The Rival Queens: Catherine de' Medici, Her Daughter Marguerite de Valois, and the Betrayal that Ignited a Kingdom, by Nancy Goldstone

The riveting true story of mother-and-daughter queens Catherine de' Medici and Marguerite de Valois, whose wildly divergent personalities and turbulent relationship changed the shape of their tempestuous and dangerous century.

Set in magnificent Renaissance France, this is the story of two remarkable women, a mother and daughter driven into opposition by a terrible betrayal that threatened to destroy the realm.

Catherine de' Medici was a ruthless pragmatist and powerbroker who dominated the throne for thirty years. Her youngest daughter Marguerite, the glamorous "Queen Margot," was a passionate free spirit, the only adversary whom her mother could neither intimidate nor control.

When Catherine forces the Catholic Marguerite to marry her Protestant cousin Henry of Navarre against her will, and then uses her opulent Parisian wedding as a means of luring his followers to their deaths, she creates not only savage conflict within France but also a potent rival within her own family.

Rich in detail and vivid prose, Goldstone's narrative unfolds as a thrilling historical epic. Treacherous court politics, poisonings, inter-national espionage, and adultery form the background to a story that includes such celebrated figures as Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots, and Nostradamus. The Rival Queens is a dangerous tale of love, betrayal, ambition, and the true nature of courage, the echoes of which still resonate.

Review
"A highly dramatic dual biography.... If serious history readers believe that Tudor England is the only place where family and religious conflict at the highest level makes riveting reading matter, those folks need to take a close look across the English Channel and see what was transpiring at the same time in the French court.... The French contemporary to Elizabeth I was Queen Catherine de' Medici, widow of King Henri II and mother to three kings after him.... Tudor struggles pale in comparison! Read this along with Antonia Fraser's classic Mary Queen of Scots."
―Brad Hooper, Booklist (Starred Review)

Drops Reader Into Middle of 16th-Century French Court Politics
By Lynne E.
What really sets THE RIVAL QUEENS apart, is the readability. Far too many historical biographers write plodding, strictly chronological narratives that leave out nary a discovered fact. Not so with biographer Nancy Goldstone! Her introduction drops the reader immediately into the middle of 16th-Century French politics, by describing the arranged marriage of Marguerite de Valois, a devout Catholic, to Henry de Bourbon, a Huguenot; and by hinting at the assassinations of many members of the wedding party that are only days away.

This biography really explains--quite painlessly--how court politics worked in the 16th century. It brings home to the reader just how hard it was, even for those of royal status (e.g., Queen of France Catherine de' Medici; Princess Marguerite de Valois) to maintain any semblance of power, or even to stay alive, amidst the constant espionage and intrigues of the French wars of religion. Even members of the royal family--brothers and sisters, parents and children--spied on and turned against one another on the basis of spies' reports, both true and false. Marguerite, in particular, suffered from a false report of her liaison with a courtier that ruined her reputation shortly after she left the royal nursery to attend the French court.

Despite the importance of religion (Catholic or Protestant) to the devout rulers and populace of France, the 16th century French court was quite permissive about morality. Thus this dual biography entertains with accounts of various influential royal mistresses (e.g., Diane de Poitiers). Dianne de Poitiers actually coached Catherine de' Medici to help her provide King Henry II with the requisite heirs. The biography also shows with clarity what it was like to be a female member of a ruling family, a woman whose only perceived value lay in her ability to be married off in an advantageous-to-the-family political union. Only the most extraordinary women, like Queen Catherine and Queen Marguerite, managed to escape that role and actually wield political power.

This is a biography that makes you care about the characters, and about the unfolding nonfiction "plot". The writing is excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The fully-footnoted dual biography is supplemented by a useful map of France circa 1572, by a genealogical chart of the French royals, and by an excellent set of illustrations of paintings that depict the most important members of the French court, including the kings' mistresses.

Utterly Fascinating

This book was exceptionally well written. The royal characters were brought to life, and I wanted to keep reading to discover what happened next. I enjoyed Ms. Goldstone's style and am looking forward to her next book.

Queens, Kings, Flings and Religious Turmoil
By Billz
The book opens with the Queen mother inviting her son-in-law-to-be and all of his friends to the royal wedding in Paris. Then has them all murdered. So begins Nancy Goldstone's The Rival Queens.

This book is a summer treat that should be read with patience and awe—not a book to be gobbled up on a cross-country flight. While many Americans are familiar with Elizabeth I of England (mostly from films), very few know much about Catherine de' Medici or her daughter Marguerite de Valois (Queen Margot) who reigned in France during the 16th Century—part of a period generally known as the Renaissance. The mores of France during this period, and I suspect most royalty if not society at large, were ones seeped in both religious dogma and a happy hypocrisy. The religious dogma was such that adherents of one belief routinely murdered anyone of a different belief. In France, the schism was between the Catholics and French Protestants, knows as the "Huguenots." (For those unfamiliar with the term "Huguenot," it was the name given early Calvinists—who were something like the Puritans who sailed on the Mayflower to New England in the following century.) The happy hypocrisy lay in the fact that the kings of that period generally had extra-marital lovers—not just flings, but live-in lovers while the wives had to grimly suffer the humiliation and bear children. (Of course, most queens had lovers as well.)

Put in a larger context, the Renaissance occurred about the same time that the Ottoman Empire, fueled by Islamic proselytizing, was reaching its nadir in eastern Europe, western Asia and north Africa. The Spanish had just rid the Iberian peninsula of the Moors (and Islam) in 1492, and had instituted the Spanish Inquisition (1478) that made sure that any left-over Muslims converted to Catholic Christianity. (The Jews were also thrown into the same pot, even though they had no doctrinal ties to Islam.) Exploration and military conquests had made Spain the richest and most powerful nation in Europe controlling most of modern day Holland and Belgium as well as Spain. They were staunchly Catholic. However, since this period also spawned the Reformation begun when Martin Luther released "The Ninety-Five Theses" and fostered by theologians such as John Calvin (Jean Calvin)—not to mention the nascent printing press to distribute these new ideas—there was bound to be turmoil. Europe was a big Northern Ireland during The Troubles when the Unionist [Protestants] and Republicans [Catholics] were murdering each other—so it's not something the world has not seen since the Renaissance; just not on the same scale.

It would be an understatement to say that during this period people were touchy about their religious beliefs. Certain regions (or even towns), were Catholic and others were Huguenot. Most of France, especially Paris, were predominately Catholic, but regions like the Kingdom of Navarre, were Huguenot. In some ways the Renaissance in France looked more like the Dark Ages, Part II than the re-awakening associated with the Renaissance. The wars within and around France were chiefly religious ones, and costly to all concerned. However, as devout as they were to their religious beliefs, both Catholics and Protestants routinely had lovers, and as was the case with Queen Margot, forced a marriage between members of the opposite version of Christianity.

Often the Huguenots are depicted as somewhat dour in their fundamental version of Christianity, dressing in all-black; likened to crows. (H. L Mencken described the American Puritans—painted with the same Calvinist brush as the Huguenots— as people who were troubled by the "...haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.") That's not exactly right, but compared to the wild and crazy Catholics who made up the French court, there's some truth to it. We learn that as Queen, Catherine de' Medici, surrounded herself with a "flying squadron" of beautiful young women who were instructed on entertaining, spying and enlivening the French court. When on a visit to Navarre, a kingdom ruled by the Huguenot King Henry, Catherine's L'escadron volant ably and easily snatches the "black crows' " virtue. Catherine's Machiavellian plans are crafted by more by marrying off her children for political gain than for religious compatibility. Included in her plans are Queen Elizabeth (Protestant) of England to one of her sons, and Margot in the Spanish royal family (Catholic), among others.

The overall appeal of the book lies in the way that the author depicts a period of French royal history with care and what appears to be fairness (not balance—but dismissal of what appears to be gossip in favor of contextual facts). For example, La Reine Margot a novel by Alexandre Dumas (1845) suggests that Margot was introduced to sex by her brothers. (In the 1994 film, available on Netflix as "Queen Margot", the same insinuation was also made.) Goldstone refuses to credit those claims as nothing more than unsubstantiated rumors. Throughout the book the author takes care to be accurate. The focus is clearly on what the women in court had to endure during this period and how they rose to occasions beyond their posts.

Queen Catherine comes off as a survivor—at all costs. From the beginning of her life at a time when her family's fortunes were on the downswing until her death, she put up with a lot and did the best she could. She manipulated her children and French politics; sometimes with disastrous results. She comes off as a Machiavellian, but in reality Goldstone depicts many of her attempts as clumsy or even ridiculous. She was in a game where everyone had read Machiavelli, and their plans were just as devious as hers.

Queen Margot, on the other hand, who is in a loveless marriage to the King of Navarre, is beset by a series of betrayals her entire life but comes out (in the book at least) as the savvy player, the talented spy and the resourceful planner and woman of action. Her problems, in no small part, are due to her mother Catherine and brothers. (If you think you have mother-daughter issues; you won't after reading this book.) Alliances between warring parties outside of the court are one thing that Margot is adapt at handling; within the family the relations between herself and her brother(s) the King(s) and her mother are an impossible rat's nest of intrigue, paranoia and greed.

From Publishers Weekly
Capering caterpillars and blooming spring flowers ornament this bouncy reprise of a nursery standby. The book opens with musical stanzas for "The Eensy-Weensy Spider," along with a diagram of hand and arm gestures to be performed by the singer. A carnation-pink spider climbs a crocus-blue waterspout, while subsequent spreads describe the eight-legged heroine's garden adventures, all in keeping with the original tune: "The eensy-weensy spider met a baby bug./ 'Hi!' said the spider and gave the bug a hug./ 'Ugh!' said the bug. 'Your hug is much too tight!'/ 'I'm sorry,' said the spider. 'I meant to be polite.' " Hoberman (A House Is a House for Me) invents everyday scenarios in which the spider interacts with her friendly insect neighbors (e.g., she gets assistance from a glow worm when the sun goes down). Westcott (I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly) conjures the cozy vignettes with dainty pen-and-ink outlines and fresh watercolor hues of daffodil yellow and misty green. The spider's mother sits down to a meal of curds and whey, and the eensy-weensy spider drifts off to sleep in a spun-silk hammock. These pleasing new stanzas extend a favorite song and lend personality to an indomitable creature who never lets a little rain get in her way. Ages 4-8. (Apr.)

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-This expanded version of the popular hand rhyme takes the tiny spider on a series of further adventures. She skips out to play, meets a baby bug, takes a walk, goes for a swim with a frog, marches in a parade, falls and scrapes her knees, plops into a brook, buys new shoes (three pairs), follows a glowworm home in the dark, and falls asleep. "The eensy-weensy spider slept right through the night./When she awoke, the sun was shining bright./'Good,' said the spider, 'there isn't any rain!'/And the eensy-weensy spider went up the spout again." Whimsical, watercolor cartoons capture the lighthearted tone of the verse as they depict the spider and her insect friends' anthropomorphized world. This sprightly adaptation lends itself to singing aloud and is sure to be a hit.

From Booklist
The author-illustrator team behind Miss Mary Mack (1998) scores again with this rollicking, singsong poem that extends Eensy-Weensy's story beyond the drain pipe and through a spring day of adventures. Each passage of clever, entertaining rhymes scans to the rhythm of the song, which is reproduced on the first page and accompanied by instructions for hand and body motions. With her usual crayon-bright colors and charming detail, Westcott gives Eensy a strong personality all her own, which comes through clearly as she tumbles through a world of equally expressive insects and small animals. The day ends cozily, with Eensy snuggled into her mother's multiple arms, swinging in the web hammock. Few preschoolers are able to resist Eensy's short song. This long adaptation, filled with amusing action, is sure to become a perennial hit with them, too--and with parents and teachers as well. Gillian Engberg

A Must Have For Your Library
By A Customer
My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves the Itsy-Bitsy Spider song, so when I first saw this book at our local library I thought it would be a good book to read to her. I never thought that she would want it read over and over and remember the "new" verse's of the song only after reading it 2 times!! When I tried to return the book she cried and cried until I told her that we would get one of her own. When I started to look around at stores I discovered that this was a very difficult book to find due to its popularity. I was so thankful that I could find it on Amazon that I purchased 4 copies of it! I have already given them as gifts and received the most wonderful thank you notes from the parents of the children. This book is wonderful for ages 1 and up and should be part of all kids libraries!!

Waylon: Tales of My Outlaw Dad, by Terry Jennings

"This book is a terrific tribute, from a son to his father."---Willie Nelson

"I'm so excited about Terry's new book."---Dolly Parton

From the Foreword by Ken Mansfield

"There are many stories about Waylon . . . the family man, the creative genius man, the quiet man, the king-of-the-six-day-roar-man, the uncommon man, the legendary man, the bad-ass man . . . they are all in this book."

In a signed copy of his autobiography, Texas-born country "Outlaw" icon Waylon Jennings penned a personal note to his son Terry: "I did my best. Now it's your turn." Two decades later, Terry Jennings finally completes the true story of his father's remarkable, unvarnished life with Waylon: Tales of My Outlaw Dad.

Born when Waylon was only nineteen, Terry came of age just as Waylon's career hit the stratosphere with hits like "I've Always Been Crazy" and "Good Hearted Woman," one of his famous Willie Nelson duets. Terry dropped out of high school and joined his dad on tour, and the two became more like brothers than father and son. On the road, they toured with legends like Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and Jessi Colter, Waylon's fourth and final wife. Together father and son led a hard-partying lifestyle centered around music, women, and drugs.

Waylon's success--critical acclaim, bestselling albums, sold-out tours, and even TV stardom on The Dukes of Hazzard--was at times eclipsed by his demons, three divorces, crippling debt, and a depression that Terry traces to the premature death of Buddy Holly. (Waylon was supposed to be on Holly and Ritchie Valens's doomed flight.) Through it all, Terry worked on the touring crew, helped manage Waylon's career, and became one of his father's closest confidantes. Debunking myths and sharing incredible never-before-told stories, this book is a son's loving and strikingly honest portrait of his father, "the greatest Outlaw country musician to grace this earth" and an unlikely but devoted family man. Waylon: Tales of My Outlaw Dad will resonate for generations of fans.

Review
"Waylon Jennings and I first met in the mid '60s backstage at JD's in Phoenix. We would go on to record duets, write songs, cut records and tour together for over three decades. We had our differences, but our friendship always endured. I considered Waylon one of my best friends. Packed with funny, insightful tales of life on the road, this book is a terrific tribute, from a son to his father. A father who happens to be one of Texas and Nashville's greatest musicians. Every country music fan, Outlaw or otherwise, should have it on their shelf."―Willie Nelson

"I'm so excited about Terry's new book. Waylon Jennings has always been one of my favorite singers of all time. I loved his voice. He was completely different from anybody else. And I always wanted to either do a whole album with him or at least a duet song; but I never got the chance. That will always be one of my great regrets. Waylon was a wonderful human being as well. He reminded me very much of my own people in his tenderness, kindness, his understanding and his personality. I think of him often."―Dolly Parton

"I've played country music my whole life, and it's the evolutions (sometimes revolutions) that have ensured that it stays ever changing, ever growing, and constantly relevant. When I first heard Waylon sing the opening verse of 'Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way' it was like a mini sermon. It's also the first country song I played for my wife, and she was hooked immediately. As his son Terry wonderfully captures in this book, Waylon was an outsider trying to figure out how to be in a town like Nashville and stay true to his music and who he is. And, boy, can I relate to that. Waylon had a power, a gravitas to his music that hit me in a religious way. It was music where I could smell the beer soaked carpet, see the neon, feel the stomping and sliding of boots on hardwood floors, and almost taste the air thick with smoke, sex and whiskey. It's authentic, it's raw, and it's unapologetic in every way...and for a kid growing up on the other side of the world who never got to see Waylon 'live' or meet him, I feel like I've done both. God bless you Waylon ... and please know I'm taking great care of your leather-bound 1950 Broadcaster."―Keith Urban

"In his revealing new book, Waylon Jennings' son Terry discusses his father's legacy and what he really thought of the 'outlaw country' movement."―Wide Open Country

"Waylon: Tales of My Outlaw Dad is a quick, fun read that offers the reader an intimate look inside a world that doesn't exist anymore."―VICE

"[A] tender but lucid memoir that doesn't sugarcoat Waylon's raucous life"―Garden & Gun

By Tezca
This is an awesome book to have! I read it all in one day and it was great learning all those new stuff about Waylon. Definitely gives you another perspective about him and one part in the story reminded me actually of an fictional character in an Aztec West story cause *SPOILERS* he had the same kinda deal with his leg as the character had. I hope he didn't get teased about it as a kid or something.

Totally recommend this book 10/10

The Real Deal!
By A. Ayala
This is a GREAT book. I hate spoilers (even tiny ones) but I can say it has been one heck of an emotional roller coaster ride. I've laughed, I've sighed, wanted to punch something (or someone), and I've cried. It's INTENSE and I can't walk away from it. Who knew the son is as great of a storyteller as his dad was a singer/songwriter. Dee

Death Will Have Your Eyes: A Novel about Spies, by James Sallis

Mulholland Books takes pleasure in restoring to print an acclaimed novel of espionage and suspense by the author of Drive.
David (as he's currently known) was a member of an elite corps of spies trained during the coldest days of the Cold War. For almost a decade he has been out of the game, working as a sculptor. Then a phone call in the middle of the night awakens him: the only other survivor from that elite corps has gone rogue. David is tasked with stopping him.

What ensues is an existential cat-and-mouse game played out across the American landscape, through the diners and motels that dot the terrain like green plastic houses on a Monopoly board. Both a suspenseful novel of pursuit and a thematically rich exploration of the mind of a spy, Death Will Have Your Eyes is a contemporary classic of the espionage genre.

It's Camus+Conrad+Hammett+Le Carre = an existential spy-hunt
By jjwylie@intermind.net
A retired assassin, now an artist, gets a call he has dreaded for years. His former employers are reactivating him to hunt down a former colleague. But in the shadowy world of covert operatives, even the roles of hunter and hunted can shift without warning, and what ensues is a deadly dance along America's highways and through the psyche of a man whose carefully-constructed present has been shattered by his dangerous past.
Though it sounds like yet-another product of an oft-used premise (a la Le Carre), James Sallis's novel has more in common with the psychologically-complex narratives of Conrad, though this book is written in an understated and sparse prose reminiscent of the hard-boiled best of Dashiell Hammett's Continental Op. And as David (as we come to know the artist) grapples with the enigma of his own identity, given his secret past and his fragmented present, we get a dream-filled reworking of Camus' The Stranger, even to the resonant (but no less final) climax in the streets of New Orleans.
Think of it as an espionage thriller without all the geopolitical baggage that (more often than not) dates the hefty tomes of Forsythe, Ludlum, and Le Carre. Think of it as a hard-boiled road-mystery with the P.I. recast as a professional assassin. However you think of it, read Death Will Have Your Eyes.
It's a fast-paced death-trip you'll nonetheless enjoy.

Brilliant, existentialist spy story
By A Customer
This is not your average spy story. The characters are so real, they seem to be more than real in comparison with the flat characters in most books of this genre. Sallis writes with a unique style. The only way to fully appreciate it is, of course, to read this book. Do it today. I have recommended this book to all my friends - they agree.

Amazon.com Review
The "essence of the American desert," as the subtitle of Craig Childs's book has it, is water. A desert, by definition, lacks it, but when water does come, it comes in torrential, sometimes devastating abundance. Childs, a thirtysomething desert rat with a vast knowledge of the Southwest's remote corners, knows this fact well. "Most rain falling anywhere but the desert comes slow enough that it is swallowed by the soil without comment," he observes. "Desert rains, powerful and sporadic, tend to hit the ground, gather into floods, and are gone before the water can sink five inches into the ground."

The travels that Childs recounts in this vivid narrative take him from places sometimes parched, sometimes swimming, from the depths of the Grand Canyon to the dry limestone tanks of the lava-strewn Sonoran Desert. As he travels, Childs gives a close reading of the desert landscape ("the moral," he writes at one point, "is that if you know the land and its maps, you might live"), observing the rocks, plants, animals, and people that call it home. Some of his adventures will remind readers of Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire--save that Childs writes without Abbey's bluster, and with a measured lyricism that well suits the achingly lovely back canyons and cactus forests of the Southwest. By turns travelogue, ecological treatise, and meditative essay, Childs's book will speak to anyone who has spent time under desert skies, wondering when the next drop of rain might fall. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
Childs's obsessive quest to find, map, observe and get wet in the waters of America's deserts has personal roots. Born in the Sonoran Desert of West Texas, this naturalist, river guide and author of four previous books (most recently, Grand Canyon) grew up learning to revere water, that fickle, scarce, elemental sustainer of life. More than a fiercely lyrical travelogue through Arizona, Utah, the Grand Canyon and northern Mexico's cottonwood-willow forests, his hypnotic new book describes an existential adventure. Trekking for days or weeks, alone or with a companion, in search of random waterholes, rare creeks, waterfalls, springs, shrimp-filled pools and sudden, furious floods, Childs mingles personal observations with a cosmic perspective ("Most, if not all, water on this planet came from countless small comets thumping against the atmosphere... ") to make readers feel an integral part of earth's hydrologic processes. Far from being arid, his narrative ripples with adventure. He descends into a slot canyon full of 800-year-old handprints left by the Anasazi people; spots desert fish found nowhere else and believed to be holdovers from the Ice Age; survives an Arizona chubasco, a violent convective thunderstorm that rips roofs off buildings and creates myriad waterfalls. Childs's sources are diverse: conversations with archeologists, ecologists, ranchers, conservationists, geologists; Native American legends; tales of backpackers, explorers and illegal immigrants who fell victim to the desert; and a meticulous, 300-year-old desert map made by a Jesuit missionary from Spain. His highly personal odyssey combines John McPhee's gift for compressing scientific knowledge and Barry Lopez's spiritual questing. Five-city author tour.

From Library Journal
Over the course of two years, naturalist/ adventurer Childs took a series of month-long treks on foot through each of the North American deserts in search of water. An astute observer of nature and a concise writer with a knack for storytelling, he meticulously records each significant occurrence in an attempt to understand how the absence or presence of something most of us take for granted dictates life and death in the harsh environment. Highlights include terrifying accounts of flash floods and a fascinating cave exploration, complete with wet suits, deep in the Grand Canyon. Recommended for all regional and most natural history collections, although a bibliography would have been a useful addition.

A Fascinating Read!
By Kurt Harding
I've lived in the desert, I've hiked in the desert, I've camped in the desert and I've cursed the desert but nothing I have read before made me understand and love the desert like The Secret Knowledge of Water does.
Until I read Craig Childs' essay, I never gave much thought to water in the desert except that without it you die. Childs paints a vivid picture of the juxtaposition of desert and water in all of its manifestations. I can still picture the pools of water in the tinajas of the barren, sun-baked Cabeza Prieta and the thunderstorm-fed floods on the Arizona Strip. I can feel the terror he must have felt squatting on a ledge in a feeder canyon of the Grand Canyon as flood waters rose and swirled around him and his relief as they receded, leaving behind tons of debris. I can also feel his awe at the power and majesty of nature at the same time. I can feel his exhilaration as he bathes in a deep, cool waterpocket after a long day's hike. And I can sense his deep respect for the original peoples of the desert and how they have adapted to its caprice.
It is obvious from his style that Childs has an abiding love for the desert. If you know and love the desert, you will find The Secret Knowledge of Water a fascinating read and come away with new respect for the desert and for the waters which both nurture and shape it.

Desert solitaire . . .
By Ronald Scheer
This book by naturalist Craig Childs belongs on any Edward Abbey bookshelf, where writers have fallen in love with the desert Southwest and portray it eloquently on the printed page. Childs is more scientist than environmentalist, but he has Abbey's fascination with wilderness adventure, which takes him in search of what he regards as the most elemental aspect of the desert - the water to be found there. These searches take him far into remote areas of the vast Colorado River watershed, mostly in Arizona, including the canyons that feed into the Grand Canyon.

The book is divided into three sections: still water, streams, and flood. We discover that if one knows how to search for it - and the first inhabitants of these areas did know - there is water to be found in plentiful supply. Likewise, there are spring-fed streams that flow during certain seasons, and in and along both kinds of water there is a host of different life forms, plants and animals, each place representing a specific and evolving ecosystem. Childs' eye and ear for detail and his scientific knowledge join to create vivid accounts of the discoveries he makes as he explores. We learn, for instance, how pools of rainwater in the desert wastes become populated with forms of aquatic life and how these survive, even through long periods of extreme drought.

For me, a particularly harrowing adventure was his exploration of a system of caves from which a stream of ice-cold water emerges high on a canyon wall near the Grand Canyon. Others include his pursuit of floods in the making in this same system of canyons following summer cloudbursts, and he underscores the perilousness of his curiosity by describing the deaths of other hikers and campers taken by surprise by flash floods. Often he travels alone for days and weeks at a time; sometimes he takes along a companion. What he writes of his experiences is consistently full of wonder, as well as a realization that human interference with the natural order (pumping from aquifers, as just one example) is rapidly and permanently altering ecosystems that have adapted to the desert environment over millennia.

watch out for the floods
By A Customer
Secret Knowledge is an extremely descriptive first-person account of a traveler's journey though the desert in search of water and its associated experiences. Childs describes his locales with a variety of methods: use of metaphor, scientifically and spritually. He intertwines information from a number of scientific areas, including, biology, geology, anthropology, archaeology and of course hydrology. The only negative thing I could say was my desire to learn about more desert areas--his book limits the reader to the Grand Canyon and some areas of Arizona. Also, the book read so quickly--it ended and I wanted more. I guess I'll have to check out some of his other books.

The Good Girl's Guide to Negotiating: How to Get What You Want at the Bargaining Table, by Leslie Whitaker, Elizabeth Austin

Emphasizing what women bring to the table (such as listening skills and empathy) and teaching readers how to recognize and control traits that undermine their abilities (such as the tendency toward avoiding conflict or sending internal self-defeating messages), this unique guide instructs and inspires women to negotiate to their best advantage in any bargaining situation.

From Publishers Weekly
Whitaker, a reporter at Time and ghostwriter of The Beardstown Ladies' Commonsense Investment Guide, and Austin, a contributing editor at Self, know from firsthand experience that many women don't negotiate effectively. Whitaker says she never considered requesting more than a flat fee for her work on the Beardstown book, but later rethought her position when the book became a bestseller, reaping countless profits for the packager. Whether accepting a new job, closing a real estate deal or considering volunteer projects, women should not fall into common traps of giving up too easily, acting overly nice or selling themselves short, Whitaker and Austin urge. Writing in an upbeat style, the authors provide lots of morale-boosting examples of women who have managed to conquer their weaknesses and adopt winning negotiating strategies, along with studies demonstrating the differences between how men and women negotiate. Careful preparation, listening to the other party and patience are key negotiating strengths common among women, they say. They also offer many standard tips for specific situations, such as negotiating on the phone, advising women who need time to think out their negotiating strategy to simply say it's not a good time to talk and to call back when they're ready. (Mar. 6) Forecast: The message that women can be good girls but not end up as doormats may hit home for many readers, especially if the authors make their case on national television as planned. Still, given the competition, and the familiarity of much of the advice, the book's success is likely to be modest.

From Booklist
Journalists Whitaker and Austin, once victims themselves, now set the scene for win-win negotiations, and they impart their advice with a chuckle. Three powerful and natural female instincts, they say, can be deployed to best effect when negotiating: empathizing with the other side, listening to your opponent, and interpreting nonverbal cues. Plus, specific remedies are gladly given for such commonly negative negotiation events as car purchases, prenuptial agreements, and salary talks; and they even offer pointers on how not to cry (looking up at the ceiling is their major advice on that score). Start with baby-sitter bargaining--and graduate to practicing unlocking deadlocks. Barbara Jacobs

You Can Find Better Negotiating Books
By A Customer
Exhibiting all the traits of a "good girl" and fuming from my last job review, I thought this book would be a perfect weekend read. By the end, I was bored and this book has been tossed into my pile of rejected paperbacks.
This book is more successful in listing personality traits of a "good girl" rather than giving effective strategies that are sure to lead to bargain table success. There are some negotiating tactics, but they aren't anything new (listen, know how to say no, get things in writing, shop around, think before you sign, etc). Once I finished the book, I knew what made me a "good girl," I knew there were a lot of women like me, and I knew in what situations "good girls" failed, but I still didn't have an applicable strategy for remedying these issues.
For instance, the authors recommend researching your expected salary before negotiating your next job contract. This isn't new advice, and I still didn't know where to turn for this information -- coworkers, online, library? There are a few cases where the authors give resources -- but they are ones I am already familiar with or are too obscure to be useful (what numbers to call when barganing for a casket, find out what your car is worth with the kelly blue book).
And be forewarned, the entire book consists of hundreds and hundreds of anecdotes. It is the reader's responsibility to figure out how to apply other women's successes and pitfalls to herself. While sometimes entertaining, this approach is not going to transform a "good girl" into a negotiating shark.
There are few good points in this book but most of it is just common good sense.

Helpful information
By A Customer
My spouse and I used this book recently in buying our new minivan. The information about buying cars in the "Good Girls" book was very helpful in our negotiations with the car dealers. Using the tips in the book, we were able to get exactly what we wanted at a price well below sticker. The book made us much more confident in dealing with the sales people, and I felt that we were very well prepared, thanks to the information included in the book. This book isn't just for good girls, but for anyone who wants to learn how to negotiate better. I'm very glad this book came along just as we were buying a new car, and I think that it would be very helpful for anyone who will be buying a car, a new home, or doing anything that requires good negotiating skills.

Very Disappointing
By A Customer
The book tells you what women do wrong but it does not really teach you how to do it right. The authors interview a lot of people who may know something about the topic but they do not do so in depth. They then string together a lot of quotes without real analysis and practical how to. I should have known from the introduction that the authors were not experts in this area.

Detective Lindsay Boxer chases an elusive, possibly very dangerous suspect...her husband, Joe.

Lindsay Boxer has a beautiful baby daughter and a husband she loves unconditionally. She'd always been too focused on her career as a San Francisco police detective to wonder what domestic bliss might feel like, but now she knows, and she's never been happier. She can't imagine that a brutal murder at a luxury hotel, and the disappearance of a gorgeous blond woman from the scene, could have anything to do with her own life and marriage--yet soon both are unraveling, and Lindsay can't ignore disturbing clues that hit very close to home.

Just as bombs are starting to go off in her personal life, an explosive tragedy rocks San Francisco, plunging the city into chaos. Pressed into duty to investigate a criminal plot that stretches around the globe, Lindsay again finds herself following signs that lead to her own front door. Thrown into a tailspin and fighting against powerful enemies trying to protect their operatives and conceal the truth at all costs, Lindsay turns to the Women's Murder Club for help as she desperately searches for the elusive, and deadly, blonde before she loses Joe for good.

Filled with the pulse-pounding intrigue that has made James Patterson the world's #1 bestselling writer, 15th Affair is an emotionally charged story that proves all is fair in love, war, and espionage.

Not liking these cliffhanger endings ...
By Cubby
I've purchased each book in the Women's Murder Club series. All were a great read, with good writing, and we learned something new about each of the ladies and their relationships with each other, as well as some peeks into their lives. That is, up until 14. The story dragged a bit, focused mostly on Lindsey, and I HATED the ending!

I pre-ordered 15, thinking surely Patterson's and Paetro's exciting and page turning writing would return. I am sad to say that it didn't. It almost seems as if someone else is writing these books now, and they don't even know the characters! Entirely too much of Lindsey and Joe, in a situation that was hardly believable to those of us who have read each and every installment. No mention of what was happening in the lives of the other ladies, and the club was only together a couple of times - with no brainstorming to solve the murder mystery! The Lindsey and Joe drama was even the subject of their get-together. And, another cliffhanger ending. HATE IT!!

I truly hope that in 16, Patterson and Paetro will bring back the ladies - and their personalities! - that we've loved to read about, and knock off those endings! If it's not any better than 14 and 15, sadly, I may have to say a fond farewell to The Women's Murder Club series.

Learn how to end a book
By De gustibus disputandum non est
I think it is time for James Paterson to take a break on some island, read a couple of David Baldacci books and relearn how to write a book solo, with a beginning, a body, and an END. This book ended in a "mid sentence". I turned the page and found an advertisement for yet another book. Are the publishers, Paterson, and Kindle not making enough money that they cannot finish a book? No, the ending was not a cliff hanger. Why? There was no ending. I am not enticed to wait for number 16. In fact, I will wait for the paperback or the industrial reprinting. This was a ridiculous book with ridiculous plot.

I enjoy the women's murder club series, but this one should have been titled, "Lindsay Boxer, the soap opera. " or, "it's all about me, Boxer". After some initial violence, the story was all about Boxer and her marriage, nanny, and ....well that's all. At least it could have ended with a hint of closure. But, there was no ENDING.

The cost of the Kindle version was an embarrassment related to the quality of the book. Wait for the paperback, or just skip 15.

ABP on the actual Sgt. Boxer
By TravellingCari
I was very very close to giving this one star, but I can't do it. I love(d) Women's Murder Club. But this wasn't Women's Murder Club. It was the Lindsay Boxer soap opera and while I love Boxer, this was too much. I think we saw the Club all of three times and aside from a throwaway about Cindy trying on Julie for size, we really got no information. The high point of this series is them working together, not Linday's unraveling love life. I also seriously think the character has gone down hill since the ill-fated casting of Angie Harmon as her. I love Angie, but Boxer is blondie and that's a no. This book was so poorly written I wonder if Patterson actually wrote it since I like Maxine Paetro's writing and this one is just such a poor chapter in this series. It's also a horrible mish mash of British and American English. Maybe after 15 it's time for the series to go to bed as I also eventually thought Alex Cross ran out of gas.

Really? A SFPD Sergeant's husband is missing and she's not going to at least sort of look for him? Not a chance for the crusader of justice Boxer. The whole soap opera with Muller was pointless if you're not going to resolve it. The whole Four Seasons case was mostly left unresolved despite the bandaid they attempted to put over it during the girl talk in the car in Vancouver. Nope. Not buying it - and glad I didn't buy this book.
