Kimberly and Ann are not thrilled with Lurlene, the geeky new girl at school, but their opinions quickly change when they realize she is an equally good speller and find themselves competing together at the National Spelling Bee.

From Publishers Weekly
Conflicts multiply as three eighth-grade classmates vie to make it to the Colorado state spelling bee. Will the winner be Kimberly with the pushy parents and brilliant spelling ability? Or Ann, whose secure world has been shaken by her parents' rancorous divorce? Or Lurlene, the miserably out-of-place, home-schooled student from South Dakota who wears braids and knee socks? Actually, this is just the scaffolding of this minor but solid book, whose interior plot has far more to do with trying to spell out feelings than spelling words. Peters (The Stinky Sneakers Contest) skillfully interweaves the competition with a story of friendship and shifting alliances. Ann, asked to show Lurlene around, first tries to think of ways to escape the odd, clumsy new girl. But when everyone ridicules Lurlene as a "geek," Ann realizes not only who her own real friends are, but that she can be a better person than she imagined. Believable dialogue testifies to the casual cruelty and stumbling kindnesses of middle-schoolers, as well as their saving humor. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8?A clever title, snappy dialogue, and common middle-school problems make this an appealing read. Two eighth-grade best friends have been competing for years in school, county, and state spelling bees. Their dream: to compete together in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Despite eating lunch in the school cafeteria daily with their dictionaries open and quizzing each other nightly, the two haven't quite been labeled full-fledged nerds by their peers. A new girl, however, has. Ann, the narrator, is assigned to show the newcomer around. She ends up not only befriending the misfit, but also "de-geeks" her and discovers in her a potential champion speller. Of course, the thorny problem of a threesome now thickens the plot. Although Peters paints her characters in broad strokes, she manages to skirt creating stock stereotypes by introducing compassion and wit into their personalities. The thoughts and attitudes of the narrator are especially well developed. There's a proper sprinkling of current slang and references to move the story along. A breezy, satisfying read with a not-so-subtle message about fitting in, acceptance, and friendship.?Harriett Fargnoli, Great Neck Library, NY
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-7. Best friends Ann and Kimberly are spending every spare moment of eighth grade drilling each other in preparation for the county spelling bee--both hoping to qualify for state competition. Then Ann is asked to befriend geeky new student Lurlene, who turns out to be a dynamite speller. As Ann gets to know and like Lurlene, Kim feels threatened, and Ann must juggle her loyalties. She undertakes the "de-geeking" of Lurlene, and is dismayed to lose Kim's friendship altogether. Ann's dry humor in dealing with her own feelings and the conflict between her two friends makes an enjoyable, realistic story. The suspense builds until all three girls end up together at the state contest. This is a funny, wonderfully written tale about friendship and competition, with secondary messages about parents and families dealing with divorce. Susan DeRonne

This book is about how a new girl came to school, and another girl taught her how to not be a geek anymore. It turned out that that girl turned out to win the State Spelling Bee.

The Highway Kind: Tales of Fast Cars, Desperate Drivers, and Dark Roads: Original Stories

Thrilling crime stories about cars, driving, and the road from the world's bestselling and critically acclaimed writers.
Like fiction, cars take us into a different world: from the tony enclaves of upper crust society to the lowliest barrio; from muscle car-driving con men to hardscrabble kids on the road during the Great Depression; from a psychotic traveling salesman to a Mexican drug lord who drives a tricked-out VW Bus. We all share the roads, and our cars link us together.

Including entirely new stories from Michael Connelly, C.J. Box, George Pelecanos, Diana Gabaldon, James Sallis, Ace Atkins, Luis Alberto Urrea, Sara Gran, Ben H. Winters, and Joe Lansdale, THE HIGHWAY KIND is a street-level look at modern America, as seen through one of its national obsessions.

How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell
By Stephanie Tiner
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the third is a hero among vikings, but how does one become a hero? He wasn't always a hero. When Hiccup was a young boy, no one would have pointed him out as a potential hero. Being the son of the chief was hard enough, but Hiccup had it even worse. He wasn't muscular, popular, or mean, all traits valuable to a viking. But he was smart. Now he must capture a dragon or risk being exiled from the island of Berk. Can Hiccup survive the tests and become a full on member of the Hairy Hooligans.
I am a major fan of the Dreamworks Animation version of How to Train Your Dragon. When I got my copy of the book, I could hardly contain my excitement. Of course, I had to wait to read it because I already had books on my stack that I had agree to read as soon as possible.
So, of course, you can imagine my surprise when the book, the one that inspired the movie, was nothing at all like the movie. In fact, the only thing that they seemed to have in common with each other was the names of the characters.
That said, this book wasn't too bad. Due to the fact that these are two completely different stories, I was, eventually, able to separate the story I was reading from the movie that I love. (Though the differences between the Toothless from the movie and the one from the book made it exceptionally hard.)
I was highly disappointed that this was not the story that I thought it was, but when I managed to get over that, I found the book to be pretty interesting.
The writing is simple, like you would expect for a book targeting young teenagers and pre-teens. The story line isn't all that exciting but does have a deal of childish humor.
The characters are hard to connect to, at least for me, a younger reader may have more luck. They also appear over exaggerated, thought that can be a good thing for a middle grade book, and in this case I am inclined to believe that it is. That said, they do face issues and conflict that young teens face in real life, and they go about dealing with it in the way that most parents would encourage. Especially that of acceptance.
In the end, though I wouldn't classify this book as great, it was an interesting read. I would not recommend it to die hard fans of the Dreamworks movie How to Train Your Dragon, but I would say it is a very good book for most young teens.
I bought my copy of this book form bookoutlet.com

Great Book! But.......
By yukifan01
This is a great book to read, my sister and I enjoy it very much. But.... the description here on Amazon advertises a FULL SIZE poster. If you look at the front of the book it says "poster inside", nothing about it being full sized. In everyone's eyes, a full-sized poster are the big 2x3 foot posters you find in Walmart, not the little 8x10 inch (roughly) poster.

I did not buy it on amazon so i am rating it as the book sold itself on the shelf. I saw the "poster inside" ad on the front, saw the poster and dismissed it because I was not buying it for the poster. I was buying it because I have yet to buy the books and this included two new ones that are not in a book by themselves yet.

Brilliantly insightful book!
By Kate McMurry
Dr. O'Connor served for 14 years as executive director of the Northwest Center for Family Service and Mental Health, a private, nonprofit mental health clinic in Litchfield County, Connecticut, overseeing the work of twenty mental health professionals in treating almost a thousand patients per year. He is a practicing psychotherapist, with offices in Canaan, Connecticut, and New York City. ....In his biography on this site, he states that he believes "depression can never be fully grasped by mental health professionals who have not experienced it." In Dr. O'Connor's case, as a therapist, he has a unique and powerful perspective because he is the son of a depressive who committed suicide, has suffered depression himself, and applied the insights presented in his book in his own life to heal his depression.
This book is very well-written, clear and accessible even when the doctor is talking about complex, professional issues in the mental health community. There is a thorough index and plentiful endnotes, as well as a very complete bibliography of recommended reading. The four sections of the book listed in the table of contents are: What We Know about Depression; Learning New Skills; Putting the Skills to Work; A New Synthesis.
I believe this is one of the top books ever written on depression. If you only have time to read one book on the subject, I would heartily recommend you make it this one, because it is utterly brilliant. I personally believe that one of the most profound things a theorist can do is synthesize seemingly opposing or unlike ideas, pulling them together in a comprehensible whole, which is what Dr. O'Connor does so very, very well here. He has thoroughly surveyed the existing information on depression, made clear what we know and don't know about it, and what most often works, or doesn't work, to treat depression.
In this regard, his discussion of why we don't have a comprehensive theory of depression at the present time is wonderful. Within this discussion he states: "The Freudian theory of human functioning has been on its last legs for some time, and we wait for a new theory, a new paradigm, to replace it….[A]lthough there is a wish to achieve a biochemical theory of human behavior, our current knowledge leaves us far from it; and if we had it, it would not answer our most interesting human questions."
He covers the effects of trauma on depression and the biological basis of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, manic depression and major depression and how this conception removes stigma. Then he asserts that though symptoms of mental illness are "biochemically mediated, that doesn't make [them inevitably] biochemically caused…." He is not anti-medication, but he states that medications can't tell us how to raise healthy children, make difficult decisions, or help us find meaning in life. He believes that "both nature and nurture play a part in the development of depression"--and in its cure. He states that "in depression, you use medication to help alleviate the pain and suffering, but the patient may still feel a lack of confidence, be painfully shy, lack assertive skills, have a distorted self-image…procrastinate…be stuck in a loveless marriage or a dead-end job. The patient must address these kinds of issues…or else he may suffer less but still not be part of life."
It is this issue that the book addresses very thoroughly: how to engage in a deliberate skill-building program in conjunction with medication (or without it if you are one of the unlucky, sizeable percentage of depression sufferers diagnosed with "resistant depression" because antidepressants do not work for you). In his skill-building program, the author covers emotions, behavior, thinking, relationships, the self, and aids to recovery. He then discusses how to put these new skills to work on the job, in intimate relationships and in the community at large.
An extremely thorough, comprehensive, invaluable guide!

Thoughts and Actions That Can Overcome Depression
By Donald Mitchell
The author is quick the point out (and he is correct) that this book will not improve or cure depression by itself. You need professional help for that. Instead, the purpose of this book (which it magnificently addresses) is to describe what the depressed person and the depressed person's family and friends need to be doing to provide the maximum likelihood of overcoming depression. That's a reasonable promise and premise for a book on this important subject, and you can begin to overcome your ignorance (and the harm it can bring) by reading this book and acting on its advice.
First, the bad news. Depression is increasing. Worse still, the younger someone is, the more likely that the person will experience depression sometime. Even worse, many people are undiagnosed, and suffer alone with their affliction.
Second, the good news. Around 70 percent of all those suffering from depression will improve with either drug therapy or mental health treatments. Those who get both do even better.
Third, more bad news. Depression tends to recur for many people.
The voice addressing these issues is an expert one. He is a psychotherapist who runs a community health center. More importantly, he has suffered from depression himself. I doubt if you can get more direct access to what depression is all about than from Richard O'Connor. I admire his caring to share so much of his own pain with us, and respect him enormously for this gift he has given us all.
Depression is currently under reevaluation. No single paradigm seems to capture all of its elements. Undoubtedly, an improved scientific model for it will emerge. There are signs that it can have roots in disturbed relations between Mother and child, family dysfunction, possibly genetic disorders of brain chemistry (like using up seratonin too rapidly), other traumas, and poor thinking habits. Who knows what else may turn up?
Many people try to deal with this problem too much on their own. Families often put up with the depressed person's behavior, not knowing what else to do. Others reject the depressed person, which will usually make the situation worse. O'Connor lays out common sense guidelines that should make a diference: for depressed people, for those who care about them, and for those who treat them.
The author sees depression as a disease and as a social problem, "an illness to be treated professionally and a failure of adaptation that we must overcome through self-determinination." He outlines important principles for the depressed person: (1) Feel your feelings (depression is the suppression of feelings -- acknowledging those feelings often causes depression to improve). (2) Realize that nothing comes out of the blue (your depressed state has a root cause that you should look for in an event or situation). (3) Challenge your depressed thinking by questioning your assumptions, especially ones that center on meaningless perfectionism. (4) Establish priorities so that your energies go into what will be on what's most important to you. (5) Communicate as directly as possible to everyone around you. Depressed people are often poor communicators who don't get their emotional needs served. With better communication, they can experience a more supportive emotional environment. (6) Take care of your self. Learn to enjoy yourself. (7) Take and expect the right responsibility for yourself -- for your own actions. Depressed people often feel guilty about things that they have no responsibility for (like the death of a parent or the divorce of their parents). (8) Look for heroes. These role models can empower you to see the way to improve, especially if they were also depressed like Lincoln. (9) Be generous. Helping others puts your own situation into perspective. (10) Cultivate intimacy. This means letting down your defenses so people can see you as you are, and accept you for that. Depressed people often feel disgusted with their true selves, and hide that self from everyone. (11) Practice detachment. Depressed people are often overly critical and pessimistic. Seeing things in the proper perspective can heal a lot of inappropriate pain. (12) Get help when you need it. This may be the most important piece of advice since so many people do not.
The book is filled with personal examples and case studies of people the author has treated, which help make the points easier to understand.
I was astonished to realize that there is no self-help network like there is for alcoholics and those with other mental and behavioral problems. The author shares some experiences with having established such groups that can be a prototype for creating such a network in the future. I think that is an important priority for improving the mental health of our society from what this book shares.
Mental health professionals will find good advice for overcoming the parochialism of whatever discipline they originally trained in, to create links to the other treatments the depressed patients need. Those who provide therapy discussions will benefit from the author's own assessments of how therapies helped or did not help him. The therapist as caring adult is emphasized above the particular technique used.
I was fascinated by how often this book pointed out problems related to stalls that most people have such as poor communications, procrastination, misconception, disbelief, tradition, independence, purposelessness, wishful thinking, and avoidance of the unattractive. The depressed person seems to have more of these at the same time than the people I work with. Yet both groups have in common that they have not yet learned the stallbusting techniques that can improve or overcome these stalls. To some extent, the lack of understanding of how to focus our minds is one of the causes of depression in our society. So here is another reason to learn the questions and focus that can enormously improve personal and organizational effectiveness. I rate this book a 2,000 percent solution stallbuster, and hope that you will read it and apply its lessons. Whether you are depressed or not, we all will encounter depressed people and this book can make us more helpful to them.
Since reading this book, I have been greatly helped by it in understanding the depressed people I know. Following the advice here, they have made progress in moving away from depression. I am very grateful for having obtained this valuable knowledge.
Help everyone to walk, look, and feel on the bright side!

a good book to start with
By A Customer
If you have just been diagnosed with depression, or someone who is close to you has, and you just want an overview of what depression is all about, then this is a good book to read as a first step. It brings together a lot of valuable general information and is written with experience and compassion. It will be of help to you if you are mildly depressed or even if you are merely unhappy with your life, but if you are a sufferer of major depression, this book is just not specific enough, it is too simplistic, and it does not contain anything new. There are chapters in the middle that discuss things like families, love, marriage, divorce, etc, that are in my opinion quite irrelevant.
The author admits that there is no one definite theory of the cause and treatment of depression, and so attempts to cover all the different approaches and put them together as package. This approach, whilst valid in theory, can be an overwhelming burden to juggle for a depressed person, who is made to feel that if he/she is not doing it all perfectly - keeping a mood journal, keeping a daily record of dysfunctional thoughts, eating well, in intense therapy, analyzing everything, etc - then he/she is not doing all they can to get well and this can make a depressed person feel a lot of needless guilt. I am very sceptical of this catch-all approach, it puts too much pressure on a depressed person for not nearly enough of a gain in their recovery. This approach will often make a depressed person feel that if they cannot manage all this constant self-actualization and exercises and analysis, etc (which they often can't - because they are depressed) that it then must be their own weakness making them depressed; this is extremely counter-productive. It is also unfortunate because some of the techniques can be of some help, but not if they are simplified and all jumbled together.
Having said all this, I do appreciate what the author is trying to do. This book is useful if you take from it what you think can help you right now, doing only what you can and want to, leaving the rest for another time. It won't change your life, but it will get you started and point you in the right directions for further help.

On the Road
By M. Allen Greenbaum
Cute.

Not too cute, but just the right amount of cute in this funny, beautifully illustrated, award-winning book about a boy who goes bike-riding with his imagination.

Our young, nattily dressed (great hat!) hero takes out his training-wheeled green and red bike, with his stuffed teddy bear. Somehow, that bear becomes a gigantic real bear, and the humongous real bear rides his own tiny little yellow bicycle along side the boy.

The wise boy explains (and the illustration show) traffic rules that he follows whenever he rides (and there are some useful ones: watching for opening doors, looking both ways, etc.). The bear does not follow the rules. He gets into accidents and mishaps, but his size and the author's good taste keep him from any trips to the hospital. Author McLeod and illustrator McPhail manage to show the danger without scaring us, and, indeed, with a bit of humor.

This is an enormously appealing little book. The symmetrical structure contrasting the boy's cautious, safe ride, versus the bear's slapstick miscues. This organization and the single sentence in each two-page example clearly explain each imp0rtant rule of the road. The illustrations by the renowned McPhail are warm and welcoming, soft and soothing, yet funny. You don't have to know how to ride a bike to enjoy this masterpiece of simplicity and imagination.

My kids and I love this book
By K. Friend
I got this out of the library two weeks ago, and my two children, ages 4 and 2, have made me read it to them at least twice a day. They really like the story of the boy who goes for a bike ride and brings along his teddy bear. However, the teddy turns into a real bear who definately does not follow the rules of the road. We all laugh at the scenes of the boy acting sensibly (stopping when others are walking in front of him, maneuvering around garbage cans and open car doors) and of the bear plowing ahead and into all of these things. It's sweet and funny, and can also double as a safety lesson for beginner bicycle riders.

Clever story, beautifully illustrated
By A. Costa
My twin boys (22 months) continue to laugh hysterically at this book and somehow I haven't gotten tired of it yet. Wonderful illustrations with a very nice close. A bit of cartoonish violence(bears on bicycles running into mailmen) might put it in the not-for-everybody category, though.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Sixteen-year-old Avery Roe's destiny is to become the next witch of Prince Island. It's the 1860s and Avery is descended from a long line of witches that use their magic to keep the island's whaling men safe at sea. When the protagonist turned 12, before fully unlocking her magic, her mother dragged her away from her training at her grandmother's cottage to raise Avery in town to be a proper society lady without magic. A Roe witch cannot be killed but can be maimed. Avery's once-beautiful mother was severely beaten and left with a devastating facial scar before Avery was born. To protect Avery from this fate, her mother cast a spell that prevents the girl from ever leaving town to see her grandmother. The teen has the gift of accurately interpreting dreams. After repeatedly dreaming of being a slaughtered whale, Avery knows her fate and despairs of ever escaping to fully master her magic and prevent her death. Then she meets tattooed Tane, a harpooner from an island near New Zealand, who comes looking for answers to help him avenge his murdered family. He believes his powerful magic can help Avery break her mother's spell. Kulper's debut seamlessly blends fantasy elements with the more realistic life of a whaling settlement during the 19th-century. This unusual fantasy isn't a quick read. It's long and the characters are not instantly likable, but they do grow on patient readers because the author portrays them as real, flawed, and multidimensional; teens will learn to love and root for them.—Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton

A Promising Debut, but Lacking in Magic and Marred by Instalove
By DawnTeresa
Salt & Storm reminds me of a certain classic novel about a white whale and a man’s obsessive quest for revenge. Yes, I mean Moby Dick. And no, that’s not necessarily a good thing. Let me briefly tell you how I feel about Moby Dick. While it was ultimately memorable, the novel was so thorough in its research and realism that it bogged me down and made me dizzy, sick, and bored with its endless chapters on whaling and blubber in descriptive, non-glorious detail. And let’s not even talk about Ahab. I always wanted to know more about Ishmael and less about Ahab. But that would have been another story. While some scenes in Moby Dick are harrowing and powerful, for me the emotional impact was marred by both my lack of connection to the characters and the slogging pace created by the huge asides in which Melville proved he was worth his salt.

So how is Salt & Storm like Melville’s “Great American Novel”? Well, I’m not saying it’s classic literature. It’s decidedly not. However, the author has done her research on whaling and magic in order to make the world of Prince Island seem real. In that she has succeeded. Tane, the island-boy love interest of heroine Avery Roe, initially focused on avenging the death of his family, is for a time Kulper’s own Ahab in miniature. Avery and Tane even have a discussion about the inadequacy of revenge. Interestingly enough, Avery’s words to Tane about revenge are both more convincing and more meaningful than any on-page romance between the two. And therein lies one of the main rubs. When the plot begins to focus more on romance than mystery and intrigue, there is little satisfaction for the reader. The romance is classic insta-love at its best. Though, just as I found Ishmael more interesting than Ahab, I eventually wanted to know more about secondary character Tane than protagonist Avery Roe.

While Kulper serves up plenty of salty sea air and atmosphere, she never comes through with the seemingly promised magic. If you are reading this book hoping for a little bit of Salem-ish witchery, you’ll be sorely disappointed. At novel’s beginning, you are hooked by young Avery’s telling of a story of when her grandmother allowed her to sit in and “help” as she magically tied the winds. And when Avery is forcibly removed from her home and her loving grandmother by her “evil” mother, you want nothing more than for Avery to break her mother’s curse and get back home to her grandmother and the magic that is her birthright.

Avery, who knows no magic but has the gift of interpreting dreams, is thrust together with Tane, who has come to her for answers about his dreams in order that he may avenge his family’s murder. Avery, desperate to awaken her own magic, has had dreams herself foretelling her own fated death. Once the plot moves past Avery and Tane telling dreams and trying to break the curse, it peters out into a story which bears little resemblance to the story I anticipated.

Don’t get me wrong. Salt & Storm shaped into a book with more depth and complexity than I thought it would. It turned out to be a story about choice versus determinism, a tale about love in many shapes, shades, and sizes, a tale about family and gender, a discussion of sacrifice and courage. There are elements of Salem thrown in to be certain, and there are some spine-chillingly memorable scenes. However, the novel’s greatest shortcoming is that it does not establish a meaningful emotional tie between the reader and Avery. Any feelings I began to have at the outset faded when the novel’s romantic portion didn’t take hold, and finally, I felt duped by the author. When the story began pulling the wool from the reader’s eyes by uncovering previously unseen truths, the narrative reveals undercut the reliability of the narrator, severing the already weak ties I had to Avery. To use a nautical analogy, I was left adrift in the story with no emotional mooring or compass.

Two final words on the novel’s flawed execution. One: Third person narration might have been more effective than the first person which was used. First person narration can be powerful, but it’s actually much more difficult to pull off than people think. Debut authors often fall short. Two: Never underestimate your reader. Kulper’s narration suffers from repetitiveness. She writes something, makes a point, then later reminds you of what she’s written by telling you again, until it begins to feel that you are being told both what to think and what to feel. I believe this is what people speak of when they say that a book tells rather than shows. Perhaps we could have been shown more had the novel been related by an omniscient third person narrator. Alas, we shall never know. That ship has sailed. And sunk.

Verdict: 3 of 5 Hearts. A Promising Debut, but Lacking in Magic.Salt & Storm gets the reader’s hopes up for a magical tale of witchcraft and romance. Unfortunately, it falls somewhat short in both areas leaving the reader adrift.

Kendall Kulper is an incredibly gifted storyteller!
By Cait
Received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

If I could only describe “Salt & Storm” in one phrase it would be HOLY WOW! Kendall Kulper is an incredibly gifted storyteller. I was completely captivated from page one as the stakes were life and death (literally). Not a bad way to hook a reader… ;)

An utterly gut-wrenching and surprisingly realistic exploration of first love. What made it so beautiful is the many kinds of love Kulper explored: love for Avery’s home, heritage, family, friends, and Tane. Avery made for a wonderful protagonist, full of depth and passion and Tane was the perfect compliment. I felt like I was living her journey of self-discovery and falling in love right along with her. When her heart ached, mine ached.
When she realized she had fallen in love (swoon), I felt like I had fallen in love.

The world Kulper built was superb—she clearly did her homework, even though the author admitted it wasn’t entirely historically accurate. But, hey… that’s the beauty of fantasy fiction! I mean… witches. Each character felt fleshed out in their own way (even the supporting or minor characters), which is no easy task. The island felt like its own character—she took on a life of her own. I truly believed Prince Island held some sort of supernatural power over the Roes. One of my favorite things an author can do is with language. The way her characters spoke was perfection. The intricacies of the dialects had this theater nerd jumping for joy!

A truly original piece of literature. To those of you who tend to stay away from YA or Fantasy—don’t let the genre fool you… I know I’m repeating myself, but: Kendall Kulper is one hell of a gifted & sophisticated storyteller. Cannot recommend it enough!

I know what my dream means. I will be killed. I will be murdered. And I've never been wrong before.
By Jenn Goetz
So, I know absolutely nothing about whaling, which I assume is like most people, so Salt & Storm opened this whole new world.

Avery Roe comes from a long line of Roe witches, women who protect Prince Island and ensure the success of the whalers. Raised by her grandmother since her own mother refuses this life, Avery dreams of the day when she will take her place as the Witch. But before Avery can come into her full powers, her mother shows back up and takes Avery, hoping to raise her away from magic.

Avery is not completely without magic. She possess the ability to read dreams and does this for the sailors without her mother knowing. Every day she plans her escape back to her grandmother to continue her training but then she has the dream. The dream that tells her she will be murdered. With the clock racing, Avery's determination to get back to her grandmother rises and she meets Tane, a tattooed harpoon boy from a whaler's ship docked in their port. Tane also possess magic and promises to help Avery if she helps him and reads his dreams.

This book was nothing as I expected. Avery was very determined but also a little blind. She saw what she wanted to see: a life stolen from her, a mother who didn't love her. Which was believable at her age, why would she question anything else? She was on a journey...one that included first love. Her romance with Tane didn't overpower the book. Instead, it burned slowly throughout. While they both were discovering their fates, they were also discovering each other. While they didn't have me swooning, I loved reading about their times together.

Kulper did a lot of research for this book. One of my favorite parts about this read was the author note at the end where she explained how she went about writing Salt & Storm. A delightful debut novel from Kulper and I look forward to reading more from her.

Amazon.com Review
Roses Are Red, James Patterson's sixth Alex Cross thriller, opens with the District of Columbia detective attempting to mend his nearly unraveled family. The year-long kidnapping of one's intended (1999's Pop Goes the Weasel) will do that to a relationship. Christine, the kidnappee, is amenable with one reasonable condition: that her family's horizon remain uncluttered by homicidal maniacs. How unfortunate, then, that the joyous christening of their newborn son is rudely interrupted by the FBI bearing news of several heinous murders requiring the attention of detective (and doctor of psychology) Cross. "Three-year-old boy, the father, a nanny," Kyle said one more time before he left the party. He was about to go through the door in the sun porch when he turned to me and said, "You're the right person for this. They murdered a family, Alex."

As soon as Kyle was gone, I went looking for Christine. My heart sank. She had taken Alex and left without saying good-bye, without a single word. Which leaves Cross free to hunt the Mastermind, the barbarous brains behind a widening series of bank robberies in which employees or their family members are held hostage and, when instructions aren't followed to the finest iota, slaughtered. Given the cases' glaring and unfathomable inhumanity, Cross's long- time DCPD partner (the wonderful giant, John Sampson) gives way to the warm, attractive, and fiercely intelligent FBI Agent Betsey Cavalierre.

The longer and harder Cross and Cavalierre remain on his trail, the bolder and more brutal--and shiveringly close to home--the Mastermind's strikes become. And, thanks mostly to lightning-short paragraphs and a point of view that rappels from the first-person Cross to the third-person Mastermind, the tale progresses at hot-trot speed to a bona fide doozy of a denouement. It'll be over before you know it, so sit back, hold your breath, and enjoy the show. And stay tuned for the next one. --Michael Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Alex Cross is backAand that alone will have this novel crowning bestseller lists, a feat Patterson's books have achieved often of late, both his Cross (Pop Goes the Weasel) and non-Cross (Cradle and All) thrillers. Patterson won an Edgar for his first novel, The Thomas Berryman Number, but he hasn't won one since. One reason is that his prose, though sturdy as a trusted rowboat, is just as wooden; another is that his plottingAhere detailing Washington, D.C., homicide detective Cross's pursuit of a crazed but crafty homicidal criminal known as the MastermindAis about as sophisticated as that of a Frank and Joe Hardy tale. So why are the Cross novels so popular? In part because Patterson constructs them out of short, simple sentences, paragraphs and chapters that practically define the brisk, fun, E-Z read, and in part because, here and elsewhere, he engages in the smart and unusual tactic of alternating third- and first-person (from Cross's POV) narrative. Mostly, though, readers adore them because Cross is such a lovable hero, a family-oriented African-American whose compassion warmly balances the icy cruelty of Patterson's villains and their sometimes graphically depicted crimes (as is the case here). In the new novel, Cross suffers lady problems as his old love, who's in terror of Cross's job, leaves him, and he fumbles toward a new romance with an FBI agent; he also suffers personal trauma as his beloved daughter develops a brain tumor. That's back-burner action, though. The main focus here is, first, on a series of shocking Mastermind-engineered bank robbery/kidnappings involving wanton killings and, second, on the hunt to ID the MastermindAa hunt both absorbing and annoying for its several (rather smelly) red herrings, and concluding with a revelation that screams sequel. While there's nothing subtle in this novel, every blatant element is packaged for maximum effect: roses may be red, but Patterson's newest is green all the way. From Booklist
Alex Cross, Patterson's detective hero, is back in a thriller that is guaranteed to hold his many fans spellbound. This time around, Cross' nemesis is the Mastermind, a cunning bank robber who recruits teams of criminals to do his dirty work while he orchestrates the crimes from the shadows. What makes the Mastermind especially frightening is that he takes the bank executives' families hostage in order to ensure compliance, and he kills in cold blood, seemingly at random. Cross is called in on the case, but he may have more than he can handle on his plate. His girlfriend has left him, his beloved daughter is in the hospital, and an old enemy has popped up. But Cross throws himself into the Mastermind case, aided by an attractive FBI agent named Betsey Cavalierre. Despite their resourcefulness, the Mastermind always seems to be a few steps ahead of them, even when the case seems to be coming together. Patterson keeps the pages turning all the way up to the jaw-dropping conclusion, which is sure to have readers eagerly awaiting the next Cross novel. Roses Are Red is far superior to Patterson's most recent novels and should impress readers who enjoyed his earlier Cross books, such as Along Came a Spider (1993) and Kiss the Girls (1995). This one is not to be missed. Kristine Huntley

Patterson back in top form
By AlexanderL
After the disappointing "Cradle and All" Patterson is back in the vein of his sensational bestsellers "Along came a Spider", "Kiss the Girls" or "Cat and Mouse". This may be his best novel with his most evil villain yet. The Mastermind even tops Gary Soneji, Casanova or the Weasel. The end will simply blow you out of your shoes.

A Good, Exciting Read!
By "Nuff Said
I like Alex Cross books and this one is one of the better ones that James Patterson has written. The ending is sure to keep readers waiting for the next one as it even surprised me. I read this book on a 10 hour plane flight and completed it so it is a fast read. Here I had planned on sleeping on the flight and ended up not sleeping a wink because I couldn't keep my head out of this book!

Not a bad way to pass a gloomy day.
By Loki Shams
Let's see. This is the first James Patterson novel I have read. It was a pretty good, extremely fast paced read. I was a little skeptical reading first person form (which I am not fond of), but Det. Alex Cross, was quite an interesting character. This is a sequel of sorts to a previous novel "Kiss the Girls", in which the good guy, Det. Alex Cross is crime solving again. I don't know if any characters other than Cross were in Patterson's other novel, since I have not read it yet. (But I plan to)
In this suspenseful drama, there is a lunatic out on the loose in the DC area. He is called the Mastermind. He truly is masterful, because he leaves no clues and is meticulous about everything he does. His reasons are understood by no one. He definitely enjoys the killing and preying on of innocent people. Nothing he does adds up to Det. Cross and the FBI. We are swept into a world of crime, where nothing makes sense. I was on edge wanting to know what will happen next. And believe me, some of you will be shocked by the outcome. (although I had my suspicions)
This book was better than I expected. I was a little annoyed with the page and a half chapters (125 chapters in a 300 page book,is a little extreme), but that seems to be Patterson's writing technique. He is a good author, and I suggest giving him a try.

Amazon.com Review
2nd Chance reconvenes the Women's Murder Club, four friends (a detective, a reporter, an assistant district attorney, and a medical examiner) who used their networking skills, feminine intuition, and professional wiles to solve a baffling series of murders in 1st to Die. This time, the murders of two African Americans, a little girl and an old woman, bear all the signs of a serial killer for Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to lieutenant of San Francisco's homicide squad. But there's an odd detail she finds even more disturbing: both victims were related to city cops. A symbol glimpsed at both murder scenes leads to a racist hate group, but the taunting killer strikes again and again, leaving deliberate clues and eluding the police ever more cleverly. In the meantime, each of the women has a personal stake at risk--and the killer knows who they are.

2nd Chance speeds along at a Formula One pace through many tight curves, but unlike recent entries in the Alex Cross series, it doesn't sacrifice good characters to a twisted plot. Lindsay's the star, but there's a fine esprit de corps among the four women, who are even better developed here than in the first book. What makes them both convincing and interesting as a criminal-justice juggernaut is their willingness to stick their necks out, even if they suffer for it. If you haven't picked up a James Patterson novel in a while, this is a great time to start anew. --Barrie Trinkle

From Publishers Weekly
It's been a long time since we've seen a bestselling author of Patterson's clout credit an assistant author on the cover, and good for Patterson for that. The credit is deserved. This is Patterson's richest, most engaging novel since When the Wind Blows and, as the second in his Women's Murder Club series (after 1st to Die), yet more evidence that this prolific writer can roam beyond Alex Cross with style and success. Like all Pattersons, the narration mixes first and third person the first here is voiced, as before, by San Francisco homicide detective Lindsay Boxer, while the third-person sections cover the doings of the other three members of Boxer's informal club, a reporter, a pathologist and a prosecutor, as well as the villain's shenanigans. The basic story line is vintage Patterson, i.e., a serial killer (here, one known as Chimera) goes on a calculated rampage until stopped by the good guys or in this case, gals. As the victims a young girl shot dead, an elderly black woman hanged, two cops pile up, it becomes clear to Boxer and others that they're up against a racist who hates black cops; is the killer a cop himself? The story ripples with twists and some remarkably strong scenes, particularly Boxer's in-prison interview with a crazed con. But what makes this Patterson stand out above all is the textured storytelling arising from its focus on Boxer's personal issues. In the first novel, Patterson personalized Boxer by dealing with her rare blood disease; here, it's the emotionally powerful introduction of Boxer's long-lost father into her life that galvanizes the plot, particularly as Patterson ties the man into Chimera's rampage. Prime Patterson; first-rate entertainment. (On sale Mar. 4)Forecast: Patterson's name, major ad/promo and a 10-city author tour add up to #1; simultaneous Time Warner Audio and large-print edition.

Same Formula as 1st to Die
By TJ's Mommy
I had to give this book four stars, but only because it follows the EXACT same formula as the first book. The plot is still very exciting and the story grabs you. I made the mistake of reading one right after the other and it became too predictable to how the story was going to end. I would highly recommend this book, but not right after you've read the first one.
In this novel you follow the Women's Murder Club again, but this time it is a serial sniper that is taking people out. There is a "women's" story intertwined, though not love this time, but there's a pregnancy and Lindsay is reunited with her dad. Patterson does a good job casting suspicion on certain characters to sidetrack you. The end will surprise the reader, but only as to who the killer actually is. You think you've caught him, but have you really? Same formula as the first one...

He's back in the saddle again!
By Karen Kirsch
If you're looking for great fiction, don't read James
Patterson. If you're looking for a fast-paced, fast-read
mystery, then you might want to pick up this book. "First
to Die" was the first in the Women's Murder Club mysteries.
Loved it! This one didn't disappoint me. The premise of
a homicide detective, D.A., coroner, and news writer combining their talents and intellect to solve a mystery is quite innovative. "2nd Chance" begins with a murder that might be
viewed as a hate crime. However, with the help of her best
friend the coroner, Lindsey the detective sees another pattern forming. Another killing that leads in a totally different direction. Then, just when you think you know the
outcome...yikes! there are still 70 pages to go. Lindsey's dad returns after a 20 year hiatus. Sympathize or suspect
While I love those books that I can savor over a week's time,
I also love those I can't put down until I finish it the same
day. Patterson is a same day read...

One of his better books...
By J.B.
Lately, I've been doubting James Patterson's ability to turn out a decent read. "When the Wind Blows" didn't work for me. "Cradle and All" just seemed silly. "1st to Die" was a great thriller, and it is followed by another great thriller, "2nd Chance."
The Women's Murder Club is back in business when a killer strikes San Francisco, commiting hate crimes. Lindsay Boxer, the newly appointed Lieutenant, joins her pals Cindy, Claire, and Jill to solve the mystery.
The plot of "2nd Chance" moves along rather quickly, rarely stopping for a breather. When Lindsay isn't dealing with the stresses of her job, her personal life is there to stress over. Her father returns to get a second chance at being a good dad, she finds out one of her friends is pregnant, and she still is trying to cope with the fact that Chris Raleigh is dead.
"2nd Chance" is one of Patterson's better books. It moves the plot forward with every page, but doesn't feel rushed. It reassured me that the Patterson that wrote amazing thrillers wasn't dead... he was just sleeping. Here's to hoping he continues this series with another strong installment.
