographers. Mr. Coram took the straight and true method of portraying a genuine great man, but not in absence of his humanity. As Norman Maclean observes in his classic A River Runs Through It, man is a "damned mess;" even the great and the hero has flaws, and General Krulak was no exception. Coram correctly observes in the Acknowledgements:

"Some aspects of Brute Krulak's early years are disturbing. I elected to take an explanatory stance toward those years. Some will say I should have replaced the frail reed of sympathy with the righteous sword of judgement. But my sins as a young man were scarlet, and they were many. I do not consider those green actions the defining moments of my life and if I am to be measured, let it be by the deeds of my later years. Here I afforded Brute Krulak what I would ask for myself."

Wow! It would be nice if more biographer's used such a perspective; as a great man once said to me, "It is not how you start, it is how you finish."

General Krulak did his Corps proud and sometimes it was not pretty, but he held a passionate love for his country and his Corps. Mr. Coram presents a man of single minded purpose, who kept his Corps relevant because he knew that is what America wanted and continues to need. Mr. Coram traces the life story of a man driven to achieve and contribute. From General Krulak's contributions to the development in the years leading up to WWII of amphibious warfare as a core competency to his largely rejected ideas of counterinsurgency warfare in Vietnam, Mr. Coram paints the portrait of a man of substance, intellect, and passion. Our country needs more senior officers who have the courage of their convictions and tell the truth to their civilian leaders---especially when what needs to be said isn't pleasant.

I read BRUTE in two sittings and enjoyed it thoroughly.

If you enjoyed Mr. Coram's biographies of John Boyd and Bud Day, get this book and read it! Highest recommendation!!

Intriguing look at a complex man
By The Cashmere Bookworm
In a breathtaking career spanning the 1930's through the 60's, LtGen Victor Krulak left his mark not only on the Corps, but also on the victory of WWII. He was also the father of 3 sons who all served, the most recently known, General Chuck Krulak who was the 31st Commandant of The Marine Corps. The Krulak name in the history of the Marines is well known, and for good reason. However, his rise, and his family's hold is one that perhaps no one of a certain lineage-dependent mindset could have predicted in the first quarter of the twentieth century.

Born in 1913, Krulak didn't fit the external mold of those who traditionally ascended the ranks of the military to make a full-blown career of it --at least on the surface. He was not descended from a familial line who had served in the military. Plus, was short, and had a roughness hewn from growing up in Cheyenne, Wyoming when it still very much was the wild west. Krulak was also Jewish.

Writer Robert Coram unravels the strands of mystery surrounding Krulak's roots. While Coram makes far more of Krulak's Jewish roots than the man did himself, the writer does so to reveal Krulak's drive. Perhaps rather than say Krulak reinvented himself, it would not be unreasonable to say that Krulak discovered himself in the genteel halls of Annapolis. The person who emerged was Episcopalian, a new-traditionalist, with just a hint of the dust from the plains of Cheyenne. To Krulak, where he was going was far more important than from where he had come.

The drop-bow Higgins-boat, used in amphibious landings throughout the Pacific and at Normandy, was the result of Krulak's observations of similar craft designed and used by the Japanese during the second Sino-Japanese war. It was in Shanghai, where Krulak hit his stride, showing signs of becoming the innovator, inventor, leader, and logician. His contributions not included the Higgins, but strategy for the invasion of Okinawa, and acting as an advocate for use of helicopters in combat. Most notably, Krulak saved the Marines from being disbanded after WWII by the Army-centric administrations following.

Coram writes with a deft pen. His passages on Belleau Wood, Shanghai, and the many battles in the Pacific are compelling reading --not only for those already familiar, but most especially for those who know nothing about either the Marines or history. While Krulak himself expressed discomfort for "womb to tomb" stories, he and his family had confidence in Coram's ability and participated in the telling of this biography. Rather than dwelling only on his accomplishments and lionizing Krulak, Coram shows us his complexities. While this makes for passages that slow the pace of the book and reveals details others would omit for the sake of a gentler exit, Coram stays the course to give the whole of Krulak's life. This is a helpful reminder that heroes are human, and the next one might well be from as humble beginnings, and live a life with traits and deeds both admirable and not. -originally published in The Kitchen Dispatch blog

Good biography of a great Marine.
A National treasure who was ignored by a foolish President Johnson.
