What a fabulous book! A great resource!

What a fabulous book! It appealed to the dancer in me at once. I bought it on a whim, even though I was afraid of getting just another superficial treatment of swing. Pener proved me wrong; this book is killer-diller! I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of research Pener did for the book; any history major (which I am) would be proud of this one. Well-written, well-researched, with tons of addresses, web sites, and CD recommendations, this book is a gem. I thought knew quite a bit about the history and development of swing--I was wrong. A great resource for dancers who want to learn more swing history, culture and fashions. Every dancer, music historian, and swing lover should own this book!

As fast and fun as the music itself, and with real substance

More than just a valentine to swing, THE SWING BOOK is highly informative and entertaining. It really all is in here, in a fast and fun way with so many original interviews. Some real research and reporting went into this book, and it shows. Pener does a great job tracing the history of swing back in the day, and the social history of its recent comeback, with great quotes from the people who made it happen. All the experts weigh in, on dancing, on fashion, on tracking down the perfect find (whether it's a full suit or outfit, a small accessory, or the right album with the right performance of the right song), and on the history and artists both then and now. Makes you want to get out there and dance, or at least run to your record store.

Good introduction...

but nothing more. I would recommend it if you are interested in the history of swing (particularly the music) and want a guide to swing musicians. Do not expect to learn to swing dance from this book. The lindy hop chapter is like like a glossary of swing dance terms.
Overall, it is well written and and provides a good introduction but it is too general and its focus can be too brief at times. It doesn't contain anything you couldn't learn from going to a swing dance or using a search engine.

About the Author
Jim Thompson was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma. He began writing fiction at a very young age, selling his first story to True Detectivewhen he was only fourteen. Thompson eventually wrote twenty-nine novels, all but three of which were published as paperback originals. Thompson also co-wrote two screenplays (for the Stanley Kubrick films The Killing and Paths of Glory). Several of his novels have been filmed by American and French directors, resulting in classic noir including The Killer Inside Me (1952), After Dark My Sweet(1955), and The Grifters (1963).

Vintage Jim Thompson

Jim Thompson has a well-deserved reputation as one of the greatest of all the pulp writers. He wrote thirty novels in the late 1940’s and the 1950’s, including The Killer Inside Me, Savage Night, Hell of A Woman, The Getaway, and The Grifters. The Getaway was a huge box office hit in 1972 starring Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw. Its 1994 remake was also a hit, starring Baldwin and Basinger. The Grifters also became a big hit in the movies in 1990, produced by Scorsese and starring Cusack, Huston, and Bening. Donald Westlake wrote the screenplay.

But watching a movie based on one of Thompson’s books is not the same as reading the original material. Although hundreds of writers have tried to ape his style, there was only one Jim Thompson. His tales are sordid. They are filled with psychopaths and grifters. His heroes are anti-heroes. They are not just criminals, but often mean, violent, sadistic men. Also, his books are filled with a sardonic sense of humor that often leaves the reader laughing out loud.

Savage Night is a tale about a pint-sized contract killer who has been brought out of Arizona retirement to do one last job for “the Man” and Thompson never gives “the Man” a name. He is just a shadowy figure, representing mobster chieftains. It begins with “Little Biggers” arriving in New York after “three days of babes and booze while [he] waited to see the Man.” He then takes the railroad out to some poh-dunk dead-end town called Peardale where Jake Hinson is living – Jake Winroy who is about to testify at a trial that will bring down the gambling interests in the city. He explains that the farther he got into Peardale, the less he liked it. “The whole place had a kind of decayed, dying-on-the-vine appearance.” It was ninety-five miles from the city and nothing there but a small teacher’s college. “There was something sad about it, something that reminded [him] of bald-headed men who comb their side hair across the top.”

Because he looked young for his age, Biggers is to enroll at the college and take a room in the Winroy house and wait for his instructions to off Winroy. He uses the name Carl Bigelow since it is close enough to his real name- Charles Bigger- that he can remember it. Bigger is an odd hero for a book- he is short. He wears elevator shoes. He has false teeth and is barely healthy enough to get around without losing his lunch.

When he gets to the Winroy house, he notes the brown grass and the paint-peeled fence, but then his eyes came up and looked across the street and saw Fay, Jake’s wife, who had a reputation as quite a “stepper.” “She had one of those husky well-bred voices.” “One look at that frame of hers, and you knew the kind of breeding she’d had: straight out of Beautyrest by box-springs. One look at her eyes, and you knew she could call you more dirty words than you’d find in a mile of privies.”

But Biggers knows what she is. And, he ain’t falling for her. As he pulls her by the hair up out of the tub, “She stood there on the bathmat, fighting with everything she had to fight with - - offering it all to me. And she saw it wasn’t enough. She knew it before I knew it myself.” And, after that scene, he’d broken the ice but good and she knew who he was now if she hadn’t had a damned good idea before and she knew why he was in Peardale and it was okay with her. “She was stacked. She was pretty. She was just about everything you could want in a woman – as long as you were on top or you looked like you might be on top.”

In the hands of a lesser author, this book would be slow as Biggers bides his time until he does the hit, but Thompson fills that time up with an odd assortment of characters, including a one-legged girl who Biggers takes advantage of, the calculating femme fatale of Fay, the old peculiar bakery manager who must be in on the deal to act so queer (Mr. Kendall), and the sheriff who won’t let up on Biggers. The time is filled with exploiting cripples, plotting to kill his landlord, putting out matches on a woman’s chest, sticking knives in his associates’ necks, and other beastly acts. All the while, Biggers puts on an act as if he were the prince of innocence himself.

One of the oddest episodes is his dalliance with Ruthie, she of he one-legged fame. When she arrived, one good look is all he got, but what he saw interested him. “Maybe it wouldn’t interest you, but it did me.” She had on “an old muckledung-colored coat – the way it was screaming Sears-Roebuck they should have paid her to wear it.” He observes that “the swinging around on that crutch hadn’t done her rear end any harm. If you saw it by itself, you might have thought it belonged to a Shetland pony.”

The ending is Thompson-esque in its strangeness and uniqueness as blood and mental illness take over. This is prototypical nihilism and is found throughout the book such as a scene where Biggers is angry and elbows through a crowd getting on a subway car, noting he had elbowed a woman holding a baby good and wondering if the baby would be better off under the wheels of the train than going through the crap of life.

This is vintage Thompson and it is noir like nothing else you have ever read. Enjoy.

Best of Thompson's Pulp Fiction, Guaranteed!

Thompson's best yet. What a trip! I've read most of his "Pulp Fiction", and Savage Night beats them all. With a 5 foot tall womanizing hit man who for some strange reason the ladies all want, and a sexy lady with a baby foot, this one has it all. Violent, sexy, perverted, and fun! You won't believe the end, and as usual the atmosphere and story line is the best in noir.

Even the biggest Jim Thompson fans will say his novels are uneven. At the high end, I'm into The Killer Inside Me, Pop. 1280, and The Getaway.
I began Savage Night and took the ride right along with the narrator. After a fine reading experience, I put this title up there with his top-notch work.
If, like myself you're into Thompson but have inexplicably never looked into Savage Night, I can nearly guarantee you'll enjoy this work.

In this book, Rowan, the first black Cabinet officer, and a syndicated columnist, warns that unless we act now, this country will by the end of the millennium have the same level of bloody racial strife that marked South Africa at the height of apartheid. The warning signs he cites include corporate downsizing, the rise of the angry white male, the growth of right wing militias, the war on welfare and affirmative action, the swelling black prison population and the growing popularity of Louis Farrakhan. In his chapter "How to Prevent 'Armageddon,'" Rowan recommends a massive federally enforced disarmament program, speedy prosecution of racist cops, and early and massive interventions into the lives of underclass children -- including a revival of FDR's Civilian Conservation Corps, to be paid for by the money now being earmarked for new prisons.

Despite the incendiary title, this book seems mainly a recap of syndicated columnist Rowan's opinions on recent political controversies regarding race, from affirmative action to the rise of Colin Powell to the O.J. Simpson trial. It's hard to tell how much Rowan believes his title: while he doesn't consider race war unavoidable, he says he's not optimistic. Then again, the indices of societal decline Rowan cites?less religious observance, economic malaise, divisive arguments over affirmative action?have provoked other Cassandras but few who predict racial violence. His views are liberal but not radical: critical of Republican administrations but also harsh toward Louis Farrakhan and other hatemongers. He sometimes seems to be settling scores, as when he calls Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen an "enemy of black people" for making a defensible argument that "it's time to limit" affirmative action. Rowan inflates his first-person narrative by quoting his own columns frequently, as if suggesting that he is at the center of these debates. He does perform a service in emphasizing the need to take right-wing militias seriously; his other recommendations include intensified gun control, greater monitoring of the police, intervention in the lives of the underclass, a revival of public works for the poor and alternatives to prison.

The Long Island Railroad shootings by Colin Ferguson, the rise of terrorist white militias, and the clamor to eliminate affirmative action and welfare "as we know it" are the opening salvos in the coming race war, according to Rowan. A nationally syndicated columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, Rowan believes that these clashes will take place in a society where organized religion and marriage are no longer important, where economic injustice is the order of the day, and where racism has eliminated the sense of a community of shared values. Rowan shines in his discussion of affirmative action, crime, and poverty. But he occasionally descends into diatribe and relies too heavily on his own newspaper columns. There won't be any surprises here for those who have read Rowan before. A Waste Of Time

The opening lines of Carl Rowen's book state that the United States is "on the rocks spiritually, morally, racially and economically." The author goes on to smash everyone he deems responsible for this and the plight of the black man today.
I found this book very harsh and full of thoughts and ideas that, to me, seem very rash and extreme. Although he does quip that Farrakhan, Sharpton and Jackson are part of the problems blacks now face he reserves his harshest criticism for whites. Whites in power and white men in gerneral. He launches scathing attacks on former President's Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush. Be blasts Pat Buchannon and Oliver North. He calls G. Gordon Liddy a "troglodyte". He says Newt Gingrich is full of "self righteous hypocrisy". He accuses the federal court system of having "surrendered to racist mob psychology" for rulling against affirmative action in University's.
The author also makes the statement that blacks do commit a disproportionate number of the violent crimes in America. Most of the crimes committed by blacks are committed against blacks. He then goes on to talk about the fact that over 50% of prisoners in the penal system are black and that shows we still live in a racist society. I don't follow the logic. If more blacks are committing violent crimes, wouldn't it follow that more blacks would be in jail? I don't see how that is racist.
He points to Susan Smith who killed her children by drowning them in the car by driving into a lake. Her initial police report said that a black man had hijacked her Mazda and driven off with her two young sons in it. He points to the fact that these incidents add to racial polarization and hatred and are bitter reminders of the stereotyping of all black males as potential kidnappers, rapists and killers and warps the minds of white people. I don't know Susan Smith but obviously she is not a typical well thinking person. And I don't think her statement went toward warping any white folks minds. If you would approach the average person on the street they would probably remember the case. How many of them, do you think, would remember the initial report accusing an unidentified black man? The percentage would be very very small I am sure.
He tries to defend inner city cime in a way. First, when Jesse Jackson stated "There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then to look around and see somebody white and feel relieved." While I would not agree with this statement and the author obviously does not I would not say that Jackson surely must have been embarrassed by his statement, as the author did. Maybe Jackson truly feels this way, why would he be embarrassed? And why would the author of this book feel he can speak on another person feelings? The aurthor says that the poor black teenagers do covet the $150 sneakers and the $400 boom box but when they lack any honorable recourse to get it, who's surprised that blacks maim and murder for big bucks? Is the author serious here? Is he defending murdering someone if you can't afford what you want? Is he not adding to the black sterotype himself with statements like these?
With in the pages of this book the author continually tells me that he knows, as a black man, how white men feel. How could he? Just as I'm sure he would agree no white men can truly understand many of the feelings of black men in society. For instance he states on page 104, "I know how painful it is for a white man to get a female supervisor, and how a 'twofer' - a black woman boss - puts a strain on his manhood." What is he talking about? Why is it painful for a white man to have a women boss, of any color? Who is he to speak for me? I have a women boss and it is not a strain on my manhood. Is it different if a black man has a white woman boss? He certainly did not address this situation at all.
In my opinion the author is constantly trashing the white male and defending the black race without looking objectively. I believe that this book serves no purpose except to fan the flames of racism. From all sides. Don't waste your money on this one.

Rowan's latest: unrelenting Politically Correct supremacy

I am very grateful that I didn't purchase this book. There is far less substance here than I ever anticipated. The thesis is not very complicated at all (surprise, surprise). In a nutshell, "We must stop the (white) racist boogieman ... or else." One cannot help but be nauseated at Mr. Rowan's constant use of racial and political pejoratives to discredit those who he happens to disagree with. For example, he refers to knowledge of mean American 15 point B/W IQ difference as "Caucasian madness" and "racist propaganda." The Pioneer Fund which simply explores the role of heredity vs. environment (see their web page) is a "Neo-Nazi" outfit bent on proving "white supremacy" with "psuedoscience." The Bell Curve is smeared "Bell Bull" and Charles Murray is a "Neo-Nazi" (of course, Mr. Murray is a politically correct libertarian and the co-author, Richard Bernstein -- now deceased -- is Jewish). What Rowan communicates with striking consistency in this work is intense fear -- fear of all the usual bad guys -- "angry white males", militia members, "white supremacists", "Nazis", Ku Kluxers, and so forth. Like much of the refuse that makes it onto the shelves in bookstores, there is no confusion about who the good guys are (non-whites, homosexuals, lesbians, Third World immigrants, feminists, Jews, HIV-positive people, liberals, Communists, gang memebers, etc.) and who the bad guys are (conservatives, middle class tax protestors, gun owners, angry white men, militia members, white activists, etc.). Of course, "angry white males" have little to be angry about. After getting by with little more than their whiteness for thousands of years, they now have to prove themselves to get ahead, say Rowan and his clique. Mr. Rowan doesn't debate his opponents -- nor does he even make a meager attempt to present their arguments. He simply calls them harsh and emotion-laden terms. Since he is black (and liberal), any attempt to draw attention to these shortcomings is quickly (and predictably) denounced as "racist." Of course, one could imagine Mr. Rowan's reaction if a well-known white commentator refered to the belief in the absolute intellectual racial equality as "Negroid madness" and smeared prominent blacks as "Neo-Communists" and "black supremacists" regardless of how fitting the label. If one recalls, two summers ago Mr. Rowan was the one who set the fires of racial hatred blaring in this country with his theory of a "church burning conspiracy" implicating "white racists." Having read The Turner Diaries, Mr. Rowan was convinced that the church burnings were the result of rabid white supremacists trying to start a race war in a "perverse attempt" to "save the white race." In short, The Coming Race War is not a credible work. If you're looking for another widely- distributed piece of anti-white propaganda that pins the cause of all America's problems squarely on marginal white activist groups, then this book is for you. If you're looking for substance, analysis, honesty, and the fair, balance, and accurate presentation of facts, I would recommend going elsewhere -- such as Wilmot Robertson's The Dispossesed Majority or Jared Taylor's Paved with Good Intentions.

The Late Mr. Rowan got it wrong

Mr. Rowan was right about one thing. There is a race war coming.

But he was 200% wrong about the causes for it. He simply didn't get it. He was blinded by being black in America. Not because of the color of his skin or his ancestry, but rather what we tell blacks (and other minorities) in America: You are not really Americans.

The race war is coming, but it is a creation of the political and cultural left.

What the left has done, including Mr. Rowan, has trained with great effort and expense, as many minorities as will listen to: #1 Not consider themselves American and to distance themselves from American culture as much as possible, embracing other cultures whenever possible. and #2 Once culturally segregated: resent and hate America from "the outside" even while they live inside America's borders.

The political left has used this "divide and conquer" method to hold political power. If racial minorities considered themselves Americans above all else, they would vote for conservatives far more often. By training minorities to retain or adopt a foreign cultural identity, the left can then pidegon hole people in groups, and secure their block votes on the basis of racial identity. Far from color blind, almost every black that voted in the last presidential election voted for Obama, their race statistically welded to their vote (while whites voted pretty much as they always do, statistically disconnected from the race of the candidate).

In other words, the tactics of racial separatism works well for the left. If making you into a hyphenated-American will get them your vote, then they will stick with it to the end.

But this separate army of voters, that never seem to find satisfaction in life no matter how many generations of democrats are successfully elected to office, have the potential to turn hard against the entire nation.

The Race War will be ignighted by Hollywood, the media wing for the political left. Stoking hatred of America for decades, and promoting racial hostilities by stereotyping minorities and America as opposing forces, hostilities will grow, and at some point, violence will begin in an overt fashion.

Mr. Rowan was wrong about who would be starting it... who the organized violent elements would be. It will be the illegal Mexican population. The left has promoted illegal entry of Mexican nationals for generations. They steadfastly refuse to cause an orderly immigration process to take hold. Those here illegally see themselves on the outside from day 1, living in a situation of fear that they have created for themselves by disrespecting process and law. Instead of taking responsibility, people tend to justify their actions, and these illegals have fear that they turn into resentment, hating to have to live with fear of being caught in their misdeeds. Hating the avenues that are closed to them as an underground population. Hate. Lots of it. Growing with each passing day. The cultural left teaches these illegals to hate America. Their chileren are taught to hate America every day in tax payer funded schools. They are taught to hate America with every news story that can be spun against her.

Eventually, they learn to blame America for everything... the fear they have in just being here illegally, the difficulties they face (regardless of how much better things are for them then back home). Their pride lost to the welfare they receive, the anger simply grows, and the necessity to justify the entire sad process is to convince themselves that the world is backward. That US soil is really theirs, and that Americans are the illegals.

This new equation is the basis for war. A massive Mexican army, formed within the borders of America, sees America as an intruder in their lives... hated and resented even though it sustains them far better than Mexico ever did.

And Hollywood loves blood... and will actively seek to inflame this false anger into action. Bloody, violent action, in the way that only Hollywood can.

The rest of America, having no intention of going anywhere, will have to make a choice, and the choice will be simple. Hate back, and fight with deadly force.

Mr. Rowan's focus on Christians and militia groups (while failing to notice the war machine of the left and hollywood) simply misses the entire story.

Our failure to have an orderly immigration process that seeks to absorb and transform new citizens into America as patriotic supporters of this great nation (a failure which the cultural right has promoted) will lead to bloodshed in the southwest... and if the left is successful, they will try to pull all other minorities into the fight.

Like the citizens that have destroyed DC, Detroit, and other cities, this cancer will become a nation wide problem.

Multiculturalism IS the problem. The solution is simple: One nation. One People. One culture. Unity. This has been the successful model up until multiculturalism took hold, fracturing and splintering the popluation into self-loathing hyphenated psudo-Americans.

There are no patriots on the left. None who would die for America, because on the left, America is not their country. Their country is sub Saharan Africa, or Mexico, or anyplace else.

Like people living in a rented apartment, it's not about taking care of the home... it is about using it, and letting the decay be the landlords problem.

Having tracked a horror-movie-stereotype vampire in their previous adventure, Darren and his master, Larten Crepsley, take another hiatus from the bizarre circus of the series title to make a pilgrimage to the Halls of Vampire Mountain to meet with the generals and princes in charge. The peregrinators are accompanied by a pair of ugly, speechless Little People who carry an ominous message for the council from their "old as time itself" master, Mr. Tiny. The road is perilous, of course, and getting to their destination is only half of the problem. Darren's biggest challenge, following a run-in with a crazed grizzly bear and a foolhardy confrontation with a rare, Xena-like vampiress, comes in defending his maker, the one who inexplicably violated the proscription against blooding a child. While the previous trio of "Cirque du Freak" books could each relatively stand alone, this fourth entry marks a definite transition, a critical segue into adventures to come that will revolve around Mr. Tiny's foreboding and Darren's impending Trials of Initiation (book nine is already in the works in the U.K.). The Mythology Comes Out

The four entry in the Darren Shan series proves to be the most interesting yet the least-action packed of any of the previous novels. Upon reading the first four books in the series it is easy to see why Universal Pictures* has decided to adapt the 12 books into 4 separate movies (each movie chronologically focuses on a book trilogy). The books are interesting, easy to read, and not too childish (as one might perceive from the large font and short page count) - but at the same time they do take a lot of time for things to really start going. It wasn't until the fourth book that any of the mythology has started to come into the play.

The first three novels can easily be summarized as Darren Shan's introduction into the world of Vampire's and later a particular ensemble of creaturesFun. They can easily been seen as a collective story (as they deal with Darren's destruction of his human-life to his naïve acceptance of his vampire life) but they also each have their own distinct manner.

The fourth book is a bit of a departure for that. It seems that the author, now confident with his series and armed with an established world, has finally set out to tell the story he has been itching to get to. The book takes place approximately 8 years after the events of the third book and equally works as a sequel, while keeping a distinct distance from the series epilogue. In this novel the author has confidence in his story and his characters enough to finally delve into his vampire mythology and lore - something he seemed unwilling to do in previous novels.

But this becomes a double edged sword for the novel: it brings the reader to a whole new level within the `Cirque du Freak' world - but so much time is spent in the novel telling the back story that the book suffers from a lack of a plot. There is a beginning and a middle but no real end. There is no climax. There is character growth (a lot of it), but this particular installment finished unfulfilled because the reader is left with more confusion than anything else.

If the reader can get beyond the books lack in plot (this book seems to set the tone that the remainder of the series will stray from self-contained stories into overlapping arc-like structures) they are rewarded with a very rich history, some particularly interesting (both psychologically, biologically and even in view of popular culture) liberties with the vampire. The character's of "Harkart" and the various vampire supporting-cast as well as the mysterious Mr. Tiny are all developed well beyond anything seen in the previous novels. For the first time as a reader I looked beyond the obvious peril and emotion in the book and starting to really care for the characters. Because I have spent more time with them, because they are more fleshed-out, and because his book easily hints at some pretty amazing storytelling in future books.

About the Book:
Six years later (eight years since the initial change), we return to Darren Shan's adventure. This time Crepsley plans on bringing Darren before the Council to see what verdict will be placed due to a child being blooded. Before that though, they have to worry about making their way up the snowy mountain with no help but their own skin (and barefoot). Along the way will prove dangerous, of course, as they run into rabid bears, wolves, and even vampenze!

Review:
Research! As a writer, you need to do research! Shan has been notorious for having flaws in this series so far (for example, in The Vampire's Assistant, Shan describes Evra's snake as slimy). Although this bothered me before, it was always simply a sentence here or there. Yes, it was jarring and brought me out of the story. It caused my suspension of disbelief to snap, and I found it so much worse in this book because it was staring me in the face for a good quarter of it. It was because of this that I actually rated this book three stars instead of four. The issue I have with Shan's lack of research was that a simple Google search could have provided the answer. So what bugged me so much in this book? While trekking to Vampire Mountain, Darren a pack of wolves. First off, they tended to act more like dogs than wolves, such as the male rolling on his back to get his belly rubbed. Granted, wolves and vampires are supposed to get along extremely well in this world. Even though this bugged me, if it was the only issue, I might have been able to ignore it. However, Shan was also constantly calling the wolf pup a cub, and at one point the pup actually manages to climb a tree, but the attacking bear cannot. I'm sorry, but even children know it's a wolf pup and that wolves don't climb trees. I can understand not getting everything right, but these are facts that even kids know.

Other than the obvious lack of research, I found myself enjoying the book. Even though some of the things seemed odd to me (like bat broth), I really appreciated that Shan's vampires are not your typical vampires. We learned early in the series that Shan's vampires actually age, but in Vampire Mountain, we learn more about them as a group. Instead of your typical aristocratic type, Shan's vampires are more "masculine." They are constantly having physical challenges, and their highest leaders are apt to be quite brawny. Shan's vampires actually reminds me of barbarians of sorts, and even though their ways had a familiar feel about them, it was interesting to view their traditions (even if I didn't always agree with them).

Shan also managed to hit me with a good amount of surprises throughout this tale, such as when one of the Little People started talking or when you learn what they are. Shan also continues to let Darren make mistakes and be flawed, which I always appreciate, and Shan's fast paced writing and story telling keeps me more (especially with the cliff hanger he leaves us on). Cirque du Freak is definitely getting more interesting as the story unfolds. It really is a tale of its own caliber, an original piece. I just hope that the rest of the series isn't so poor in its facts so that it can be even more enjoyable and more believable.

This book may not live up to some people expectations after the first three instalments of "the saga of Darren shan", Being from England i have read this book (and all the saga up to book 8...) and, although most people would admit that this ks not exactly a high point for the serise, it is still a good book in its own right, and set up the next two books in the "vimpire mountain" trilogy very well, introduseing new idea and people who will become vital to how the saga pans out. If you read this book over I'm sure you will be surprised that it is not half as bad as you remember! A word of warning however... if you feel this book ends on a cliffhanger, you will not BELIVE the ending to book 5 (trials of death)! it will be a long hard wait between that and book 6 9The vampire prince.) belive me!

Introduction

People have been telling fortunes since time began. You have the power within you to see your own future, or that of your friends, no matter what your age or circumstance.

The ancient art of divination is a vast subject, too large to be covered in its entirety here. This little book shows you simply how to develop your psychic and clairvoyant abilities, and to invoke them to tell fortunes using every-day household items such as tea leaves or coffee grounds, a pack of playing cards, a pair of dice, a bowl of water or ice, candles or apples. Most likely you already have the ingredients at hand, and because each method is easy to use, you can begin any time you like. Also included here are everyday omens and superstitions that have stood the test of time.

Once your mind is receptive to higher influences, you will find there is far more to life than just what meets the eye. You've probably already had the experience of knowing who is on the telephone before you pick it up to answer. Or perhaps you have thought of someone and then heard from that person or bumped into them, or had a hunch or a feeling that something would happen. Your intuition is the compass that will always point you in the right direction. The door is already open; dare you step through?

TUNING YOUR MIND

Clairvoyance is special sight (literally, it means "clear sight") that allows you to see the future in a crystal ball or a tea-cup. If you can think of a lemon, see its shape and color, cut it in half and smell its aroma in your mind, you have clairvoyant powers. If not, you can become clairvoyant by training your imagination to visualize an object or situation.

Psychics have the power to feel, such as divining by psychometry (below). You can encourage your psychic powers in a number of ways, often with the help of a friend. The more often you try these methods, the more accurate your predictions will be.

PSYCHIC POWERS

Try sensing a drawing. Begin by holding out your left palm, flat and face up. While you have your eyes closed, a friend should draw a shape in the air-either a heart shape, a square, a circle, a wavy line or a cross-about 30 mm above your palm. Your hallenge is to sense whi h shape they have drawn.

TELEPATHY

Telepathy is thought transference, or communication between minds using extrasensory means.

Take a deck of playing cards. Remove all the face cards so that you are left with numbers one to ten in each suit. Shuffle the remaining 40 cards (20 will be red and 20 black) and pass them to a friend.

The pair of you should then sit back to back. Ask your friend to remove the top card and telepathically convey to you the number on the card and the color of the card. The pair of you should continue until the pack has been exhausted. Again, the more often you try, the more accurate you will become.

PSYCHOMETRY

Psychometry is the divination of facts about a person via his or her possessions.

To intuit a friend's feelings or details from their past, present, or future, ask to hold an item of their jewelry, such as a watch or ring. Hold it with your eyes closed for a few moments. Because the item has absorbed your friend's aura-the distinctive energy emanating from their body-you should be able to make a prediction in only five minutes.

Another method is to hold to your forehead a letter or card someone has sent. You will detect their mood, character and surroundings in which the letter was written.

More than just tarot

This handy book gives alot of ways for divining the future. It contains scrying, tea leaves, and using regular playing cards to tell the future. Doesn't go into a lot of detail on everything but is a good place to start if you are a beginner. I love the way the book is fashioned, kind of like a personal diary.

Truly Astonishing!

I have read Gillian Kemp's material for over 10 years and with each published book she provides new information to help guide us. This book includes various methods to foretell ones future. My favorite is within the middle section of the book on how to use regular playing cards to foretell the next three or twelve months along with many other layouts that allow us to ask questions.

I couldnt help but search for her online for a personal reading and sure enough, I came across her website and had a reading with her over the phone. Shes very friendly and her readings are highly accurate and the timeframes are right on - just like the book :).

A must have for anybody who would like to take a sneak peak at their near and distant future.

In this middle-school drama, two seeming opposites become friends and discover they are not such opposites after all. Peters (How Do You Spell G-E-E-K?) does little to update this well-trod theme, and while there are touching moments in her book, it's generally bland. Nerdy Antonia is assigned to peer-counsel Jazz, whom Antonia assumes is "hopeless. A punker. A druggie. A gang hanger." After a few agonizing sessions, Antonia begins to realize how much she needs someone to talk to. Her dad has split (as readers learn midway through), her mom's so depressed she can't get out of bed and Antonia's overwhelmed with responsibility and pain. Not only does Jazz literally intervene to get her family back on the road to recovery, but by offering her friendship, Antonia learns to depend on someone besides herself. In turn, she helps Jazz learn to talk to her parents and to compromise on arguments without compromising herself. They both learn that judging people by their outside appearance can be misleading. Occasionally, Peters captures a feeling perfectly, like Antonia's loneliness. "That's how I feel, I thought. Like a star...," she says, looking at the sky. "Distant. Detached. Blinking. On-off. On-off." Mostly, though, the exposition depends more on telling than showing. Ages 8-12. (Apr.)

Grade 7-10-When Antonia is assigned to Jazz as a peer counselor, she figures there is no way she can help this tattooed, pierced, incorrigible girl. They are complete opposites. Antonia is a straight-A student whose parents are divorced and she is struggling to keep what's left of her family together as her mother battles depression. Jazz's family is wealthy and seemingly perfect. As they continue through the 15 hours of peer counseling, it becomes clear that both girls have issues they need to work through. They go from wary classmates to friends who support and help one another. As Antonia's mother is hospitalized for her depression, Jazz battles her own mother's need to control by quitting the one thing she loves most-playing classical piano. Both girls deal with their losses by finding new ways to look at their problems and to resume life as "normally" as possible. This believable book is well written and readers will feel that they know both Jazz and Antonia, and they will want to see them triumph over the frustrations in their lives.

Antonia Dillon, a driven honor student at Oberon Middle School, is not surprised when she is asked to become a peer counselor. It's just another honor to add to her resume. But her first counseling session is pure culture shock--Antonia has been paired with the notorious Jasmine "Jazz" Luther, a punker with incredible attitude who uses black lipstick and is into body piercing and tattoos. As the two girls reluctantly continue their sessions, a strange, tentative friendship develops, with each girl gradually revealing more and more about her troubled life. Antonia admits that her divorced mother is deeply depressed and unable to work or care for her family; Jazz talks about her controlling, materialistic yuppie parents and their expectations. As secret after secret is exchanged, it becomes obvious that the "priss" and the punker are made to be best friends. Although the book is marred by one-dimensional secondary characters and a pat conclusion, girls will still enjoy the appealing main characters in this after-school-special-style friendship story. A quick, enjoyable read that will also attract reluctant readers. Jean Franklin

Anything But Normal

Antonia, a straight-A student, a teacher-pleaser, and a "priss," is assigned Jasmine, a punker, a "in-your-face" non-conformist, for peer counseling in their middle school. Both are certain that the counseling is a waste of their time. But as Antonia's home life disintegrates, she finds she looks forward to meeting with Jazz. And Jazz likes talking with Antonia about her family life as well. The two slowly form a bond.

This is much more than a book about two girls in middle school. It's about the effects that both "good" and "bad" parents have on their children, it's about deciding what is, and isn't, normal, and it's about accepting the non-conformists in our midst.

This is an excellent book for all ages (even though it is about 8th graders, high schoolers can get something from it). Parents, too, should read it - it might help them understand what - and more importantly why - their children are revolting.

My Review for "Define 'Normal'"

I enjoyed reading "Define 'Normal'" very much. I found it to be an excellent book because I can relate all too well to both Antonia and Jazz. In this story it clearly shows how it is sometimes hard to accept a reaching hand and how sometimes you just want to take care of things on your own. Still, it shows the power of friendship and how much friends can help us, and how friendship can be found in the most unexpected places.

I've re-read this book many times from the local library, and have come to decide to buy my own hardcover copy of it. Love this book, awesome read.

Interesting, even funny at times

I liked this book. It was pretty cool, and on the overall, quite well-written. I finished it in one day though. The story wasn't too long, and I felt the author could've written it even better if she'd put in more to give us more complete, 3-dimensional characters. However Julie Anne Peters has tackled the problems that teenagers nowadays do face, so we can relate. The plot was o.k, really, at first it started off a little not-so-good, but then the story started to thicken and you got more involved with Jazz and Antonia. That was when it started to get interesting and made you want to read on. I liked the part about the girls' peer counseling programs, and their discussions. It seemed genuine enough, like typical conversations, not fake or contrived. Like I said though, this is a good book on the whole, even if not excellent. Those aged 11 and above will probably enjoy it. 'Define "Normal" ' makes for good, fun reading.

Anita Shreve's All He Ever Wanted reads like Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own told from the perspective of the husband. The wife gains a measure of freedom, but how does the repressive, abandoned husband feel about that freedom? Set in the early 1900s in the fictional New England college town of Thrupp, and narrated by the pompous Nicholas Van Tassel, All He Ever Wanted is at once an academic satire, a period novel, and a tale of suspense. Shreve's ability to nimbly hop through genres brings a liveliness to this story of love gone depressingly wrong. Van Tassel is an undistinguished professor of rhetoric at Thrupp College and a confirmed bachelor when he meets--in no less flamy a scenario than a hotel fire--the arresting Miss Etna Bliss. Immediately smitten, he woos and wins her. At least, he persuades her to become his wife. But Van Tassel hasn't really won her. Etna keeps her secrets and her feelings to herself. The extent of her withholding only becomes clear after a couple of kids and a decade or so of marriage. Then we find out that she's been creating a secret haven for herself all along. Van Tassel is in turn revealed--through his own priggish, puffed-up sentences--as something of a monster. The book is cleverly done; watching Etna through Van Tassel's eyes is like looking at beautiful bird from a hungry cat's point of view. But Van Tassel's voice might be too well written; he's pedantic and dull and snarky all at once, and by the end we find that we, like Etna, can't bear his company a minute longer. --Claire Dederer

She is less successful this time out, perhaps because the epiphany is one-sided. Escaping from a New Hampshire hotel fire at the turn of the 20th century, Prof. Nicholas Van Tassel catches sight of Etna Bliss and is instantly smitten. She does not reciprocate his feeling, for she has her own unrequited lust, for freedom and independence. That they marry guarantees tragedy. Nicholas tells the story in retrospect, writing feverishly on a train trip in 1933 to his sister's funeral in Florida. His pedantic style is full of parenthetical asides, portentous foreshadowing and rhetorical throat. His erotic swoon commands sympathy, until it carries him past any definition of decency. He will do anything to bring down Philip Asher, his academic rival and the brother of Etna's true love, Samuel. He plays on prevailing anti-Semitism (the Ashers are Jewish), and he persuades his daughter, Clara, to claim that Philip touched her improperly, which besmirches not only Philip's reputation but Clara's as well. We see Etna herself only secondhand, except for some correspondence with Philip reproduced toward the end of the tale. Credit the author for making the point that Etna and her sisters had too little autonomy even to tell their own stories, but filtering Etna's experience through Nicholas's sensibility deprives the novel of intimacy and immediacy.

Shreve at her very best! One of my favorite books of 2003!

Like Fortune's Rocks and Sea Glass, All He Ever Wanted by Anita Shreve is a book filled with wonderful characters set against a historical background of social mores and traditions. And as she did in he previous historical novels, the author offers her readers a wonderful novel and one that left me wishing for another book by Anita Shreve.
All He Ever Wanted begins during a fire when Nicholas Van Tassel, a professor at a small college in New Hampshire, spots a young woman and accompanies her home that evening. Almost immediately Nicholas becomes besotted with the woman Ms. Etna Bliss and begins courting her. From this point of the narrative, Shreve moves the scene to a time many years later as Nicholas recounts the story of his love for Etna on a train as he is bound for his sister's funeral in Florida. At this point Shreve becomes almost a modern day Edith Wharton as through Nicholas we come to learn about his views of society in the early 1900's through 1930. As readers, we watch as Nicholas becomes further obsessed with Etna, thwarts a rival for a competitive position at the college and eventually comes under scrutiny for a transgression he did many years before. And as these events are taking place we also watch as Nicholas' and Etna's relationship begins to spiral out of control and wonder how this will all be resolved. For in the end all Nicholas ever wanted is the love of Etna.
I highly recommend this book to those readers who have enjoyed Anita Shreve in the past and for those who may want to read her for the first time. The author has a wonderful ability to put her readers right between the pages of the book. In addition the narrative evokes the language and society of the 1900's. Shreve has done an excellent job of describing these events from the point of view of a man deeply in love and this book makes for a very worthwhile read. I enjoyed it so much that I rated it among my ten top favorite reads for 2003.

Why spend time with someone so thoroughly unpleasant?!

All He Ever Wanted begins with a hotel fire in the early 1900's. The narrator of the story (who is recounting his past while en route to his sister's funeral) bachelor Nicholas Van Tassel, a stuffy professor at a snotty boys' school, is inside the hotel when the blaze begins but leaves unscathed. During this tragedy where twenty people perish in a fiery death he meets the woman of his dreams, Etna Bliss.
Etna's "handsome" face, her lovely waist and her other womanly attributes haunt his every thought. Even her name, Bliss, brings lusty thoughts to his mind (and starts my skin to crawling). His infatuation is all consuming and before long he begins to pursue her with all of the gusto of a starving dog drooling over a choice bit of meat. She eventually agrees to a date where he learns, a bit to his dismay, that she has a brain as well as fine breasts and is surprisingly literate. They read stories together and seem to get along well but when he makes a move or turns the conversation towards the personal she immediately gives him the cold shoulder. I should add that Nicholas is described as the most un-athletic man on earth with a slight paunch and a balding pate. The sexual attraction seems entirely one-sided and a bit creepy. At this point I would've put the book aside unfinished as I found Nicholas Van Tassel boring beyond belief and far too pompous. However, since I was listening to this in its unabridged format and I was stuck in traffic I continued to torture myself with Nicholas Van Tassel's words (expertly read by a narrator who reads in a purposely haughty way).
Despite the fact that Etna does not return his feelings of undying love he insists that they marry and, oddly enough, she agrees! Thus begins their awkward life together. During their years of marriage they parent two children (and, thakfully, we are spared the oogey details of their sterile love making ~ thank you Mr. Van Tassel for speedily skipping by those bits and saving me a few shudders!) and seem to get along decently enough as they plod along through their days. Nicholas gives Etna a nice life and the freedom to do whatever she wishes but sadly the love Nicholas aches for is never returned by Etna. Nicholas, the poor love starved sap, is grateful just to have her for his wife and doesn't complain about her complete lack of affection towards him. But things begin to change when he discovers that Etna has been hiding things from him. This is where the book finally picked up and actually engaged my full attention.
At this point Nicholas *almost* becomes a sympathetic character if you can believe it (though he is still a thoroughly unpleasant fellow)! He is riddled with insecurities and although he has been married to a woman he cherishes for years he will never be a happy or successful man. His world begins to spiral out of control as he simultaneously discovers Etna's been keeping secrets and learns the position he's been longing to have at the University may be forever out of his reach.
Nicholas's festering jealously and over-reaction to Etna's secret (which was odd but not nearly as devastatingly earth-shattering as I'd anticipated), however, ruin any smidgen of pity I may have felt for him just a few chapters earlier. Author Shreve successfully paints an unpleasant picture of a thoroughly unpleasant man caught up in a situation of his own making. Reading Nicolas Van Tassel's vitriolic comments and actions for pages on end was a depressing experience that I won't be repeating any time soon!

Gripping and Unforgettable

Anita Shreve simply does not write ordinary books. Even her lesser efforts tend to leave the reader gasping for air at the end--and "All He Ever Wanted," one of her best, in my opinion, is breathtaking in the same shocking way.
Written entirely from the point of view of a stodgy male college professor circa 1900, this is the story of a passion so intense, so unlike the writer himself, that it is scarcely believable, especially when related in the stilted flowery language of the day.
Nicholas Van Tassel, a rather ordinary pedantic with nothing particularly unusual about him, happens to be in a hotel restaurant when it catches fire. This single pivotal episode in his otherwise unremarkable life changes him forever--it is during the rescue effort that he encounters Miss Etna Bliss, and falls head over heels into a passion that borders on, indeed IS, an obsession.
Hampered by the extreme rules of etiquette governing proper men and women of the day, Van Tassel nevertheless pursues Miss Bliss, finally persuading her to marry him despite her the fact that, as she honestly tells him, she does not love him. Love will come, thinks Van Tassel, hardly able to believe his luck in winning his prize. And that hope, that fantasy, that overwhelming obsession of his entire being, eventually destroys the narrator, his wife, and his entire family.
Shreve stays in character completely and thoroughly, managing to evoke the failings of the man himself, the restrictions of the society in which he lives, and the hopelessness of his obsession without ever once betraying herself. It is safe to say that the author stays well in the background while letting Van Tassel tell his own tragic story.
I consider this book a minor masterpiece. Shreve is an acquired taste, I know--but truly innovative and absolutely original in every book she writes. "All He Ever Wanted" is no exception.
