About the Author
Jim Thompson was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma. He began writing fiction at a very young age, selling his first story to True Detectivewhen he was only fourteen. Thompson eventually wrote twenty-nine novels, all but three of which were published as paperback originals. Thompson also co-wrote two screenplays (for the Stanley Kubrick films The Killing and Paths of Glory). Several of his novels have been filmed by American and French directors, resulting in classic noir including The Killer Inside Me (1952), After Dark My Sweet(1955), and The Grifters (1963).

Thompson before the crime

Now, for those who haven't read Jim Thompson's first novel, Now and Earth, don't go in expecting another crime story. It's not Noir or pulp in the least, it's a real piece of personal autobiographical literature. This is where I started in the Jim Thompson cannon and because of it, I'll pursue the rest.
First, I'd like to say that the book has a great title; that's pretty common for Thompson's books. It gets your attention; definitely got mine anyway. From reading this book, I wondered what direction Thompson's career would have taken if it were more successful when it had originally come out. Would he have written the crime novels or the majority of them? Probably not. I can't really say, but it interested me. It's sad that he didn't receive the showers of praise and rave-reviews that most superstar best-selling authors get. I think he started writing crime, out of necessity, because it sold. Apparently, only after death was he something of a literary superstar or at least a hero to many aspiring writers. Many people eventually found his books and they left an impact that's been lasting.
The worst that I can say about Now and on Earth is that it has a few slow moments dealing with detail. It's perhaps too detailed at times. But overall the text is never boring and it's very nuanced without being flowery. It's characters are real and many of it's situations are ones we've been through many times. It details the struggles of family amazingly well. It's clear Thompson understood very well what he wrote about. For his first novel, I was glad to see how mature Thompson's voice was as a writer. It leaves no doubt that he'll take you to more interesting places.
It's a great book; I really enjoyed it. If you have not read it and are a fan of Thompson's; read it. If you have been looking for a book to get into Thompson's work, give it a shot. It may not be much like his other work, but on it's own it's excellent and well worth your time.
