A cake is de rigeur for any American birthday celebration worthy of the name. Continuing her series of volumes pictorializing her sumptuous cakes, Peters brings her decorative skills to cakes designed specifically for birthday observances. And anyone receiving a cake like one of Peters' creations should be particularly grateful. Peters' skill with milled fondant overshadows that of most other professional bakers. She can carve fondant into tight, sharp geometries, or she can swirl it, fold it, and wave it into silken ruffles and curves that belie its solidity. Line drawings assist the cook in recreating these elegant pastries, but only professionals and those with some formal training in handling fondants and cake-decorating tools and techniques will readily pick up on Peters' barebones instructions. Recipes, too, reflect a professional's approach, measuring by weight rather than volume. Mark Knoblauch

Inspiration from the Best in Cakes
By C. Bennett
Colette Peters is a master of cake design and artistry. She shows us that baking can transcend the limits of the kitchen, and delve into the canvas and paints of the artist. It is no surprise to discover that Miss Peters is a trained artist. It is also not a surprise to discover that her work graces the tables of Bette Midler, the White House, and Tiffany's at Christmastime.
This brightly-colored book is arranged topically: Signs of the Zodiac (12 designs), Flowers of the Month (4 designs), Birthstones (3 designs), and Assorted Party Cakes (14 designs). There are also two chapters devoted to Basic Recipes and Basic Instructions. Miss Peters has thoughtfully included a list of Sources for equipment and supplies at the back of the book.
Each design includes: Number of Servings, List of Ingredients, paragraph-form instructions on how to assemble and decorate the cake, a full-color photograph, and patterns (most patterns require enlargements).
While the instructions are specific, and basic instructions at the back of the book are extensive, I would not consider this a book for the beginning cake decorator. More advanced and intermediate cake decorators will enjoy creating their own cakes based on these ideas. This is a wonderful gift for the aspiring cake decorator.

"Colette's Birthday Cakes" definitely worth the wait!
By Sara Mazzo
Last August I, along with people from across the U.S. and around the globe, had the pure pleasure of sitting in a class taught by Colette Peters during the 1999 I.C.E.S. Annual Convention (International Cake Exploration Society) held in Kansas City, Missouri. There she announced that her new book would be available in the Spring of 2000. Rest assured that this cake baker from Oklahoma was not alone in anticipating the arrival of this book. Whether you enjoy creating cakes for your friends and family or for paying customers, Colette's fresh new ideas will inspire you, no matter what your skill-level or experience may be. Her talents are obvious with each new cake and cleverly displayed through beautiful pictures. She has incorporated several well-known cake decorating techniques along with her own special touches to come up with original ideas sure to strike your fancy. The instructions that accompany each cake are consistantly clear and easy to follow. Be sure to add this one to your collection of cake decorating books.

Very creative!
By A Customer
I always enjoy looking at any of Colette's books. While I personally find several of the designs a bit over the top for my, and most of my bride's, tastes, her creativity is astounding! There are quite a few nice, more toned-down designs as well. The directions are very clear and detailed, unlike some other "celebrity" cake decorators who want to sell books, yet not give away any of their "secrets". Her cakes are interesting to look at, and great for coming up with new ideas, perfect for someone who is looking for something different. I'm always amazed by her creations!

Some beautiful cakes, some very bizarre.
By A Customer
Colette Peters is one of the country's most famous wedding cake designers and some of the cakes in this book show why. some of them are just plain silly!! As a cake designer myself, I use this book to show clients the range of cakes that are possible for them to have at their own wedding. Of course many of the cakes are too outlandish for a real bride to consider but the majority are beautifully designed, well photographed and explained step by step for an accurate reproduction. the recipes in the book are wonderful as well.

Grade 9 Up-"Yeah, I loved her. I couldn't help it. She was my brother." Regan has always been there for her transgender brother, Liam, sacrificing her needs for his, but when he announces that he is ready to "transition" into Luna permanently, Regan is not sure she can handle the consequences. She has been his confidant all her life, letting Luna dress in her room, buying underwear for her when Liam couldn't, and giving support. However, when the attractive new guy in chemistry class shows an interest in Regan, she wishes her sibling would just go away and give her a chance to live her own life. Liam realizes that in order for his sister to be free, he, too, must free himself to become the woman who lives inside him. Told from Regan's point of view in the present and in flashback, this novel breaks new ground in YA literature with a sensitive and poignant portrayal of a young man's determination to live his true identity and his family's struggle to accept Luna for who she really is.

Gr. 8-12. Peters tells two stories in this groundbreaking novel--one about Regan, and the other about Liam, Regan's transgender brother, who is the son his father expects by day but a young woman, Luna, by night. Fiercely protective of Liam/Luna, Regan has put her life on hold; she worries about her brother's female self being discovered and the family's reaction, and she fears that her brother may someday give in to despair. While Regan wonders if she will ever be able to have a life separate from the needs of her sibling, Liam seriously begins to consider a permanent change. Peters isn't putting forward a political agenda here. Rather, she's bringing the circumstances surrounding a difficult situation to light, and her sensitively drawn characters realistically encompass a wide range of reactions--from tentative acceptance by a best friend to Mom's feigned ignorance and Dad's total disbelief. The subject matter and occasional rough language will undoubtedly raise some eyebrows, but this book belongs in most YA collections. Cindy Welch

Probably my favourite Julie Anne Peters book yet...
By Claire Hennessy
This is a story dealing with a topic not often dealt with in YA fiction - transgender teenagers. Regan is fifteen and her life is dominated by her older brother, Liam (Lia Marie, and later Luna, at night). She has drifted apart from friends her own age because of him, and in order to try and help him she has offered to let him use her room at night, to try on girls' clothes. The only thing she has that's *hers* is her babysitting job for a family she sees as perfect and normal, in sharp contrast to her own, with her drugged-up mother and domineering father.

Regan is a sympathetic character, a girl who tries so hard to be there for her brother when he needs her, but also someone who resents how she has to be everything for him, his sole confidant, and who alternates between feeling sorry for him and for wishing that he could just be normal. She also has her own dilemma, involving an infatuation with a boy at school. "Luna" is Regan's story as much as it is Liam's.

Liam/Luna's story is dealt with effectively as well, with flashbacks of their childhood showing early signs that he really did want to be in a girl's body. The separation of gender and sexuality is also made quite clear, and the idea of constructed gender roles is also dealt with (though not as much as I'd like to have seen it discussed - but the perfect amount for a YA novel). It is by no means a definitive transgendered-teen story but it shouldn't have to be, either - it's merely the story of one girl in a boy's body, trying to break free.

A worthwhile read that will hopefully challenge readers' ideas towards gender and sex while telling a compelling story.

I had to buy this book for a class. I ended up needing to read this book in parts. I had to read along with the class. it turns out, I could not stop reading it! this was a book about a trangender boy that had his life together on the outside but was broken on the inside. it really reflects what families today and back then would be going through. it was such a great read.

A story that needs to be told
By A. M Nelson
Luna is the first young adult novel written about a transsexual teen. Luna/Liam is a girl that was born in a boy's body. The only one who knows the truth is Regan, Luna/Liam's younger sister. Regan has spent so much of her life protecting and worrying about Liam that she really hasn't developed and identity seperate from that role. She has no friends, and she is a loner and an outcast at her school. And she is frightened and freaked out when Luna begins to go public with her secret. Luna is well-written. The anguish and fear of the characters is palpable and real.

This book is so important because it is the first of its kind. I never really knew that much about transgender people before, and although I am a huge supporter of GLBT people, I did not understand transgenders, and I was uncomfortable about the subject. This book showed me that Liam/Luna was just as normal as any other person...they had just been born in the wrong body, and there is nothing freakish or weird about it. On the contrary, it was agonizing to read how desperate and hopeless Liam felt trapped in a body that was so horribly wrong for him. This book is groundbreaking, and needs to be read not just by young adults, but everyone who feels weird about the idea of a transsexual. They do not ask for this pain, they do not want to scare people. They just want what is in their hearts and minds to match their bodies.

Much thanks to Julie Ann Peters for tackling a very hard subject and presenting it with heart, dignity, and hope.

Why Sinatra Matters, by Pete Hamill

In this unique homage to an American icon, journalist and award-winning author Pete Hamill evokes the essence of Sinatra--examining his art and his legend from the inside, as only a friend of many years could do. Shaped by Prohibition, the Depression, and war, Francis Albert Sinatra became the troubadour of urban loneliness. With his songs, he enabled millions of others to tell their own stories, providing an entire generation with a sense of tradition and pride belonging distinctly to them.

From Publishers Weekly
Like a musical Elements of Style, Hamill's slim meditation on Frank Sinatra is confident, smart and seamless. Since (and immediately before) Sinatra's death in May 1998, countless tributes have been made to the singer; Hamill (A Drinking Life) seems to be writing to set the record straight, for he knew Sinatra and, before that, knew the singer's music. But Hamill doesn't fawn over Sinatra the way other, younger writers have recently done. Rather, he elegantly tells the Sinatra story, dwelling on the singer's best recordings, dismissing "the Rat Pack, the swagger, the arrogance, the growing fortune, the courtiers," because in the end, he writes, they are "of little relevance." What matters, according to Hamill, is the music, chiefly that of Sinatra's early mature years, when the singer released his celebrated albums on the Capitol label. Where a starry-eyed author might vaguely praise these albums for their pathos and vulnerability, Hamill points out that, before the singer's Capitol comeback years, Sinatra's fans were almost exclusively young women. The stubborn, post-Ava Gardner heartache of Sinatra's later records, however, with their lack of self-pity, gained Sinatra a chiefly male audience. Of this, perhaps the singer's greatest musical period, Hamill writes that Sinatra "perfected the role of the Tender Tough Guy.... Before him, that archetype did not exist in American popular culture." That may be true, but Hamill sets his book apart from the many others about Old Blue Eyes by tempering intelligent superlatives with the retelling of touching, revelatory moments the two men shared. Hamill's is a definitive introduction to Sinatra's work.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
The barrage of recent Frank Sinatra books has resulted in his being the most written-about celebrity in the world after Monroe and Presley. Hamill's slim essay is distinguished from other recent works by its objective focus on the components of the late singer's enduring musical legacy. Veteran writer Hamill (e.g., A Drinking Life, LJ 1/94) is comfortable in the New York City milieu of late nights, saloons, and prizefighters, and he has captured the essence of Sinatra, who created something that was not there before he arrived: an urban American voice. The book's strength is its insight into and evocation of the Italian American immigrant experience that had such a strong influence on Sinatra. Minor weaknesses are an oversimplified examination of prejudice and an underdeveloped 1974 vignette about Ava Gardner that fails to make its point. Recommended for public and academic libraries.?Bruce Henson, Georgia Inst. of Technology, Atlanta
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
A combination biography and cultural analysis by the author of A Drinking Life (1993). In Hamill's view, Frank Sinatra was important for two reasons. First, Sinatra represented the fulfillment of the American Dream. A first-generation Italian, young Sinatra experienced anti-immigrant biases firsthand. Yet for all its flaws, America still offered substantial opportunity, and by the time he was 15, Sinatra dreamed of singing professionally. Of course, he accomplished this and more, but throughout, Hamill asserts, Sinatra the superstar never forgot his humble roots. Second, Sinatra gave us a new sound, the "urban American voice." When Sinatra broke onto the scene in the early 1940s, the avuncular and soothing Bing Crosby was the singer. But Sinatra's songs were very different, edgier, more passionate, with a fair amount of swagger, yet always returning to what Hamill argues was Sinatra's central theme, loneliness. A heartfelt and intelligent tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes. Brian McCombie

There will never be another...
By JR Pinto
I only saw my hero, Frank Sinatra, perform once. It was at the end of his career - and his life. It was a strange evening; he was obviously at the end - he couldn't remember the words to his songs or read the teleprompter. Few people left however - the evening soon became about us - his fans - letting him know that we still loved him. "I LOVE YOU FRANK!" a huge, middle-aged, rough-looking man yelled out during a pause. Sinatra, taken aback by the violence of the outburst, chuckled and replied, "I love you too, pal." As Pete Hamill once pointed out, "Seeing Sinatra in ruins is like seeing the Coliseum in ruins - it's still magnificent."
Why Sinatra Matters is a must-read for any Sinatra-phile. In the Overture, Hamill cites Sinatra's death as the impetus for writing this book. He saw all these young reporters from MTV and VH1 doing stories on Sinatra (obviously prepared in advance) telling the world Sinatra was important, without really understanding why. It certainly wasn't just because he did it "his way."
This is a very short book. As Hamill points out it is not a "definitive biography" - although once he was in talks with Sinatra to write just that. It is, as the title plainly states, an explanation of why Sinatra matters - artistically and culturally - and why he always will. In terms of Culture, Hamill reminds the reader of a time when America felt it was morally obligated to persecute Italians - Sinatra helped change all that. Musically, the reasons are more complex. To put it succinctly, no one ever sounded like Sinatra before.
The book is great because it also sheds light on Sinatra the man, who is often lost in the obscurity of his own public image. He was not just some gruff tough guy - a kind of idiot savant who could churn out a great recording in one take. He was a fiercely intelligent, well-read, well-cultured, self-educated man who worked hard at his craft. The most enjoyable parts of the book are the conversations Hamill recounts between himself and Sinatra. Most shocking of all - to me at least - was to imagine Sinatra using the F-word!

A wonderful read--like an old song
By Robert Wellen
Pete Hamill, beyond a doubt, is an excellent writer. He does a wonderful job here. The book is part bio, part history of immigrants in America, and part memoir. It works on all levels. Hamill treats Frank with the respect he deserves. The book is not a gossipy memoir--Kitty Kelly fans should look elsewhere. Instead, he makes the important arguement that Sinatra gave voice to first, a generation, and then an entire country. His artisty is what matters. The myth of the man is fun and gets most the attention, but that is besides the point for Hamill. And he is right. We all talk about the "Sinatra in a hat" (as Hamill dubs him) and the Rat Pack--but the music endures. It is, argues Hamill, what matters in the Wee Small Hours of the Morning. It is what will stand the test of time and give voice to a thousand broken dreams, hearts, and help us--like Frank after the Fall--get back up and start all over again. Thanks, Pete Hamill for getting it right.

THE MOST LUCID, INTELLIGENT LOOK AT THE LEGEND
By A Customer
I am the eleventh of twelve kids. I am 42, and come out of Brooklyn. I have walked the streets of Hoboken. It reminds me of Bay Ridge, but the Statue of Liberty is facing the other way, and the Twin Towers are so big and close. My father had a bar in Brooklyn: a place that catered to the lonely: longshoreman who didn't want to go home for whatever reasons, older women who were jilted by the latest bum. They drank, a concordat of losers. In silence, they smoked unfiltered cigarettes and listened to that guy on the jukebox. The guy who really felt their pain, decades before it became some rank political joke. The voice was Frank Sinatra's, and he was my hero since I could walk. Pete Hamill, whom I've been reading for over twenty-five years, has the lapidary's eye, the poet's words, in his brilliant analysis of Sinatra the man, and what his essence really meant. Speaking of Sinatra after his death, Hamill writes: "Now Sinatra is gone, taking with him all his anger, cruelty, generosity, and personal style. The music remains. In times to come, that music will continue to matter, whatever happens to our evolving popular culture. The world of my grand-children will not listen to Sinatra in the way four generations of Americans have listened to him. But high art always survives. Long after his death, Charlie Parker still plays his version of the urban blues, Billie Hoilday still whispers her anguish. Mozart still erupts in joy.....In their ultimate triumph over the banality of death, such artists continue to matter. So will Frank Sinatra." This slim volume is the best thing I've read about Sinatra. Hamill hides no blemishes, and still gives us a totality of the man that no other biographer could. Alas, most great singers and writers now repose on the other side of the grass. We no longer have Sinatra in the flesh, yet, through his music, he will outlive everyone. And in the year 2067, a young adult will listen to the unparalleled majesty of his voice for the first time, and then go to the library to read WHY SINATRA MATTERS by Pete Hamill to make some sense of it all. Texas Reader

This book is typical Ogden Nash. Great light-hearted poetry, but with a message (usually). Especially if you're from New England, you'll enjoy the references to New York City. You should know, however, that this book was later published under the title "Candy is Dandy." Don't do what I did, and order both, thinking the content would be different.

Still apropo
By Patsy Crow King
Although Nash is considered first as a humorist, he is very perceptive at getting to the basis of the human foibles of his day, and in reading him in the present time, we find how little human nature has changed, and how funny it still is. As he aged, his poetry turned a bit darker. As I age I can identify with this.

Excellent Book
By Sporting
This book went into extremely great detail about John F. Kennedy's life. It focused not only on his Presidential years, but also the years leading up to his time in office. Even though this book is well written, at times it is particularly hard to follow because the events are not in chronological order. In addition to that, all of the events that this author writes about in this book happened at least forty years ago, making it nearly impossible with someone who was born well after JFK's time to understand what Mr. Manchester was talking about. While this book had some negtives, the positives definitely outweigh them. I really enjoyed this book because it showed John F. Kennedy as a person, not just a President. Plus, it was written before his assassination so the book was not clogged with the author's theories or guesses about why it happened. All in all, this book was exceptionally well written and was filled with useful and interesting information.

Manchester did a wonderful job with this book....
By Gerry
The first edition of this book arrives in the fall of 1962; this revised edition appears in 1967 in a post-assassination period of within a few years of the tragic event. Technically this book covers the period of time from April 1961 to April 1962; but it is a portrait work of words that encompasses a peripheral of events both leading up to and including the President Kennedy’s time in office. Exceptionally touching are the post-assassination Kennedy family activities that Mr. Manchester is careful to address by not divulging too much intimacy within; however, just enough for the reader to take somber notice of the loss that was felt for a very long time to come afterwards. This revised edition includes both the original and new inset (dated 1967) introduction with an epilogue dated of the same.

The work within is simply fascinating. Mr. Manchester takes special steps to maintain the dignity of the Kennedy family legacy by not referencing the “Ambassador’s” resignation from his post in London (November 1940) and other areas of potential embarrassment. The JFK Administration is still marked with mixed results to this day; in the era and generations that followed the untimely death of the President, emotions have referenced more than facts while he served in office. Mr. Manchester provides us one good reference of the so called “conservative” view point of the time in reference to President Kennedy – the quote came from Mr. Arthur Krock (aka “Dean of Washington Newsmen”) who was a longtime friend of the Kennedy Family. In the brief quote as referenced Mr. Krock stated that “…everything President Kennedy accused President Eisenhower of is now guilty of the same…” The quote was intended to reflect the many “gaps” that were campaign efforts during the run up to the 1960 election cycle. President Kennedy himself is quoted as saying “…the American Voter fails to see the issues clearly”; and, “…importance in the independent press to use voluntary restraint.”

There are many good reflections of this (then) young President and his family. We read and understand (for those of us outside of the Kennedy family) how the character of Joe Jr. and JFK rivaled one another during the formidable childhood years. We get a better understanding of the effort JFK laid forth in the 1946 election to run as a House Representative for a District in Massachusetts. We read of the energy he employed to become a US Senator, and gain an appreciation of the effort that was needed still to run for the highest office in the USA. Placing this book to the specific time frame (pre-assassination) it tells the story not only “well” but provides the reader with an insight to the Kennedy Family activities. President Kennedy is identical to President Eisenhower in that both despised being pigeon holed and labeled either “conservative” or “liberal”; President Kennedy considered himself to “responsible.” The comparisons as written in this book in 1962 of President Lincoln to President Kennedy (though short versed) are quite astounding knowing what we know today.

Since the untimely account of President Kennedy’s assassination there have been many events that have surfaced (“restraint” being removed from the independent press) about the Kennedy family. For some reason the American public has had a fascination with the misgivings and actions that have come to light – it could be argued that in a democracy the free speech over rides any boundary and when it came to the late 1960’s and 1970’s and beyond we have all read or heard of matters many Kennedy family members have done over the years.

The book is simply a terrific read – I would suggest that any person interested in reading this title read the “Revised Edition” and do this only after you have read “Death of a President.” It will make many more things in “Portrait of a President” personal and most human along the way.

One of JFK's favorite books about himself
By Ken H. Johnson
First published in the fall of 1962 this 1967 revised edition adds an introduction and epilogue which includes "a brief account of what life was like for the President's survivors." William Manchester met with JFK, family and friends and his first edition of "Portrait of a President" was a JFK favorite book about himself.

"Portrait of a President" focuses on the Presidential year April 1961 to April 1962 and in pursuit of portraiting the complex Kennedy, it also covers his prior life but not in chronilogical order.

There are a lot of excellent books on Kennedy benefiting from the passing of time and historical perspective so I rate this one a three, because I don't think it's one of the top few must reads.

Based on the Kennedy family's awareness of JFK's fondness for "Portrait of a President" they encouraged him to write an account of the assassination titled "The Death of a President".

"History in the Raw" -- In retrospect, a remarkable feat of extended journalism
By R. M. Peterson
This was a Christmas present and a much appreciated one. (It should be a great present for anyone interested in history and World War II.) It is a large (and heavy) volume reprinting many of the articles from The New York Times covering World War II. The book itself contains a selection of articles, some of which are abridged. That selection, which appears to have been a thoughtful one, was made by Richard Overy, and he also contributes about two dozen short, useful chapter introductions. There also is an accompanying CD-ROM that contains all of the coverage, unabridged.

The scope of the book is broad. It covers not just military events, but political and economic ones as well; not just the major fronts in Europe and the Pacific, but also less familiar ones in South America, the Middle East, and India; not just the international scene, but also the domestic one. And it is not cabined by the conventional dates for the beginning and end of World War II -- Sept. 1, 1939 through Aug. 14, 1945. The first article, dated June 25, 1919, reports on the Treaty of Versailles, which formally concluded World War I and laid foundation stones for World War II. The last article, dated Sept. 24, 1949, relays the news that the Soviet Union had detonated an atomic bomb.

It will be a rare person who reads THE NEW YORK TIMES COMPLETE WORLD WAR II from cover to cover, but it is ideal for browsing. To give potential purchasers an idea of the range of the book, here are some of the more unusual items that caught my eye:

* Aug. 16, 1932 -- "Hitler Dictatorship in Reich Held Unlikely" (one of The NYT's rare mistakes).

* Nov. 22, 1939 -- Mohandas Gandhi tells Great Britain that the resignation of eight of India's eleven provincial governments means that they would not participate in the war against the Axis unless they obtained in return "complete freedom" for India.

* July 23, 1940 -- Mohandas Gandhi "appealed to all Britons to cease hostilities with Germany and urged that they settle their differences with 'non-violent methods'."

* Jan. 2, 1941 -- British Acting Controller of the Press describes censorship as "the rationing of news" (no different than coffee and sugar).

* June 17, 1941 -- "Soviet-Nazi Deal Held More Likely Than Clash Despite All Rumors" (another NYT mistake, this one an article by Walter Duranty, who in retrospect seems to have been Stalin's shill).

* July 22, 1941 -- "'V' for Victory" symbol is credited as the brainchild of a Belgian, who was looking for a sign that would convey the same meaning in French, Flemish, and English.

* Dec. 4, 1941 -- "Singapore Doubts Japanese Threats" -- "Authorities here agree that the arrival of powerful British naval units, headed by the new battleship, Prince of Wales, yesterday raises the odds against Japan more than ever before."

* Jan. 27, 1942 -- Report on a Red Cross policy against accepting blood from Negro donors for war purposes.

* June 1, 1942 -- "Cologne 'Inferno'" -- "Seven-eighths of Cologne, a city the size of Boston, was in flames, an inferno 'almost too gigantic to be real,' * * * pilots who took part in it said tonight. 'When we got there, I almost felt like leaving and trying to find another target.' * * * 'Cologne was just a sea of flames.'" "Their reports were typical of the thousands being sifted tonight and compiled into a record of the mightiest piece of destruction ever devised by man."

* Nov. 25, 1942 -- "Himmler Program Kills Polish Jews: Slaughter of 250,000 in Plan To Wipe Out Half in Country This Year Is Reported"

* Feb. 2, 1943 -- Report that in the New York area teen-age girls picked up by servicemen outnumber professional prostitutes by a ratio of four to one as spreaders of venereal diseases among American military personnel.

* Aug. 8, 1943 -- Article on riots in Harlem, leaving five dead, 500 injured, 500 arrested, and an estimated $85,000,000 in property damage.

* July 3, 1944 -- "Inquiry Confirms Nazi Death Camps: 1,715,000 Jews Said to Have Been Put to Death By the Germans".

* April 2, 1945 -- Report that Allies decide that enemy governmental leaders would not be immune from prosecution for war crimes.

* Sept. 22, 1945 -- "Indo-China Fights Return of French" (The area is referred to as "Indo-China"; "Viet Nam" is identified as "the Indo-Chinese resistance movement", which "already has set up a government in Hanoi".)

My copy of THE NEW YORK TIMES COMPLETE WORLD WAR II is missing pages 317-32, and in their stead it has an extra set of pages 333-40. That snafu explains the four-star Amazon rating.

Excellent reference.
By Keskasay
Recent writers have access to information that wasn't available during WWII and a lot of the information in this book/DVD combination is best explained in the newer books. However this tells it like it was in the war years. The news was either in print by reporters on the scene or on the radio as with the Edward R. Murrow broadcasts from London. The DVD is an electronic version of the book and for writers or students to have it in the computer for reference saves a lot of search time.

The War from Start to Finish.
By Amazon Customer
This book contains a day by day record of not only WW11 battles, but the key personalities involved in the conflict. Clearly there was great disagreement within these united states, regarding our position on entering the war. Some texts give one the impression that our entrance was just the japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. However the european conflict clearly gave President Roosevelt a greater cause for alarm than did the japanese empire. The news articles show the progress of the conflict, but these articles also show the evolving thought on the war in this country. Slowly but surely isolationism gave way to engagement, and engagement led to action. These newspaper reports chart the war for the public, but they also charted the conflict for history. I definitely recommend this book, to anyone interested in WW11. JRV

Intriguing!
By Alicia
This book had elements that were good, but again, it felt just like a setup to something bigger. In this case, it’s obvious. (It’s in the title of the next book. No spoilers here.) All the same, I liked it. (But really. All four of these books have felt like setups for some big plot. There are parts that definitely hint at it, and this book has the biggest reveal yet, but no real action so far.)

In any case, the journey to Vampire Mountain is dangerous, but a few notable things happen. Darren makes friends with wolves. I loved this especially because Darren really cares about the wolves and animals in general. You can tell. He’s reluctant to leave them. He even goes after a bear to protect a wolf cub. It’s crazy. Bears are dangerous, man. But I liked what they added to the story.

One of my favorite parts was with one of the Little People sent to escort them by Mr. Tiny. We learn a whole lot more about them. Again, no spoilers, but I love it. They’re fascinating.

Vampire Mountain is pretty cool in its own way. Vampires are a bit stuffy and prefer to be primitive and stick to tradition, but they still have a pretty cool way of life. Wouldn’t fancy it myself, but it’s fun to read about. We also meet a lot of new people.

Then of course there’s the big reveal that makes it pretty clear what the main plot is going to be of the next several books (if not all of them). We don’t get many answers or much information, but it’s intriguing enough. And then Darren has his own quest to fulfill first. I look forward to reading about that next.

Good read but frustrating ending…
By Paul D
So great story, the plot is building, it’s really starting to get good and then, TO BE CONTINUED…

Really? The book is only 212 pages long! I get that the author is writing these for a young audience but we can sit and read a book that’s longer than 200 pages. The Harry Potter series should have proven that. If you’re going to publish a book then make it a complete story for crying out loud. Right now I just feel cheated. If the rest of the series ends up being the same, not sure I’m willing to invest my time in it.

The Mythology Comes Out
By Amazon Customer
The four entry in the Darren Shan series proves to be the most interesting yet the least-action packed of any of the previous novels. Upon reading the first four books in the series it is easy to see why Universal Pictures* has decided to adapt the 12 books into 4 separate movies (each movie chronologically focuses on a book trilogy). The books are interesting, easy to read, and not too childish (as one might perceive from the large font and short page count) - but at the same time they do take a lot of time for things to really start going. It wasn't until the fourth book that any of the mythology has started to come into the play.

The first three novels can easily be summarized as Darren Shan's introduction into the world of Vampire's and later a particular ensemble of creaturesFun. They can easily been seen as a collective story (as they deal with Darren's destruction of his human-life to his naïve acceptance of his vampire life) but they also each have their own distinct manner.

The fourth book is a bit of a departure for that. It seems that the author, now confident with his series and armed with an established world, has finally set out to tell the story he has been itching to get to. The book takes place approximately 8 years after the events of the third book and equally works as a sequel, while keeping a distinct distance from the series epilogue. In this novel the author has confidence in his story and his characters enough to finally delve into his vampire mythology and lore - something he seemed unwilling to do in previous novels.

But this becomes a double edged sword for the novel: it brings the reader to a whole new level within the `Cirque du Freak' world - but so much time is spent in the novel telling the back story that the book suffers from a lack of a plot. There is a beginning and a middle but no real end. There is no climax. There is character growth (a lot of it), but this particular installment finished unfulfilled because the reader is left with more confusion than anything else.

If the reader can get beyond the books lack in plot (this book seems to set the tone that the remainder of the series will stray from self-contained stories into overlapping arc-like structures) they are rewarded with a very rich history, some particularly interesting (both psychologically, biologically and even in view of popular culture) liberties with the vampire. The character's of "Harkart" and the various vampire supporting-cast as well as the mysterious Mr. Tiny are all developed well beyond anything seen in the previous novels. For the first time as a reader I looked beyond the obvious peril and emotion in the book and starting to really care for the characters. Because I have spent more time with them, because they are more fleshed-out, and because his book easily hints at some pretty amazing storytelling in future books.
