Kindergarten-Grade 4-- This collection is clearly the product of editors and an illustrator who know poetry and appreciate its bone-deep beauty. Dyer's watercolors reflect the wonder in each selection. Imaginative as the poetry selections are, her pictures dance off the page. The book is divided into nine sections; each poem within each section seems exactly right, and all are timeless. Within the sections and between them, the poems flow seamlessly. The poets range over time, and include Stevenson, Milne, Lear, Janeczko, Ciardi, Livingston, and Bodeker to name a few. Three poems about night, set against a dark city skyline, are followed by four lullabies, including Jane Yolen's lovely ``Shepherd's Night Count.'' The book opens with a quote from Isak Dinesen: ``Why they should feel verse to be like rain I do not know. More like a ``second'' than a ``first book of poems,'' this large, generously illustrated volume will serve children from preschool through much of their elementary years. The Kennedys' combined experience as poet, educators, and writers is evident in the variety and depth of the selections here, topically grouped (``Play,'' ``Birds, Bugs, and Beasts,'' etc.) and ranging from the classical (Stevenson and Lear) through folk rhymes and songs to a good assortment of more recent poets (Langston Hughes, David McCord, N. M. Bodecker). The more than 100 poems also include a nicely varied sprinkling of Ogden Nash, Emily Dickinson, Dorothy Aldis, and numerous others, all illustrated in appealing, conscientiously multiethnic watercolors with an old-fashioned flavor (several recall Jessie Wilcox Smith or the Petershams) but with some contemporary touches as well. A Beautiful Anthology with a Wonderful Variety of Poems

This is a beautiful book both visually and in content. The watercolor illustrations are in the realistic style painted in fine detail. My daughter loves to look at the pictures closely as we read the poems aloud.
The poems selected cover a wide range of topics, themes, and moods. There are funny poems like limericks, serious poems about the seasons, poems about how children sometimes feel (such as the one about the boy who didn't do anything right yesterday, so he's not getting out of bed today) bedtime poems, and poems about child play.
This book was a gift and I love it so much I've since given it to other parents and children to enjoy. Everyone has been enthusiastic about it. When my daughter selects this book (which is often) it's fun for us to browse through the pages and pick poems based on the illustrations or on our mood. We'll say, let's read about sleepytime poems, or let's read funny poems. She never tires of this book. There are hundreds of poems to choose from, but the scope is not overwhelming either.
I give this book my highest recommendation. Every home should have some poetry on the shelf!

Great Book of Poetry For Children (and Parents)

Last night, my not-quite-three-year-old daughter spontaneously recited a couple dozen poems from this book to my wife and me. We were astounded. She's been requesting that we read TALKING LIKE THE RAIN to her day and night since I bought it last month, but we had no idea how deeply the poems had sunken in. What better endorsement can one give to such a book? We plan to buy several more copies as presents for my daughter's friends . . . and their parents.
X.J. Kennedy is a terrific poet as well as a top-notch editor. I highly recommend his own children's poetry books, particularly his irreverent BRATS, as well as his poetry books for adults, which include the excellent DARK HORSES and CROSS TIES.

Educators Recommend

The Kennedys have done a superb job in selecting the poems for this read-aloud. The titles run the gamut of sweetly simple (Langston Hughes' "Piggy Back"), to the powerful (Georgia Roberts Durston's "The Wolf").
There is something for everyone here. Readers will find old favorites-"The Purple Cow"-as well as a few not-so-well-known but soon-to-be favorites such as William Jay Smith's lovely and lyrical "Polar Bear."
The book is divided into nine, themed sections: Plays, Families, Just for Fun, Birds, Bugs, and Beasts, Rhymes and Songs, Magic and Wonder, Wind and Weather, Calendars and Clocks, and, finally, Day and Night.
Making their appearance are, among others, Robert Louis Stevenson, Joan Aiken, Jane Yolen, Gwendolyn Books, A. A. Milne, and Wallace Stevens.
Jane Dyer, as always, does a magnificent job with the illustrations. There are full-page pictures and spot art throughout, extending and enriching the text. Readers will want to linger over the realistic, charming watercolors.
Highly recommended.

This meticulously detailed, if partly speculative, account of an oxygen atom's life is aimed at a broad audience, but Krauss (The Physics of Star Trek, etc.), the department chair of physics at Case Western Reserve University, is likely to alienate some of his Trekker fans with his ungainly discussion of quantum mechanics. Several billions of years ago, the protagonist of this tale emerged from a dazzling explosion that resulted in a slight imbalance between matter and antimatter. Although it is unclear how this disparity came about, it produced all the matter that exists in the universe today. Deciphering what occurred amid the resulting primordial soup to fuse quarks into protons and unite them with neutrons and electrons will prove a strenuous task for the lay reader, but Krauss's muddled prose becomes much more lucid as his oxygen atom grows older, flitting in and out of emerging stars and young planets. The atom bears witness to many cosmic phenomena before settling into the hot, carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere of a budding Earth. Through an exploratory discussion of how life may have unfolded, the author's ripe imaginative powers and literary prowess come into play. Krauss presents a wealth of information that covers a range of disciplines (such as geophysics, biology and paleontology) and concludes with a glimpse of the future, where the forces that spawned life will destroy it. Although physics fans may rush to pluck this one off the shelves, they will find that the book's virtues lie in its vivid descriptions of an evolving planet rather than its scholarly discussions of particle physics. Nothing new, but well told

The idea of following the adventures of an atom from the Big Bang to far future certainly isn't new. David Darlings "Deep time: The Journey of a Subatomic Particle from the Moment of Creation to the Death of the Universe - and Beyond" (Delacorte, 1989) was there a decade ago. Still, Krauss tells a good yarn and has a chatty, user-friendly style that never lets his reader get too lost in the physics of this cosmic trek. Not perhaps for those who keep well abreast of the latest science, but a painless introduction to cosmology, quantum physics and the evolution of life for the neophyte.

An Oxygen Atom Tells It All!

Lawrence M. Krauss showed in _The Physics of Star Trek_ that he could nimbly handle the exposition of big ideas in physics. He has now picked perhaps the biggest assignment a science writer could tackle: the cosmos from beginning to end. In his audacious new book, Atom: An Odyssey from the Big Bang to Life on Earth... and Beyond (Little, Brown and Company), Krauss has hitched onto an oxygen atom from the very beginning and perhaps even to the end of it all, showing the history and destiny of matter. It is an exhilarating ride.
To take the start of the atom requires, of course, that Krauss explain about what went before. His explanation of Big Bang weirdness is as clear as one can get. He goes on to explain how both quarks and antiquarks were formed, with quarks in an almost inconsequential majority but enough to make all the matter we see around us now. It was an accident that things turned out so, and Krauss's history is a list of strings of accidents to produce a world we can't help but see as full of design and consequence. It is no surprise that throughout his pages he has exclamation points; his own surprise at all he describes is refreshing and sincere.
The oxygen atom which is the focus of this big story has to be traced to quarks, and then to the eight protons and eight neutrons that would make up its nucleus. The protons and neutrons in the oxygen atom weren't close originally. They may have been galaxies apart in the hydrogen and helium atoms that constituted all of the original universe, and that clumped together to make stars. These nuclear furnaces started churning out heavier elements, include our oxygen atom, which joined with a couple of hydrogens on a snowball traveling around our solar system. The comet crashed into Earth, the water became part of the ocean, the oxygen got to be part of the acid rain, and became incorporated into the mantle of the earth. Then it was gobbled by a microbe to start its participation in all the life cycles. Krauss speculates that long after the sun (and we) are gone, the oxygen atom will be speeding away, and maybe its protons and neutrons will wink away into even smaller dust.
Krauss's enthusiasm for his tale is wonderfully infectious: "Can each of the atoms in the air I breathe really have gone through hell and back, braved the bitter cold of space, the brutal heat of stars, have crashed into the Earth, have dredged down below the continents and ocean floor merely to rise again? Have these atoms been a part of countless lives and seen countless deaths? Will they travel throughout the cosmos that I would give my eyeteeth to explore?" This exciting view of the very strange cosmos we live, in seen through the vicissitudes of one atom, ought to be a science classic.

From the Big Bang to The End

Lawrence Karuss' "Atom" does a masterful job of reporting all the amazing numbers that govern the size and evolution of the universe, from Big Bang to Life on Earth to The End. He reports them in language that made me appreciate how big a number with a lot of zero really is. He follows one atom, from the Big Bang all the way through Life and beyond. He makes a lot of comments that give perspective on cosmic history and are funny too. His book encompasses physics, the development of the planets, and the causes of the origin of life -- an unusually large sweep for a book, but he pulls it off.

excellent and a different slant too

Someone was lamenting about the loss of open conventions and in a roundabout way I picked up The Making of the President 1960. It was great. I've always felt that 1968 was the greatest year in US History so I next grabbed The Making of the President 1968, even better. I had seen Kevin Costner in "13 Days" so by this time I had come across the names of Ken O'Donnell and Dave Powers so often I was like Butch and Sundance wondering "who are these guys". This book answers that question and so much more. It's an insiders view of the JFK from the non-political perspective and a fascinating read although the first chapter will, once again, crush your heart.

Alhough Kenny O'Donnell, co-author of JOHNNY WE HARDLY KNEW YE, admits that 60% of data and memories in the book belong to Dave Powers, he was elected as this bio's narrator. Kenny's technique is thus: "I recall when..." or "Dave says that..."

Intentional or not, the work has a stream-of-consciousness style filled with digressions. As illustration, its first long chapter, ostensibly about the fatal Dallas trip, includes timeouts for a Justice Dept. meeting on civil rights, LBJ's jealousy of Bobby and his dissatisfaction with being VP, memories of Sam Rayburn and Harry Truman, and so on.

There's hundreds of events covered in O'Donnell's breezy style, none more moving than this Zapruder-like passage, captured from Dave's and Kenny's limousine vantage point of ten feet behind Jackie and JFK during that tragic Dallas ride:

```I had just finished speaking when we heard shots, two close together and then a third one. There must have been an interval of at least five seconds before the third and last shot because, after the second shot, Dave said to me, "Kenny, I think the President's been shot."
```I made a quick sign of the cross and said, "What makes you think that?"
```"Look at him!" Dave said. "He was over on the right, with his arm stretched out. Now he's slumped over toward Jackie, holding his throat."
```While we both stared at the President, the third shot took the side of his head off. We saw pieces of bone and brain tissue and bits of his reddish hair flying through the air. The impact lifted him and shook him limply, as if he was a rag doll, and then he dropped out of our sight, sprawled across the back seat of the car. I said to Dave, "He's dead."

That's the passage we all searched for in bookstores 40 years ago, and as bitter a memory as it may be, these four paragraphs well illustrate Mr. O'Donnell's writing style. Details from JFK's life between 1946 and '63 are equally as vivid. Of the many works I've read on John Fitzgerald Kennedy, because of its first person knowledge and inviting prose, JOHNNY, WE HARDLY KNEW YE remains my favorite.

A good read!

Surprisingly entertaining book. My 7 year old couldn't get enough and we finished it in 1 day. The book is a great gateway to more sophisticated books (dd was reading books like Rescue Princesses before) as it introduces more challenging vocabulary and nuances to my dd while keeping her interested. We'll be getting the whole series!

Excellent writing in time for the Rio Olympics. I would cancel my trip and be too scared to go after reading this book. Fast paced with great characters! I got to see a side of Rio that I never knew about. Another winner in the Private series.

As always I love the Private series. The twists and turns are intertwined in the story and tied up at the end. I enjoy seeing more of Jack Morgan in the stories since it was his character that got me hooked on the series. I have to admit this was a little tearjerker that I was not expecting. I recommend this to anyone that likes thrillers.

While the title is similar in format and execution to that of Jean Marzollo's "I Spy" books (Scholastic), Steiner creates her own unusual look-alike worlds using everything from broccoli to razors to dominoes. Mousetraps are towers, crackers form the facade of a building, pretzels are seat backs, and a coffeepot is a train engine. Four-line verses challenge readers to find particular articles on each of the 11 double-page spreads. All of the objects are listed in the back and hard-to-find items ("for super-sleuths only") are highlighted with asterisks. Guaranteed fun.

Fascinating for all ages!

I haven't purchased this yet, just have the library copy here. I heard about the adult version when it first came out, but didn't know there was a Look-Alikes for kids. I don't know what the age recommendation on this it, but my 3 1/2-yr-old is absolutely fascinated by it! Guess what he's getting for Christmas! And since I love things like this, everytime he says, "Mommy, come look at my library picture book" I drop what I'm doing and sit down with him. To me, that is the ultimate compliment - this book has prompted me to sit and concentrate on spending time with my child more often, and that's priceless. And believe it or not, most of the objects in the pictures aren't that obvious to adults, so when I point them out to him (excited that I myself found them), he's absolutely delighted. We've tried to push toys on our son that are not passive, where he sits and watches a battery-operated thingy do whatever it does, toys that encourage active participation and imagination, and I can't imagine anything better than this book. Just my thought, but I think this book and the original Look-Alikes are invaluable tools for teaching people of all ages to thing outside the box, shift your perception, and that's something that's good for all of us! Guess you can tell that I can't say enough good things about this, Ms. Steiner is an absolute genius.

I think this works better as a coffee table book

I bought this book for my nephews and niece (ages 11, 9 and 4) who came to visit this summer. I was so excited at purchase! The incredibly clever scenes take hours to comb through, and you really view a lot of these objects differently after seeing the book. (Buildings made of fig newtons; thumbtack glassware at the soda fountain; an upside-down iron as a boat.)
However the actual children were a bit blown away. They looked at it and were interested, however many of the objects used were things they'd simply never seen and so couldn't pick out. What 4-year-old can tell that a bunch of tulips is really pistachios on sticks? Even the 11-year-old had never seen a flour sifter and therefore wasn't impressed by the sifter/water tower.
On the other hand, their mother (age 34) and my boyfriend (age 33) spent as many hours as I did on this book and are still delighted with it.
I personally collect beautiful children's books as a cost-effective alternative to coffee-table books. For my purposes, Look-Alikes is absolutely perfect.

Waaaay better than 'Where's Waldo"!

The pictures in this book are just stunning, and so clever. I've had this book for a year now (we keep it in our bathroom) and I've still not found everything!
Each photograph is magnificent, and well taken, while the collages - for want of a better name - are really ingenious. Some objects take forever to find - the peanut pony tail, the mushroom car tires, and some are perfectly obvious, though you'd never have considered that a disposable razor could look like a vacuum cleaner. It's beautiful to look at and fun to explore. If only Steiner had left it at that and not tried to write poetry to go with it. The rhymes are unbelievably inane and stilted and take away from rather than add to the book.
This edition may actually be too difficult for children, as many adults seem to have trouble finding all the objects. "Look-Alikes Jr." came out soon afterwards and is much simpler, though just as much fun; much more suited to the under 12's and the less patient!
This book will last so long and provide so much enjoyment that it's well worth buying for the whole family.

Not too many fantasy cliches that the author doesn't employ.

It is tough to argue that reading "Malice" doesn't feel like reading any of 5000 other fantasy novels of the last 30 years. Virtually every cliche, trope, meme, and standard plot device is thrown into the mix to create an overly long, unfocused muddle of a novel that really only becomes entertaining in the last 15% of the book.

The story, such as it is, is the story of many many characters. The "main" character Corban is on a typical boy to man fantasy journey. Other characters play out equally familiar tropes: prince rebelling against father (king); younger brother in shadow of older, more accomplished brother; girl with martial skills unappreciated except as a girl, etc. etc. The huge and scattered cast of characters is, I presume, the reason for the incredibly presumptuous comparison of this work to "Game of Thrones". Never has a critical comparison been further from the mark.

"Malice" possesses none of the originality, delightful characterization, nor even the real evil of the "bad guys" and gals of Westeros. Instead, all the evil of Malice is immediately reduced to the banal combination of insecurity and jealousy. No character has a flaw greater than envy. Which makes the whole thing pretty uninteresting.

The backstory is equally weak: some war between what could loosely be described as a god and a devil, complete with angels and demons. Magic is rarely present, and pretty tangential to the story and the world. What could be the more interesting elements (the society and role of the giants, the hidden city of the sword masters) are mentioned only in passing and with little to any authorial interest.

As a result, the whole reads as rather an muddled mess. With so many characters, and so few that we want to root for (and so few that we really care enough about to hate) the story meanders without focus for the vast majority of the very long novel. And when the pace and story do finally start to move at about the 85% mark, the only real conclusion is a cliff hanger--a heavy handed attempt to get the reader to buy the sequel (2 of how many? 3? 5? 10? neither the author nor the publisher will say). I for one will not be sticking around to find out. A near total miss that does absolutely nothing to distinguish itself from a myriad of competitors in the fantasy genre, nor from mediocrity itself. Yeuch.

Joins my top 10 epic fantasy series

What struck me the most is that everything that happens seems to have great portent, even long before the effects of the event or action are felt. That's John Gwynne's genius as a writer (exquisite plotting), as are his intense character studies. You get to know every player inside and out, and see their development throughout the unfolding of the story, which is a coming apocalypse type of tale. Lots of action, and very well described. It's mostly battle with swords and axes and spears, with just minor magic going on at this point. The political intrigue between kingdoms is intense. But it seems like magic will become prevalent in the future books as more powerful beings and forces are introduced.

It's a big story, with many kingdoms and a huge cast. Even so, Gwynne keeps you informed as to who and what they are throughout so you're never lost, as with Malazan. Another cool thing is that many of the protagonists are far more than they initially seem, and their pasts and previously unknown skills are divulged only when needed. Again, excellent plotting.

This is so obviously a classic in the making that I highly recommend it to all fans of Abercrombie and Erickson and Martin. The action is like Abercrombie, and the scale is like Erickson and Martin. I bought the sequel, Valor, the moment I was finished.

some elements worked for me but there were a lot of tropes

I have a divided opinion about this book. On one hand, it is a stereotypical coming-of-age fantasy novel (at least with respect to the POV character Corban, who starts the book as a young man and becomes a young warrior by the end). There are several other POV characters, but I think I enjoyed Corban's the most -- even though it has all the standard tropes (e.g., older boy who is a bully who forces a confrontation, man with a mysterious past who teaches Corban the use of a sword, scary healer lady who turns out not to be so bad, making friends with a couple of misfits, etc.). Other characters in Corban's storyline include his parents, his sister, and the royal family of the country where he lives (the King and Queen and their daughter, Princess Edana, seem to hang out at various spots in the town and there's not much separation between them and the regular residents).

Other POVs: Kastell, a warrior who really just wants to avoid confrontation with his cousin. I wish he did more things in this book. He gets a lot of time on the page but not much seems to happen for him. I am hoping he will be more important in book two (so I feel like I didn't waste my time). Veradis, a younger son of a lord who joins the warband of his crown prince (Nathair) to make a name for himself. Nathair is convinced he's a prophesied individual who will lead the armies of Elyon (the "good" god in the series) to victory in a war against evil. We also hear from Cywen, Corban's sister, but only a little, and one or two other characters who happen to be present in scenes where none of our other main characters are around. I do think the viewpoint characters have distinct personalities, but some of them are more compelling than others (but occasionally, there are random POV switches in the middle of scenes, which is a little jarring). And I think they mostly have suitable flaws and I am seeing some growth with a few of them (I think Veradis shows the least growth but I have a feeling he'll have a transformation in a later volume).

I think the number of characters is suitable for a story with this scope. I can't keep track of all the lands and their various kings and queens all the time, but I *can* remember which ones are which during any given conflict in the book. I know which side the main characters are on, and that's enough for me in the lead-up to or aftermath of a battle. Alliances shift a lot in this book, anyway, so that's really all you need.

There's no way to get around it, this book is predictable. Corban gets a pet and a scenario ensues that reminds me of a combination of the fates of Sansa's and Arya's dire wolves from Game of Thrones. (Not a spoiler as the outcome doesn't precisely match either.) I am pretty sure I can see the outcome of Nathair's/Veradis's storyline, of what will happen with Princess Edana, etc.

Pacing was a little off. I felt like a lot of early stuff was slow. Corban isn't a warrior yet, Kastell is avoiding his cousin, Veradis is rising through the ranks of Nathair's warband. It took me awhile to get through the first 3/4 of the book or so due to pacing issues. But then I finished the book off quickly after that, because the pace really picked up and the conflict became a little less trope-like. I had been on the fence about going straight to volume 2 or waiting for awhile but I think I will pick up the next book within a few days, now.

The world is pretty familiar and you can supply a lot of your own details if you've read much fantasy. The kingdoms appear to be small and controlled by a quasi-feudal system (most of the characters are townspeople and not serfs). For the most part, numbers of soldiers available seem not outrageous. I rather like the religious system -- there are prayers and myths and such, but not much in the way of other trappings. (I get rather annoyed at elaborate fantasy religions that have to be explained in detail. I picked up what I needed from the story, here.) I don't remember any outrageous infodumping, but there were some tantalizing hints about various characters' pasts. I feel like that struck a good balance.

I don't remember much about the writing style. There were some annoying elements in the prologue where a line of dialogue by a second character responding to a first character was not always on a new line of the page. This led to some confusion (almost as if people were talking to themselves). But this stopped after awhile. I liked the prologue here. It relates to the story but it takes awhile to see how it ties in. It's relevant both to the characters we get to know in this book and also to the overall storyline (which is rare for a prologue in fantasy).

If you enjoyed Brian Ruckley's Godless World trilogy, this has a similar feel to it (at least the initial volumes). The other book this reminded me of is Miles Cameron's "The Red Knight." This book focuses less on the nitty-gritty details of putting on armor and such, but it's kind of big and sprawling in the same way, and things about Nathair in this volume remind me of Jean de Vrailly in Cameron's book. Or, if you liked this book and haven't read those, consider them recommendations.

In the end, it was the ending of this book that redeemed it for me. The characters are good, too, if a bit formulaic. And there were smaller elements (religion, prologue, etc.) that worked for me. If you have read a lot of fantasy, it certainly won't be anything new. But I thought it showed enough promise to continue with the series (and sooner, rather than later).

Loving, joyful adoption story - highly recommended

As the adoptive mom of a six year old adopted from China almost five years ago, I have been looking for a book to share with my daughter that could evoke the feelings we have about her special place in our lives. This comes very close. The story of this adoption journey to China rings true -- it is based on the author's own experience. Lewis' text is loving and joyful --tinged with the longing and sadness that is often part of adoptions. An essential element of this book and one that I especially appreciate is the author's mention of her feelings for her daughter's Chinese mother. We have read and re-read "I Love You Like Crazy Cakes" at our house and it has sparked very necessary and important discussions with our daughter. Dyer's lovely watercolor illustrations are charming --and add to the warm loving tone of the story - it's just wonderful!

Beautifully written with Exquisite Illustrations

"I Love You Like Crazy Cakes" became an instant favorite in our house from the moment we opened it. My 6-year-old daughter, adopted from China, has not expressed a lot of interest in hearing her adoption story-- until we brought home this book. The sweet story and delightful illustrations have made it easier for her to understand her story and we read it together several times a week. It's also a great book to peruse by myself when I want to reflect on the experience of adopting from China. I highly recommend this book!

An Excellent Addition to Any Family's Library

One of my favorite roles as a parent is introducing my children to families of many types. In "I Love You Like Crazy Cakes", my children can understand that sometimes Mommys and Babies become a family by being united via airplanes and adoption officials and guess what? The amazing love is the same.
I especially loved that the author shared the gratitude and love for the "other" mother who provided the gift of this baby into her life. Beautifully stated and at times, overlooked.
The illustrations must be mentioned also: they are stunningly beautiful with the emotions of the subjects literally entering my heart from the page.
