Dust jacket notes: "Some people think of writers as those who spend their lives huddled in a garret scribbling away and never experiencing real life. Jacqueline Jackson, noted author of many books, says that anyone, child or adult, who wants to write meaningfully and well cannot afford to hide away from life. Indeed, she suggests that it is only by opening up all our senses to the myriad aspects of life around us that our writing can become rich and colorful. Using examples from the work of writers, giving insights into her own methods of writing, and inviting the reader to share many of her own family's feelings and experiences, Mrs. Jackson echoes the lines of Lewis Carroll's 'The Lobster-Quadrille': 'Turn not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the dance.' The dance is life; the writing is about it. Jacqueline Jackson gives us all a very special invitation to join in."

For those who are writers at heart, and don't know it!
By A Customer
I read this book for the first time in Junior High. It was an answer to everything about writing I was looking for. It assured me that EVERYTHING I put on paper was, in some form, a piece of art. Suddenly, a pen on paper moved easily from line to line, never wondering if the words were "creative" enough. I highly reccomend this book for all ages. It is out of print, but is worth every penny if you can find it!

Nano: The Emerging Science of Nanotechnology: Remaking the World-Molecule

It's the ultimate technology: nanotechnology--the attempt to build ordinary objects from the atoms up, molecule by molecule. So named because its building blocks are the smallest pieces of matter, nanotechnology will give us complete control over the structure of matter, allowing us to build any substance or structure permitted by the Laws of Nature. Placing atoms as if they were bricks, nano-machines could turn grass clippings into prime sirloin--directly, without cows. They could turn coal into diamond, & sheets of diamond into rocket engines. Suitably reprogrammed, the tiny machines could repair all of your body's ailing cells. Science fiction? Actually, scientists have already isolated individual atoms and moved them at will, even using them to spell out words on a scale so small that the entire ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA can be written on the head of a pin. Conceived by Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynmen & pioneered by the remarkable K. Eric Drexler, who earned the first Ph.D. in the field he created at MIT more than a decade ago, nanotechnology is astoundingly near. In NANO, acclaimed science writer Ed Regis introduces us to the visionary engineers & scientists--as well as the critics--of this imminent technological revolution & shows how their work may soon begin changing the world as we know it, with fleets of molecular assemblers churning out essential commodities without human labor, the world economy would be transformed, famine & poverty banished forever. With cell-repair devices coursing through the human body, aging could be postponed, even halted, common diseases eradicated permanently. But would this new world be a return to Eden or a rash step into a dangerous future? Programmed differently, those same molecular machines could become agents more potent than the deadliest viruses. Articulate, intelligent, & entertaining, Regis reports on the wonders and perils of this new technology, & traces its philosophical implications.

Amazon.com Review
K. Eric Drexler envisions a world in which poverty and hunger no longer exist, because food can be made out of thin air, and we never grow old, because cells can be regenerated as swiftly as they "age." Nanotechnology, the manipulation of matter at the molecular level, is what he's betting will make it happen. Ed Regis tells the story of Drexler's forays into this new science, showing the scientist's attempts to convince his colleagues that he hasn't descended into pulp fiction. He also fills in a lot of the historical and technical background, from the 19th-century arguments over whether atoms exist to modern experiments that have isolated and manipulated single atoms. Regis's prose is clear and straightforward, but not without a sly sense of humor. Apart from Drexler's own Engines of Creation, this is the book on nanotechnology to read.

From Publishers Weekly
Still in its infancy, nanotechnology, or molecular engineering, has as its goal the manipulation of atoms and molecules to manufacture virtually anything. Nanotechnologists aspire to create "designer proteins" that will assemble themselves into atomic-scale, self-replicating machines; and, in fact, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman predicted atomic-scale machinery as early as 1959. Billions of these "molecular robots" will replace human labor, restructuring matter to make houses, sailboats and cars, say nanotechnologists. With such control of nature, they predict, these proteins will one day eradicate diseases and greatly extend the human lifespan. While critics dismiss such proposals as quixotic, science writer Regis (Who Got Einstein's Office?) seems more optimistic in this engaging report on what may be tomorrow's alchemy. He describes the rudimentary feats, blueprints and aspirations of molecular engineers, notably MIT aerospace scientist K. Eric Drexler, the field's pioneer. Photos.

From Library Journal
Nobel laureate physicist Richard Feynman was the first to espouse the theory of molecular technology in 1959. It was 20 years later that much interest was shown, when K. Eric Drexler, an MIT graduate student, became fascinated with the idea of manipulating atoms and molecules to form tiny machines, which in turn could manufacture products to eliminate hunger, sickness, and poverty. When he published his ideas in the September 1981 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, he became the leading proponent and guru of "nanotechnology" (a word he coined to describe this process). Not much was written about this absorbing subject until about ten years ago, but since then the literature has mushroomed, including Drexler's own Unbounding the Future: The Nanotechnology Revolution (LJ 10/15/91). Science writer Regis (Great Mambo Chicken and the Transhuman Condition, LJ 8/90) traces the short history of nanotechnology intertwined with an account of the life and times of Drexler. This was my first Nanotechnology book.
By M. A. Hancock
I read this book as a hardcover about 9 years ago when I was still in highschool, it was a fast and very interesting read then, and it still is today. Even if it lacks actual scientific material(Though possesses a lot of basic science facts and detailed examples of real nanotechnology as well as mostly theoretical) and glorifies the what-ifs and Ed Regis' obsession with this dude Drexler, it is a very good book for the science dreamer. And it helped me get an A on my research paper even if my teacher didn't understand what the hell I was babbling about. This is a great book for a highschool-level research paper, but iffy for a serious college paper, since it is so outdated and the technology won't come in our lifetimes thanks to politics and a god complex.

I give this an 82% enjoyment, as you don't have to be a science nut to understand the book.

My perceptions of Nano! by Ed Regis
By mpalmer@tne.net.au
I found Nano an interesting read. As a book, it lacked a lot of the technical guts, and more importantly, a broad overview of the potential social issues involved. But although I found this a little dissapointing, I stand in defence of the author for the simple reason that the average person usually doesn't have the skill to read deep technical texts (a skill which is developed by a long interest and/or study in the area). As a primer to the extremely important concepts and issues concerning nanotechnology, I give it a thumbs up. He generally sticks to the realities of the technology, avoiding the inevitable sci-fi fan rubbish which can congeal around such concepts (look a space travel, after all). I can understand not going into the more social and political issues of such an emerging technology as it can scare people, but I still think he should have elaborated more in this area. People have enough trouble dealing with the technology of today, having them (even more) unprepared for future technologies can be extremely dangerous. The best read on Molecular Nanotechnology for the average reader would still remain 'Engines of Creation', by Dr. K Eric Drexler. The book is still value for money, regardless. I give it four stars.

It's important to familiarize yourself with this...
By A Customer
This book provided me with my first FACTUAL survey of this science-fiction-ish area of scientific research. Nanotechnology, as the blurb up above says, is the emerging science of creating self-replicating robots the size of molecules. These tiny robots, if developed, should be able to have an almost unimaginable impact on human civilization. For example, they could be swallowed in the form of a tablet, which might release millions of tiny robots into the body with the aim of attacking cancer cells. They could be set to work transforming, for example, grass clippings into rice by monkeying around with the composition of grass at the atomic level. People are seriously researching scary stuff like this. There is a lot of science fiction out there about this kind of thing, especially dealing with the infamous (and not impossible) "gray goo" scenario, in which nanorobots run amok and accidentally rip the whole planet into undifferentiated submolecular slime.
Ed Regis is careful here to present the actual state of the field, and also to give some interesting insights into the curiously cultlike following that has grown up around Eric Drexler.
I recommend this book as a dispassionate assessment of what really COULD be one of the biggest technological revolutions since... oh, I don't know... the wheel comes to mind. Or fire. Or the printed word. My only problem with this book is that it's slightly behind the times nowadays. Nanotechnology is even less science fiction today, in 2001, than it was when this book came out. People should understand, while reading this, that IBM, Hewlett Packard, and other corporate behemoths are spending tens of millions of dollars RIGHT NOW to develop nanotechnology. Some of America's top business schools have Nanotechnology Clubs to monitor potentially lucrative developments in this field -- I'm thinking specifically of Wharton, which I know for a fact has such a club, and I've been told that Stanford and Harvard do as well.
I don't think it's possible to be too highly aware of this field of study. I recommend buying this book, and talking about it with family and friends. Pass it around, encourage your friends to pick up a copy for themselves. If you are in school, or have children in school, ask your science teacher to try to do a unit on it. Heck, why not form a club. Try anything, it doesn't matter what you do specifically, just try to become informed. Also -- it is easy to find newsgroups and listservs online about nanotechnology. Just go to any search engine and type in "nanotechnology" and "listserv," and you'll find a source of valuable information for yourself.
This book is very worth owning. Two thumbs up.

From Publishers Weekly
Phibbs, now a retired Arizona cardiologist, used the "flaming tedium" and sleepless nights of WW II to record the events and impressions that comprise this engrossing, splendidly written memoir. He recounts a year spent as surgeon for a 3000-man combat command, which fought its way from Lorraine to the Bavarian Alps via newly liberated, typhus-ravaged Dachau. Both as participant and observer, his evocations of battles and the men who fought them and of the endless stream of wounded are extraordinarily vivid. He chronicles achievements, friendships and heroic acts along with terror, pain and the stupidity of bureaucracies of all kinds, treating with contempt comfort-loving chaplains, French collaborators and the arrogance of certain generals. Phibbs's compassion, appreciation of life and sense of humor make palatable the horrors he recreates.

From Library Journal
Personal memoirs of U.S. Army medics are not common, and this one is among the best. These frank and highly anecdotal reminiscences of a cardiologist-surgeon who served with an armored division in the European theater tell relatively little of the history of the Army's Medical Service, but a great deal about the author. The effect is like listening to the war stories of a crusty yet still idealistic uncle whose idealism and anguish shine through his skepticism about the human animal. Beautifully written portrayal of US Infantry in WWII
By A Customer
One of my all-time favorite books, this is a beautifully written account of what WWII was actually like for US Infantry in western Europe. Unlike many WW II books in which the men who did the actual fighting are reduced to footnotes, the ordinary soldier is the "hero" of this book. These men come across in Phibb's book as what they were: ordinary Americans who overcame mind-numbing horror and fatigue in order to force the Nazis back into their holes. Steven Spileberg should have made this book into a movie instead of "Saving Private Ryan" if he had wanted to show what the war in western Europe was really like for ordinary soldiers.

Read this book.
By Terry A. Reeves
This book should be required reading for every human being on the planet. The author not only paints pictures with words, he makes you feel the emotion of the moment in your own heart. Wait until you read about the girl playing the piano and you will know what I mean.
Enough said.

the other side of time
By A Customer
this is an honest, in-your-face account of front line fighting in Europe during WWII. it exposes the military hierarchy in a way that should make all US citizens never miss the chance to vote. his accounts of the medical problems amaze this practicing physician of 20 years. this should receive the same accolades as The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw. Dr. Phibbs needs to continue to write in his incomperable style.

Greene
By Christian Schlect
A nicely edited selection of the letters of the English novelist and public figure.

Those with a special interest in Graham Greene and his career will enjoy these often-short letters written to a multitude of friends, lovers, and fellow artists, such as the Waughs (Evelyn and Auberon), Catherine Walston and Michael Korda.

The letters themselves are well written but are often more straightforward communications than pieces of polished literary prose. Fans and students of Mr. Greene's work will benefit from the scattered background material and insights to his many published efforts, such as "The Comedians" and "The Power and the Glory."

Graham Greene, while a solid believer in free speech, was certainly on the left fringe of Cold War politics and an anti-American having expressed, as an example, support for Manuel Noriega of Panama with such a thought as "...if I have to choose between a drug dealer and American imperialism I prefer the drug dealer."

Well-chosen windows into a life and mind
By Sean Johnson
I'll tell anyone who asks that a vital part of being a well-rounded reader is reading biographies, and in some cases a well-edited collection of personal correspondence can be just as insightful and informative as a traditional biography. That is very much the case with this book. Richard Greene (no relation) has very effectively selected and arranged the letters most representative of Greene's relationships, character, and personal shifts.

Greene's letters are a thoroughgoing testament to his literary brilliance, and a wrenching diary of his struggle to love and trust the Lord more than himself-a battle he was not always winning. Greene quoted Charles Peguy in the epigraph to The Heart of the Matter: "The sinner is at the very heart of Christianity. . . . No one is as competent as the sinner in Christian affairs. No one, except the saint." But it may have been Peguy's next line that best explained Greene: "And in principle they are the same man."

Deft editing

Immensely interesting, deftly edited. Richard Greene provides just enough information to explain the context of Graham Greene's letters without overwhelming the reader. Graham Greene's quirky, evasive, humorous personality comes through in his letters.

The Pugilist at Rest: Stories, by Thom Jones

Thom Jones made his literary debut in The New Yorker in 1991. Within six months his stories appeared in Harper's, Esquire, Mirabella, Story, Buzz, and in The New Yorker twice more. "The Pugilist at Rest" - the title story from this stunning collection - took first place in Prize Stories 1993: The O. Henry Awards and was selected for inclusion in Best American Short Stories 1992. He is a writer of astonishing talent. Jones's stories - whether set in the combat zones of Vietnam or the brittle social and intellectual milieu of an elite New England college, whether recounting the poignant last battles of an alcoholic ex-fighter or the hallucinatory visions of an American wandering lost in Bombay in the aftermath of an epileptic fugue - are fueled by an almost brutal vision of the human condition, in a world without mercy or redemption. Physically battered, soul-sick, and morally exhausted, Jones's characters are yet unable to concede defeat: his stories are infused with the improbable grace of the spirit that ought to collapse, but cannot. For in these extraordinary pieces of fiction, it is not goodness that finally redeems us, but the heart's illogical resilience, and the ennobling tenacity with which we cling to each other and to our lives. The publication of The Pugilist at Rest is a major literary event, heralding the arrival of an electrifying new voice in American fiction, and a writer of magnificent depth and range. With these eleven stories, Thom Jones takes his place among the ranks of this country's most important authors.

Amazon.com Review
Thom Jones's first collection of stories is a revelation. In prose that sounds like nobody else, Jones channels a variety of distinctively different voices, from the lustful book editor of "Unchain My Heart" to the epileptic, amnesiac adman of the Dostoevskian fable "A White Horse." There's not a miss among these tales, but two in particular stand out: the title story, about a boxer and Vietnam vet who has plumbed the vicious depths of his own soul, and the almost unbearably intense chronicle of a woman fighting a losing battle with cancer, "I Want to Live!" "The world is replete with badness," says the aging fighter of "A Pugilist at Rest"; yet, as the narrator of "I Want to Live!" discovers, there is nothing stronger than the human will to go on, to persist--even in the face of the hell that exists right here on earth. It's not all gloom, doom, and napalm, however. There's also the surreal, Gogol-esque humor of "The Black Lights," in which the pysch-ward protagonist insists his only problem is epilepsy, yet hallucinates a giant, shuddering rabbit caught under his bed at night ("It's that rabbit on the Br'er Rabbit molasses jar. That rabbit with buckles on his shoes! Bow tie. Yaller teeth! Yaller! Yaller!") Then, too, Jones creates images of startling, surreal clarity amid the horror, like the dying lieutenant who remains on one knee even after being shot, "his remaining arm extended out to the enemy, palm upward in the soulful, heartrending gesture of Al Jolson doing a rendition of 'Mammy.'" Take a decidedly grim world-view, add a dose of existential slapstick, some Schopenhauer, an encyclopedic knowledge of pharmaceuticals, and a soundtrack by the Doors, and you have what may be the darkest, funniest, most urgent fictional debut in years. --Mary Park

From Publishers Weekly
Jones's gritty and poetic debut short-story collection was selected by PW as one of the best books of 1993.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Jones, a former marine and amateur boxer, recently published short stories in The New Yorker and Harper's. The themes dominating his first collection are violence, adultery, alcoholism, epilepsy, and madness. The sheer visceral intensity of Jones's prose is amplified by the sensitivity with which his characters are drawn: a soldier in Vietnam recognizes his capacity for violence in an ancient Roman statue; an abusive womanizer reacts with instinctive viciousness when he falls in love; a janitor attempts to lure a slow student from a potentially disastrous relationship; a dying woman finds solace in the pessimistic philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. Jones's gritty yet refined prose stands in sharp contrast to the more apologetic work of National Book Award winner Tim O'Brien ( Going After Cacciato , LJ 12/15/77; The Things They Carried , LJ 2/15/90), with whom critical comparison is inevitable. This outstanding collection is sure to be in demand in public libraries.

SHORT STORIES YOU REMEMBER FOR A LIFETIME
By Andrew Fookes
I last read this book 11 years ago when it came out in its first edition, and I still remember each story with such clarity it's like I just finished reading it this morning. That's nothing to do with my (atrocious) memory, but with the power and clarity of Jones' writing.
I liken Thom Jones to a literary Tom Waits.

brilliant.
By A Customer
I generally don't post reviews on here, but seeing Thom Jones called 'tacky' is just too much for my sensitive mind to bear. There is nothing 'tacky' about this guy, and there's certainly nothing tacky about his stories. They're remarkable -- plot, prose, philosophy, sentiment... all are beyond reproach. He's simply the best living short story writer, period. Probably one of the best ever (it's all subjective, ain't it?). 'I want to live,' already discussed by several people, is unusually moving and manages to convey in a few short pages an overwhelming sense of what one not-too-old dying woman goes through. So what if Jones digs schopenhauer and is not afraid to tell us about him? Anything that can be done by fiction writers to make people consider philosophy -- especially long-underappreciated Schopenhauer -- is, to me, welcome. And the Ad Magic stories which appear in 'Cold Snap' and 'The Pugilist at Rest' are just incredible. As for the critique of Jones on the grounds that his medical knowledge is insufficient -- please. That's not any kind of literary criticism, even if Jones had gotten the drug stuff completely wrong. It's just irrelevant nit-picking.
If you have not read anything by Thom Jones, do it. Buy something on here. Go to the store. Check one of his books out from the library.

Raw Rage
By TAH011
These are not stories to lull you to sleep at night. Reading Thom Jones is like running the marathon, or going several rounds in the ring or, for us desk jockeys, completing that hotly contested deal. You know you've been in a fight even if it is only a verbal one. Thom Jones' prose is raw and disturbing. Whether telling stories of Vietnam or boxing or struggles with serious illness, this collection bluntly but articulately tells of a dark and hostile world and the rage to live that constantly challenges it. Jones reexamines traditional machismo (even as demonstrated by female characters) and shows both the will to live and the naivete demonstrated therein. While these stories have a dark and cynical tone, they scream so loudly about the need to live that they are the perfect antidote to that feeling of cultural suffocation. Read them. They will leave their mark.

Ireland: A History, by Robert Kee

This book is an examination of the "prison of Irish history", back to its very beginnings, to identify the principal groups involved in Ireland. It traces the emergence of each group and their links over the ages, establishing how past facts have bred present myths. Revised to cover the events of recent years, the book provides an insight into the country's current political situation, especially in light of the 1994 ceasefire agreement.

A Fine Primer on Ireland
By Anthony O. Miller
Robert Kee's "Ireland: A History" is, simply put, a fine introductory overview of modern Ireland. By "modern" I refer to the time from a bit before the Viking invasion (roughly 797 C.E.), through the Free State to the founding of the Republic and into "The Troubles" of today. For my money, the book's major flaw was its brief, superficial treatment of ancient Celtic Ireland. There is so much more to Ireland's Gaelic past than Kee covers that one will need other books to fill this gap. As a dual national -- I'm an Irish and a U.S. citizen -- I did not really "need" Kee's book to learn of modern or ancient Ireland, or the supplementary works I later bought to cover the pre-Viking material his "Ireland: A History" did not; I already knew a fair bit about this as a function of my birth. [A Dublin-born Irishman gave me Kee's book to read while I lived in Cyprus, where English-language books are very dear, and one reads what one may already have read or known to save money.] As a further note, ultra-Republican friends of mine scoff at what they characterize as Kee's "royalist/loyalist" leanings, dismissing out of hand anything he has to say as not quite "shamrock green" enough for a "True Republican" to be citing him as a source on anything Irish. I personally did not find Kee a propagandist for the Crown, so do not subscribe out of hand to this IRA carping. I can grouse, however, at Kee's or his editors' failure to state in which Dublin museum hangs the heartbreaking painting of "The Flight of the Earls," found on page 38 of the book. On one occasion, I'd sought out the painting in the National Gallery in Dublin, only to learn it hung in another museum -- which was closed the day I went after it. Notwithstanding this, in my humble opinion, for those not of Irish extraction or citizenship (or ultra-Republican bent), Kee's book is a good, easily readable, healthy introduction to the Emerald Isle. It is devoid of any blarney-sentimental cliches or slanderous stereotyping of the "glib, gab-gifted, Guinness-gulping" Irishman. And it pulls no punches at Britain's guilt for its arguably deliberate genocide of the Irish in the Great Famine of 1845-49 and those lesser ones that grass-stained starving Irish mouths and blood-stained the 19th century. But it will fill in only so many blanks in one's understanding of that ageless island and its early people, with their lost-in-mists religions, languages, superstitions, culture and monuments. Those wanting more will have to buy other works, such as Peter Beresford Ellis' "The Ancient World of the Celts," for instance. Overall, I found Kee's "Ireland: A History" a good survey course in Ireland, so much so that I bought it as a gift for a friend of Irish extraction, who'd developed a keen interest in tracing his own roots -- and in applying for Irish citizenship. On balance, Kee's book is worth the money and the read.

Recent Irish History

It's not possible to compress the rich history of Ireland into one small book, but this book which spans about two centuries is well written and concise. The book was assigned for a Stanford University Continuing Studies course and was a very interesting overview of recent history. The themes of Irish dissension against the British were well developed.

Best Ireland Primer

The photographs speak volumes
By A Customer
With a fabulous introduction, this book begins with beautiful photographs of fathers and their children. It includes famous dads like John F. Kennedy and Mickey Mantle, but also includes everyday and ordinary fathers. There is no written text, but the photographs speak for themselves. Many of the photos show everyday moments. The photos in this book are poignant. This would make a great book for all dads everywhere.

Great photographic shout-out to fathers :-)
By EpicFehlReader
This collection has a nice mix of images of fathers both famous and not. There are some really great photographs of Old Hollywood celebrities and their kids as well as some rarely seen photos of JFK and RFK and their children. The inside endpapers are also pretty cute with the father & child silhouette images. There are some nice companion quotes as well. Didn't love this collection quite as much as the companion book celebrating mothers, but still a really nice photographic book perfect for gifting!

The diaries of 1 of the century's greatest entertainers. For over half a century Noel Coward was the British theatre's most renowned dramatist, director and star, and 1 of the most colourful charcters who ever strode across it's stage. These diaries chronicle the last 30 years of his life, from his war time concert tours, through his pprivate and professional depression in the 1950's, to his triumphant re-emergence in the 1960's and knighthood in 1970.

From Library Journal
Coward's diaries from 1941 to 1969 offer an intimate look at the last 30 years of the life of the popular, sophisticated British playwright and author. While some of the entries are of the "Stayed out until 4 at Mrs. B___'s party" variety, more of them give insight into Coward's well-connected life. Coward knew or met hundreds of people working in the theater, the movies, and the government, and encounters with Vivien Leigh, Marilyn Monroe, King George IV, Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother, to name just a few, are included here. Excellent footnotes provided by editors Morley and Payn (My Life with Noel Coward) give a one-sentence description of such notables as "Larry" (Laurence Olivier) and "Dickie" (Lord Louis Mountbatten). Coward wrote these diaries with an eye toward publishing and therefore seemed to take great care to write, if not kindly about everyone, then perhaps not as harshly as he could have. Still, there are enough juicy tidbits to satisfy any biography-reading seeker of stars, starlets, and royalty. A thorough index enhances star browsing. For public libraries. J. He created his own masterpiece, which was Himself
By Patricia M. Jones
The diaries of Noel Coward in this book begin in 1941, continuing through December, 1969. His early years in the theatre and his war diaries have been published elsewhere. In my lifetime, Noel Coward was an icon of theatrical entertainers. Now I realize why, He gave everything of his talents and his time to his professional life and never sold out his own vision of his creations, musically and otherwise. He never envisioned being "profound"; he wanted the light touch, the deft revelations even in domestic comedy. He deplored the "kitchen sink" drama boys when they appeared in England who all seemed to take over and destroy lucidity; audibility; and compassion in the theatre thereafter. Readers will thoroughly enjoy the graceful, revealing and sincere "talking" these annual diaries convey from the mind of Noel Coward. He has a very good friend in himself, one feels. That is quite a feat in itself.

It is apparent reading his diaries- with the fascinating details of the processes- that to him, creating his musicals, his poetry and novels and his plays gave a joy to him in the making. Producing, directing and dealing with the vagaries of his stars and casts was another kettle of fish. He records them all, at their best and worst; most of them had been his friends for years. Reading about his work and weekly social calendars is enough to exhaust the reader; he rarely refused an invitation, and was usually working on a piece at the same time.

He records the joy and progress that he and his close associates made through the world, literally, seeking the perfect house, actually houses, to relax in; eventually, to find the home locales that gave him tax relief from the harsh British tax climate.

It was enchanting to learn he presented the first "special" in color, in the U.S., nationally broadcast in 1955, starring Noel with Mary Martin. Both sang their popular numbers and performed some skits, for 90 minutes, a record in those days. Noel had to restage all the camera work before the performance which was live. The crew had "no idea how to film musical theatre before a camera." The national audience response was ecstatic for this "little box" show of Big Talent. All the reports said they were hungry for the witty, sophisticated & purely lovely talented singers, bright romantic songs and dances. It is sad to realize the public is still waiting for this kind of quality entertainment from television today. 690pp.

Enjoyed it very much. Reading his daily journal was so much more like a personal account than some of the biographies on Coward that I have read. Wish it had covered even more of his life. I could actually hear his voice thru his entries. Did not want the book to end.

Amazon.com Review
Oprah Book Club® Selection, May 1999: Astrid Magnussen, the teenage narrator of Janet Fitch's engrossing first novel, White Oleander, has a mother who is as sharp as a new knife. An uncompromising poet, Ingrid despises weakness and self-pity, telling her daughter that they are descendants of Vikings, savages who fought fiercely to survive. And when one of Ingrid's boyfriends abandons her, she illustrates her point, killing the man with the poison of oleander flowers. This leads to a life sentence in prison, leaving Astrid to teach herself the art of survival in a string of Los Angeles foster homes.

As Astrid bumps from trailer park to tract house to Hollywood bungalow, White Oleander uncoils her existential anxieties. "Who was I, really?" she asks. "I was the sole occupant of my mother's totalitarian state, my own personal history rewritten to fit the story she was telling that day. There were so many missing pieces." Fitch adroitly leads Astrid down a path of sorting out her past and identity. In the process, this girl develops a wire-tight inner strength, gains her mother's white-blonde beauty, and achieves some measure of control over their relationship. Even from prison, Ingrid tries to mold her daughter. Foiling her, Astrid learns about tenderness from one foster mother and how to stand up for herself from another. Like the weather in Los Angeles--the winds of the Santa Anas, the scorching heat--Astrid's teenage life is intense. Fitch's novel deftly displays that, and also makes Astrid's life meaningful. --Katherine Anderson

From Publishers Weekly
Thirteen-year-old Astrid Magnussen, the sensitive and heart-wrenching narrator of this impressive debut, is burdened with an impossible mother in Ingrid, a beautiful, gifted poet whose scattered life is governed by an enormous ego. When Ingrid goes to prison for murdering her ex-lover, Astrid enters the Los Angeles foster care program and is placed with a series of brilliantly characterized families. Astrid's first home is with Starr, a born-again former druggie, whose boyfriend, middle-aged Ray, encourages Astrid to paint (Astrid's absent father is an artist) and soon becomes her first lover, but who disappears when Starr's jealousy becomes violent. Astrid finds herself next at the mercy of a new, tyrannical foster mom, Marvel Turlock, who grows wrathful at the girl's envy of a sympathetic next-door prostitute's luxurious life. "Never hope to find people who will understand you," Ingrid archly advises as her daughter's Dickensian descent continues in the household of sadistic Amelia Ramos, where Astrid is reduced to pilfering food from garbage cans. Then she's off to the dream home of childless yuppies Claire and Ron Richards, who shower her with gifts, art lessons and the warmth she's been craving. But this new development piques Ingrid's jealousy, and Astrid, now 17 and a high school senior, falls into the clutches of the entrepreneurial Rena Grushenka. Amid Rena's flea-market wares, Astrid learns to fabricate junk art and blossoms as a sculptor. Meanwhile, Ingrid, poet-in-prison, becomes a feminist icon who now has a chance at freedomAif Astrid will agree to testify untruthfully at the trial. Astrid's difficult choice yields unexpected truths about her hidden past, and propels her already epic story forward, with genuinely surprising and wrenching twists. Fitch is a splendid stylist; her prose is graceful and witty; the dialogue, especially Astrid's distinctive utterances and loopy adages, has a seductive pull. This sensitive exploration of the mother-daughter terrain (sure to be compared to Mona Simpson's Anywhere but Here) offers a convincing look at what Adrienne Rich has called "this womanly splitting of self," in a poignant, virtuosic, utterly captivating narrative. Reading group guide; author tour. (Apr.) FYI: An excerpt from the novel was selected as a notable story in Best American Short Stories 1994.

From Library Journal
This novel will surely be hailed as one of the best novels of the year and is likely the best debut this reviewer has ever read. When beautiful, egotistical poet Ingrid murders the lover who dumped her, 12-year-old daughter Astrid descends into the hells of foster care, where she is sustained only by a fierce intelligence and great artistic talent. Shot and left for dead by her first mother, half-starved in a mansion by another, turned into a drudge by a racist, she nearly finds happiness and mutual love with Ron and Claire; but then Claire kills herself. Shopping with them, Ingrid wonders who would want a black (Christmas) tree, but I knew someone woulda belated Halloween, to decorate with plastic skullsor just for the pleasure of making their kids cry. Heartbreaking, but without a trace of sentimentality, this novel provokes amazement that children like Astrid can emerge whole and capable after what we know are even worse childhoods than hers.Judith Kicinski, Sarah Lawrence Coll. Incredible, hypnotic, seductive, I couldn't put it down.
By A Customer
White Oleander simply touched me more than almost any novel I have ever read. Astrid was a realistic character. Anyone who thinks that this novel was extreme and melodramatic in its portrayal of foster care obviously knows nothing of foster care or displaced children from disfunctional homes. Having worked in inpatient psychiatric units with both children and adults in state custody, I am well aware of how realistic Janet Fitch's book was.The things that happened to Astrid happen to children every day in this country. In fact reality is a little worse. The novel also presented the fact that we all recieve blessings and curses from our parents. Ingrid was a sociopath who did whatever she felt like doing regardless of who got hurt. She ruthlessly dominated her child's life "I am your home" and seemed to feel justified in doing so. However she also was a brilliantly educated poet who passed on the gifts that helped Astrid to survive her years in foster care: strength, independence, and a love of learning, a sharp intellect. I saw Astrid as a survivor who was as together as anyone could be after 6 years in foster care. In life, and in White Oleander, there is no happily ever after, and there are always loose ends. Fitch made me laugh and cry with her liquid poetry. A testement to survival.

By Nancy Hochman
I could not put this book down! "White Oleander" was wonderful from the very first sentence to the very last and I have Oprah to thank for bringing author Janet Fitch to my attention. The story is narrated by Astrid - a teenage girl - who suffers through years of living in the foster care system while her mother Ingrid serves a life sentence for murdering her ex-lover. (I can just envision a younger Angelina Jolie-type playing the role of Astrid in the film version.) Each family that Astrid lives with has its own unique (yet sometimes cliched) cast of characters that are instrumental in shaping and transforming the young woman she becomes. This is a novel of self discovery the hard way. I personally cannot imagine the loneliness and terror that Astrid experienced while bouncing from home to home to home. Ingrid stays present in Astrid's unstable life through letters and occasional visits and their strained relationship is key to Astrid's development. The character are so real, the writing style is beautiful, the plot moves swiftly and the story weaves the reader through every human emotion possible. While I'm not a fan of the Oprah Winfrey show, I am a fan of her book club and this novel ranks up there as one of her best picks.

I read white oleander as a teen and decided to see if it was as good as I had remembered. It was that and some. Beautifully tragic story.
