The Harry Bosch Novels Volume 2: The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, Angels Flight, by Michael Connelly

The Last Coyote: LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch is suspended from the force for attacking his commanding officer. Unable to remain idle, he investigates the long-unsolved murder of a Hollywood prostitute. Trunk Music: Harry returns to the force to investigate the murder of a movie producer with Mafia ties. Up against both the LAPD's organized crime unit and the mob, Harry follows the money trail to Las Vegas, where the case becomes personal. Angels Flight: The murder of a prominent African-American attorney who made his career suing the police for racism and brutality means that Harry's friends and associates have become suspects; and he must work closely with longtime enemies suspicious of his maverick ways to investigate them. Together for the first time, these three chilling, pulse-pounding novels chart the volatile, breakneck career of the sleuth the New York Post calls "the quintessential mystery book hero" and prove that "Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch novels are the most impressive body of work by any writer of crime thrillers now active" (Washington Post).

Detective Harry Bosch Hits His Stride
By D. R. Jeanclerc
Former newspaper reporter Michael Connelly has been writing intriguing and suspenseful novels for his Harry Bosch protagonist for over a decade now. The first six of these novels have been collected into two hardcover omnibus volumes.

The first volume is certainly required reading if you want to understand the complete background and motivations of this brooding LAPD detective who won't tolerate injustice or any human vice that feeds it either directly (corruption, politics) or indirectly (bureaucracy, laziness, incompetence). They're interesting reads for sure, especially "The Concrete Blonde". However, those earlier stories expose Connelly as a new novelist unsure of what type of character Bosch is destined to be.

This second volume is the work of a much more seasoned and confident author writing about a multi-dimensional and human character. Without giving away any spoilers, I'll say that these three books develop Bosch well beyond just a grim crime-solving automaton who moves from case to case in a very detached manner. He goes after crimes that have personal significance and he undertakes situations outside his role as a police detective. The result is that by the time you turn the last page, you'll be hooked on the Bosch character, not just the stories of the crimes he's solved. That's the hallmark of a great fiction series.

Plus, these three stories are varied and intriguing in their own separate ways. The universe of characters that surround Bosch rotate in and out in ways that are highly interesting without being incredible. "Trunk Music" stretches this point a bit with a story that throws in every angle imaginable and almost loses its way. However, "Angels Flight" rebounds superbly and gets my vote for the finest book of either volume.

These volumes are must-haves for anyone interested in getting acquainted with one of the best mystery writers working today. At a price less than the cost of three paperbacks, you get a well-bound and attractive hardcover book, making this package a wonderful value as well.

From Publishers Weekly
In an ambitious effort that is equal parts history, sensationalized gossip and political expos‚, London Sunday Times investigative reporters Levy and Scott-Clark trace the winding path of the so-called "Stone of Heaven." The story begins in 1735, when jade-obsessed Chinese emperor Qianlong endeavors to extend China's reach into present-day Burma, reputed to contain the world's finest jade. Over time the infatuation with jade also infects French and British colonials, adventurers, Chinese gangsters, Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong, all of whom energetically loot the Imperial Court's treasures. Descriptions and provenances of legendary jade pieces (some of which are lost for centuries at a time) are given at length. Among the history's cast of characters is bad-girl Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton, who receives a tabloid treatment of her jade collection, marriages, sexual misadventures and profligate spending. But the history, the gossip, even the sensational stories of the depredations of the indigenous tribes who fiercely protected their secret jade mines, pale in comparison to the authors' visit to Burma. Risking their lives, Levy and Scott-Clark pose as gemologists and, with guile, courage and bribery, reach Hpakant, home to the mines. There they find hundreds of thousands of destitute people virtually enslaved amid prostitution, government-sponsored heroin addiction, and "jade disease, or AIDS." The story of the quest for jade ends abruptly in a kind of hell, rendered as astutely as the excesses in this intriguing history. 40 b&w photos. This book's various elements rest uneasily together; no doubt, most readers will be lured by the romance of jade, but in fact the book's strongest point is its horrifying conclusion.

From Booklist
This mesmerizing chronicle interweaves legend, mythology, and history with a shocking contemporary expose of the Burmese jadeite mines. Before visiting the deplorable mining pits in Myanmar (formerly Burma), the authors embarked on a circuitous research odyssey, retracing the colorful history of the valuable gemstone. Unearthing letters, diaries, and maps and interviewing countless numbers of jewelers and collectors, they pieced together the fascinating tale of a stone so beautiful and exotic that it was said to cast a spell on emperors and commoners alike. Curious as to the current state of the jade industry, they posed as representatives of an Australian mining company to gain permission to visit the so-called Valley of Death, the legendary hills of jadeite in northern Myanmar. Once there, they were shocked to find all the rumors true: the jade mines were a cesspool of abuse, disease, promiscuity, and drug addiction, promoted and sanctioned by the military, the mining companies, and the government. An engrossing combination of narrative history and undercover journalism. Margaret Flanagan

Far Beyond Imperial Jade
By Gloria T August
I have given this book away twice because of my own recommendation of it. It is a very important book not just for the story it tells on Imperial Jade but because of it introduces us to the Empress Dowager as we have not experienced her before. One of the most important parts in this story is the visit of the English women (amongst others) to the Empress Dowager. Here we experience the very human side of the Empress Dowager and the hilarious juxtaposition of the English women in accessing this extraordinary woman and how it was that the Empress Dowager saw them. I believe that through books like this and others that we are beginning to see China and the depths of her ordinary and extraordinary people as a wealth shared by no other civilization. This may be a book on imperial jade but it is far, far more and far deeper than that which means this book is a classic.

An excellent and thorough read
By Richard Harrold
Levy and Scott-Clark are excellent story tellers, and do they ever have a story to tell. Tracing the history of imperial green jade, or jadeite, they begin in the late 18th century with Chinese emperor Qianlong and 400 rivetting pages later end in present day Myanmar. Along the way the reader is exposed to the unrestrained profligacy of the Chinese emperors and the equally unrestrained ignorance and arrogance of the British colonialists. There is scheming and plots within plots as players in the Chinese dynasties kill their own progeny to ensure a malleable emperor will succeed. The plundering by the British of the old Imperial summer palace is shocking, and the primitive warfare of the Kachin in Burma is horrifying. Levy and Scott-Clark's descriptions put the reader right into the midst of the action: the writing is so effective that you can feel the clinging humidity of the Burmese jungle as 19th century British explorers plod along in search for the mines from whence the jadeite is extracted.
Also of tremendous interest were the passages about the Dowager Empress Cixi. If all you know about the last emperor Pu Yi is from the wonderful movie "The Last Emperor," this book will help round out some of the events and issues driving the Pu Yi story along that were alluded to in the movie. Besides, the movie's only allusion to Cixi is in the very beginning when the toddler Pu Yi is brought to the Forbidden City. Levy and Scott-Clark reveal to the reader from where Cixi came and how her desire for the jadeite was often at the core of her political machinations.
And then there are the final chapters that reveal a scenario so horrifying, so shocking that even the surrealistic visions of Francis Ford Coppola in "Apocolypse Now" cannot compare.
This is definitely the best book I've read so far this year, and probably the best book I've read in the past five years. After reading this book you will not be able to look at another piece of jadeite, no matter how beautiful, and not whince because now you know the stone's infamous history.

Jade: builder, and destroyer, of empires
By VampireCowboy
This was a strange book that was oddly compelling. It was really like two books in one: 70% history devoted to the superstitions surrounding jade, its history -- in terms of mining -- and the way the pursuit of the precious stone shaped countries, careers, and legends. The other 30% was more like a first person mystery and a journalistic effort to expose current conditions in jade producing mines.

It seems an odd balance. I wish the authors had devoted more to the 70% and less to the 30%, which could have been a book in its own right.

Still, it was packed with the kind of illuminating bits information I find so intriguing and makes for a reading experience much like mining - pursuing seams for hidden treasures. It was also overflowing with decadent imperial courts thrown into disarray by modernity (it would seem), war looters, and dealers in antiquities which raised many questions about the current repatriation of plundered and even "legally" purchased archaeological and national works of art.

What I like best about works of history is learning nuggets of information and making connections for myself. The Stone of Heaven facilitated that.

Supremely crafted biography of Douglas MacArthur.
By Mike Powers
"American Caesar " is William Manchester's superbly crafted and supremely well researched biography of Douglas MacArthur, one of the greatest but most controversial military leaders in American history. MacArthur has been praised for his brilliant strategic and tactical abilities during both world wars and accomplishments as Military Governor in post-World War II Japan, and criticized for his overweening egoism and inability to subordinate himself to the wishes of his civilian superiors.

William Manchester writes with wit and candor as he chronicles MacArthur's life from his earliest days to his death in 1964, at age 84. Manchester's portrait of his subject is balanced and objective. We see MacArthur at his finest: capable and courageous on the battlefield during World War I, rising quickly to general officer rank as a result of his abilities; between the world wars, a progressive, reform-minded superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy, and later U.S. Army Chief of Staff; during World War II, a Medal of Honor winner, and the gifted but overly vainglorious commander of all Allied forces in the South Pacific, who achieved brilliant military successes with his "island-hopping" strategy; and later, as Military Governor of Japan, displaying a surprising magnanimity toward the conquered Japanese by introducing American-style democracy and liberal reforms. We also see him at his worst: pompous and vain, always seeking personal glory, often at his subordinates' expense; vindictive toward his subordinates when they disagreed with him; and finally, during the Korean War, the Supreme Commander whose hubris led him to openly defy his commander-in-chief, resulting in his relief by President Harry Truman.

"American Caesar" clearly shows why William Manchester is one of the pre-eminent biographers at work today. The book is written with obviously meticulous scholarship, insightful analysis, and crisp, sparkling prose. It stands alongside fellow biographer D. Clayton James' three-volume "The Years of MacArthur," as one of the two best accounts of Douglas MacArthur's life available today. Highly recommended!

Biography at its very best.
By David J. Chmiel
It is a sad fact that many people in this day and age would be unable to state who Douglas MacArthur was or what place in history he has assumed. As the Second World War drifts further into the annals of history, the lives and accomplishments of the war's great commanders are in danger of , as MacArthur himself said "slowly fading away".
Douglas MacArthur was a colossus. He did not merely play an important role in the war in the Pacific, he dominated it and went on to play a crucial role in the West's early response to Communism in the Far East. William Manchester's exhaustive biography paints a warts and all portrait of the General. Manchester expresses rightful admiration for MacArthur's strategic brilliance and his amazing role in the recontstruction of post-war Japan. Yet, he does not shy away from criticism of MacArthur's extraordinary vanity which, in many cases, almost led (and during the Korean War did lead) to the General's downfall. I finished the book far more enlightened on the character of this individual and yet was left to draw my own conclusions as to his place in history.
Manchester's book is not just an immensely readable, throughly documented portrait of Douglas MacArthur. It also serves as a valuable work on the prosecution of the war in the Pacific and the early years of the Cold War and draws some very valuable and raises some interesting questions on the origin of America's entry into the war in Vietnam.
Individuals such as Douglas MacArthur should not be forgotten. Love them or hate them, they played a critical role in the history of the 20th Century and to the lives which each and every one of us live today. "American Casear" does justice to all aspects of Douglas MacArthur's life and character and I have no doubts that it will fascinate anyone who picks it up.
5 stars without any hesitation whatsoever.

THE FINEST REVIEW OF MAC ARTHUR
By A Customer
Manchester has produced a book that covers the entire life of the controversial five star general, from his infancy to his death, in the finest of detail and in a lively literary style. - If you want to know about MacArthur, this is the book for you. The author very carefully presents facts about the general and lets you the reader make up your mind on where the truth lies. Manchester does not appear to "take sides" in this book; he does not take the general and make him a god, nor does he denigrate what the general has done. He presents the many sides of this mysterious general and lets you, the reader, put it all together which is not difficult, since Manchester provides you the tools to do it: plenty of rich detail, plenty of quotes, excerpts of memos and messages, much detail on his private family life. Again, Manchester does not tell the reader what to think. For example, with the fall of the Philippnes, it seems that the general has made up his mind to stay and, along with his family, expects in a matter-of-fact way to commit suicide rather than be taken prisoner by the Japanese. You wonder about his wife and child, but Manchester doesn't tell you what they want to do: he lets them speak. - An excellent biography and significant historical account. Probably the best ever on MacArthur whether you like the general or not.

The Rise and Fall of Napoleon: The Rise v. 1, by Robert B. Asprey

Since his untimely death aged fifty-one in 1821, Napoleon Bonaparte has been too often the victim of biographical revisionism that treats him either as a demi-god or as devil incarnate. In the first of this monumental new two-volume biography, Robert Asprey has preferred to treat him as a human being. The Rise and Fall of Napoleon (Volume 1: The Rise) chronicles the beginning of this most extraordinary of lives, from Napoleon's birth in 1769 to the historic Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, when he brilliantly defeated the Austro-Russian armies. What emerges is both a fascinating and contradictory figure: a child of the French Revolution who grew to be its master; who exploited the national will for what he believed to be the national good; who converted the surging passions of thirty million persons into an irresistible force to challenge and often topple archaic thrones; whose desire for European reforms ultimately fell victim to feudal superstition and misery. Based on years of research, Robert Asprey tells this remarkable tale with the even-handedness such a major historical figure deserves. He presents Napoleon as he was - a man dedicated to his vision of himself and his empire.

A Page Turning Look at the Man, War, and Politics
By Adington
Robert Asprey in his twin hardcover volumes “The Rise and Fall of Napoleon Bonaparte” (reprinted in two softcover volumes as “The Rise and Reign of Napoleon Bonaparte”) offers a highly readable and strategically complete account of the period spanning Napoleon’s birth through his campaigns culminating at Waterloo, to the Emperor’s final exile and death.

What makes these 1000-plus pages shine is the author’s willingness to explore Napoleon’s persona, ambition, and strategic aims without fear of shouting down numerous historians whose critiques of the “little corporal” are seen as one-sided and overly harsh; equally so any sources seen as suspect or tainted.

Asprey writes in a sometimes-staccato style that soon becomes easy to the ear. His approach to Napoleon keeps pages turning at a rapid rate – and as a rarity in my case – offered a very real “one more chapter” urge. In their entirety, these twin tomes offered three small typos and one innocuous open-ended sentence that I came across.

Volume 1 takes the reader from Napoleon’s birth to Austerlitz, volume 2 the battle’s aftermath to illness-ridden death. If anything wants here it is the way volume 1 ends with Austerlitz’s guns still smoking – while volume 2 picks up in geopolitics. Setting up volume 2 with a segue describing Europe’s shock wouldn’t have gone astray at all.

Asprey’s “Rise and Fall” offers a solid path for those seeking a robust introduction to Napoleon “the man”, and the fate of Europe known as the “Napoleonic Wars”. Veteran readers will enjoy a well-researched argument that refreshingly omits parroting the scholarship of decades: “Napoleon bad – England good”. Where the author offers conjecture, he acknowledges dissenting views. Footnotes to sources appear at the end of each chapter.

Remember, however, that even in 1000 pages though nearly all battles may be described, room will only permit at times, a rudimentary coverage of the movements of corps and divisions. Often therefore, we will read of the arrival of a general at one city, and few sentences hence, of his appearance 100 miles away.

In this regard, Asprey does one thing very well where many books on military operations fail: maps.

Though only a few, whenever a place name in mentioned in the text, you’ll always be able to find it on a map. Not bad for some complex maneuvers across Germany, Poland, Spain, France, Italy, Austria, Russia, Egypt, and the Levant. Very rewarding in fact.

sufficient survey but not much of a history
By bookworm
I have almost been through the two books, and they read very quickly.
As a survey of events, these volumes are ok .. not sure if a Cole's Notes might give as much information in much less time!
The disappointment is that despite all the pages (700), there is not much space devoted to understanding this man; or the events he unleashes in Europe. The Napoleonic Code is almost a footnote. Apart from the Russian Emperor Alexander, other leaders are very shallow described.
And the battles are not very interestingly detailed either.
The bibliography is useful as a place to start.

A wonderful explanation of the new, computerized financial system
By D. Bates
This book was written 11 years ago, so some of its information is dated, but its basic premise has only become stronger: that the nature of money has changed from a tangible medium of exchange (i.e., cash) into a complex and chaotic system of computerized balance sheets and numerical flows.

The Federal Reserve estimates today that the entire worldwide supply of US money is currently about 10 trillion dollars ($10,000,000,000,000). This includes cash, savings accounts, checking accounts, money market funds, and other kinds of bank deposits.

But only 700 billion (or 7%) of these dollars are paper cash dollars circulating outside of bank vaults, of the sort you can carry in your wallet. If everybody wanted to cash out their bank accounts at the same time, there simply wouldn't be enough paper dollars to go around. Banks would have to close temporarily while the Federal Reserve printed more cash. I don't know how long it would take to print 9 trillion more paper dollars ... let's see, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing typically prints $40 billion per year, so at current production levels it would take over 200 years to print all the cash required if everybody demanded all their cash at the same time.

The kind of money you can hold in your hand is pretty much obsolete.

Unless you are a drug dealer, you probably pay for most of your purchases with checks, credit cards, or debit cards. You might also pay for some of your purchases via automatic deductions or e-banking. This book vividly explains the complex, evolving, and essentially uncontrollable system underlying these non-cash forms of payment.

Nothing in economics happens randomly
By Golden Lion
1.Computer nerds and mathematicians see Wall Street as a mathematical puzzle to find new ways of managing risk. The financial products that move markets and make big money are becoming more abstract. The managers of the new product abstract response to news and are quick to change.

2. A trading option is called a derivative. An option is derived from a stock; the option is the right to purchase a specific stock or stock group, currency, or bond for a predetermined price, sometime in the future. Options have a value and can be traded for a price.

3. Options are traded on the futures market, stock market, special options market, and electronically between investors.

4. If you buy a call option, you have a right to buy a specific index, stock, currency, or bond at a prearranged price anytime before that option expires.

5. Put options are options to sell a stock or other product at some specified time in the future for a specified price. If you sell a put option, you either have to have the stock, index, or bond on hand, or be prepared to buy it and hand it over when the option is called.

6. Options are a type of futures contract. Options differ from futures because you are not obligated buy the underlying product. Suppose, you bought an option to purchase an S&P500 index for $380 between July5 and Jan5 and during this time the stock rises to 392.70 and you exercise the option. You take the profit of 12.70 less the cost of the option. Suppose the prices of the stock drops then you either try to sell your option to someone else before it expires, or you let the option expire and you loss the cost of the option.

7. According to Markowitz, the law of statistics dictates how much diversification is optimal. A portfolio of twenty stocks selected from different groups gives you about as much protection as is theoretically possible. The Markowitz model was able to quantify risk.

8. Beta 1.2 means for every 10 percent the market moves up or down, the stock has a risk of moving 12 percent in either direction. If a portfolio had a beta of 2, it was twice as risky as the market in general. The profolio would have to return twice the return of the market to justify the risk. Markowitz thought, a portfolio manager would continuously adjust his portfolio so that reward was commensurate with the risk. Picking stocks meant picking stock that conformed to certain mathematical rules.

9. The biggest users of quantifiable stock picking were state pensions funds, union pension funds, and insurance companies. These big funds control about 60 percent of the nation's stocks and bonds.

10. Stock pickers who patiently studied companies, visited sites, talked with managers, and cared about the companies health-were pitted against quants who were interested only in portfolio total return.

11. Quants had divorced his traditional role of bringing capital to a company in return for a share of the profits and a share of the company's net worth. Instead, it became the job of the investor to pile up overall returns.

12. Companies were forced to offer some sort of return that a money market fund might pay or risk having the price of their shares collapse. Collapsing share prices could result in a takeover. Companies became less concerned about how they created money, only that they created money. Selling off portions of the company, borrowing money in the capital markets and then paying it out to stockholders as dividends and using profits to buy back stock, as a practice to keep stock price high. The company matter less than its stock.

13. C=SN[D]-Xe^rtN[D-oVT] where S-the current price of the asset, N-probablity the term in bracket will be worth less than it ought to be, D-Term, X-Strike or exercise price of the option, r-the interest rate, o - asset volatility, T-time until the option expires.

14. Fedwire running IBM 370 is operated by the New York Fed, one of twelve regional Federal Reserve Banks. Fedwire processes on the average 150,000 transactions per minute. Citibank clears through Fedwire as much as $50 billion in checks in a single night.

15.The Fedwire system has ten thousand nodes-banks, savings and loans, credit unions, and other institutions that issue or receive deposits or checks. All the major banks in the US deal with the Fed through Fedwire. On the average $1 trillion pass through Fedwire as banks exchange checks and borrow from one another and from the Fed itself to cover their overnight shortfalls.

16. Through the Bank of New York the Fed buys and sells government bonds and nots settle accounts between banks and regulate the economy. When the Fed is buy notes, it is putting downward pressure on interest rates by adding money to the system. When the Fed is selling liquidity is being soaked up, interest rates rise, and the economy slows down.

17. Banks trade securities among themselves.

This book will wake you up to the new world of money and how it got to where it is today.
By Robert I. Muson
This book filled in all the "holes" in my education in the area of money and economics. It gives a detailed history of the evolution of money from the beginning days when money had it's own intrinsic value, thru the moment when Nixon took the dollar off the gold standard to the present where money now exists as an abstraction, just numbers on a computer screen backed by nothing. The author distinguishes between the real economy and the financial economy, and how the financial economy created an interest driven, electronic economy that is now completely out of touch with the real economy, having a life of its own with no regard for human beings or anything else other than numbers and the financial well being of the people who know how to manipulate those numbers. He points out the social implications and destabilizing effects of this new money system on individuals, families, businesses, countries and on the future of our species. What is now required is a new level of integrity and trust. The level of integrity that was sufficient to operate in in the real economy of yesterday, is no longer sufficient for relating to, and operating within, the interest driven, electronic economy that is backed by agreement and trust alone. What I got out of reading this book is that money is no longer what I thought it was. I relate the new economy of money to driving a car. When we all got our driver's license, we agreed (in the US) to drive on the right side of the road. For the most part (with the exception of drunkenness etc) we all keep that agreement. Keeping that agreement creates a condition of workability. It allows for a consistent flow of traffic so that each of us can successfully reach our destination. We also trust that other drivers will keep their agreements about driving on the right side of the road, that "red" means stop and "green" means go etc etc. Driving is a system based on agreements and trust. Included in this system are strong consequences (laws) if people break their agreements. Driving on the left side of the road not only endangers lives, but also will lead to strict fines, loss of the privilege to drive and, perhaps jail time. This is a perfect analogy for the new economy. It is based solely on agreement and trust.
The author points out that what's missing are: 1. consequences (stricter laws) for people who violate that trust and who break their agreements, and, 2. people waking up to how the new non-money economy works. This book is that wake-up call
Although published in 1993, it is absolutely relevant today and into the future.

I have a fairly sizeable collection of Titanic books, but until now I had nothing written and illustrated specifically for children. Ken Marschall is a consummate illustrator and his artwork in this book is stunning. One of the important things is that the story is about two real children - one in first class; one in steerage - who were actually on the Titanic. While, even for kids, there can be no happy ending to this story, the book follows the main characters' lives past the sinking and rescue, into adulthood, and till their deaths. The story is written with low-key emotion, and is more factual than overwhelmingly sad. The story of the Titanic is almost 100 years old but the lessons we learn from it today are as important as those learned back in 1912. It's an important true story, well worth purchasing to read with your kids.

A beautiful and mouth-watering book
By Dennis Littrell
Not only are the photographs of the wild foods and dishes made from those foods simply gorgeous, they are also artfully and artistically staged. Yes, staged. For example the photo of wild bergamot, spicebush and sweet fern herbal teas (in clear glass and china tea cups) is set among greenery and flowers of bergamot and leaves of sweet fern and a cut lemon resting on old lace. Seaweed dishes are shone with the ocean and rocks in the background; Wild apples rest on the green grass overflowing from a wooden bucket with roast pork and a clear glass jar of the jelly behind; fish lie upon a bed of fennel on a rack over a fire upon a rock near water...

Phillips arranged the presentations and the recipes beginning in the spring of the year featuring young leaves and shoots to be picked and eaten in the merry month of May. Then come the summer flowers and herbs, teas, seaweeds, and then desert plants and then mushrooms. In the fall near the end of the book there are berries and fruits, nuts and seeds and finally roots. The mushroom dishes are really spectacular: morels in cream, morels in a wild rice casserole, chanterelle bread and chanterelles in an omelet. Phillips photographed the mushrooms as picked and also the mushrooms as they appear in the recipes again with natural backgrounds.

Phillips gives the parts of the US in which the wild foods can be found (although he fails to note that blackberries can be found in California), and how to gather the foods and process them. He gives warnings about five "dangerous edible plants," pokeweed, sassafras, cowslip, lamb's-quarters and pigweed, and how to avoid the danger.

The strength of this book is clearly in the photos and the recipes. The weakness? Well, this is not as extensive as some wild foods books I've read and the recipes rely heavily upon cream, eggs, butter, chicken broth and other ingredients that remind me of France's grande cuisine which is currently out of fashion. Phillips did the research and the traveling with his wife and young daughter in the 1980s. The book was published in 1986.

Note that the book measures 8.5 by 11.5 inches so that the glossy photos are large enough to be easily appreciated.

Incredibly gorgeous photos & recipes, excellent information!
By Taylor-Perry
I have shelves full of foraging references, and this is by far the most stunningly beautiful one I own, with some of the best recipes (the recipe for chanterelle sweetbread should NOT be missed!) Roger Philips is an excellent botanist, forager, cook, and photographer; I highly recommend his work to anyone interested in the subject, from beginner to advanced forager.

From Publishers Weekly
When 30-something novelist Gibson (Shelter) moves to New York from Virginia, he plans to establish himself as a writer, get a day job and enjoy life in the city he's considered "the sunken treasure I'd been diving for my whole life." Instead, as this enigmatic memoir chronicles, he finds a strangely quiet apartment share, struggles to secure a menial job and rarely touches his computer. He barely sees his roommate, John, "who was as pale and waxy and elongated as a candle," whom he meets through a gay roommate service. But one night, Gibson is "bolted awake" by the sound of John coughing: "It sounded like he was being clawed to death from the inside out." Most of the book-which, although it gives no specific time references, probably takes place within the past 10 years-focuses on Gibson's attempts to help the seriously ill John (he has lung cancer). Using sharp, often witty language, Gibson also expounds on his job at Telesessions, where he facilitates conference calls for doctors; his childhood in the homophobic South; and frequent phone conversations with his friend Jo Ann, who lives in upstate New York. Though Gibson's story has insightful elements, it bogs down occasionally, as when Gibson details his efforts to rescue an obese neighbor from his bathroom. Gibson eventually lands a position teaching writing and searches for a new place to live, relieved to move on, yet aware that sometimes "friends were family, and family were strangers, and you might find yourself helping someone... because you'd been yoked to them by accidents of commerce."

From Booklist
The reality of living in New York is hardly the lifestyle viewed on Friends or Sex in the City. Case in point is Gibson, who shares his version of New York life in a funny and moving memoir about his move to the Big Apple. Once there, he is the typical starving artist--eking out an impoverished existence, struggling through a variety of meaningless jobs while trying to make it as a writer. Through a series of hilarious anecdotes, we learn about what it's like to set up a life in a new city--the gay roommate service, the search for employment, and the constant rationalization that this move was the right thing to do. His new roommate, John, has an unacknowledged illness and a strange past. Gibson's best friend and sole consolation (besides alcohol and tobacco) lives 200 miles away, but her phone conversations and occasional visits make his life a little more bearable. Gibson's witty stories will ring true to anyone who has struggled to make it in any new place, large or small. Michael Spinella

Place This Book High On Your Must-Read List!
By Grady Harp
Wesley Gibson is an extraordinarily fine writer. YOUR ARE HERE: A Memoir of Arrival is that rare breed of book that combines autobiographical information filtered through a storyteller's gift of fiction that enhances the presence of the written word. And Gibson is such a finely tuned wordsmith that he is able to, within the space of one page, make the reader howl with laughter and then feel the internalized, longstanding turmoil that makes his characters so vital.
Raised in the South (Richmond, Virginia) with all of its odd family values, social codes, religiosity, and homophobia, Gibson concentrates his memoir on his transplantation to New York City,
the "HERE" of the title. Quite different from the end-of-the-rainbow aura that Gotham has for most writers and readers and artists and dreamers and, well, all of us, Gibson peels the layers off the city that never sleeps, letting us know just how difficult it is to exist there. His many jobs, his apartment hunting through the gay roommating service, his over the edge hypochondria, his work as a telemarketer, his endless attempts to be the writer he knows he can be... all of these themes are populated with curious people (few characters drawn in contemporary fiction are as hilarious-yet tragic as the morbidly obese Mr. McNally he has to rescue from the toilet seat). Curious, and yet tragic also: John his male nurse roommate whose horrendous cough ultimately is diagnosed as lung cancer, his other roommate Alan who is seen only briefly between the sounds of tricks, joyful Jo Ann his dearest friend, his own PWA dates from whom he attracts scabies, and the rest of the co-players in this novel.
Gibson peppers his memoir with many insights on being a gay man.
"To be gay is to live, with a certain hesitancy, however slight, out there in the world. Even when it only flickers through you, you can't help wondering how the day thing is going to play itself out with your sister's new husband, in that class you're teaching, at some stupid party. It's born from the understanding that the simple act of walking down the street could be enough to instigate the day of your death. etc" "I'd never been much of a theater queen, but I had my own longings of a literary kind, and as far as I knew, no amusing caricatures of me had ever appeared in the New York Review of Books, my Broadway. That was the problem with bars. Everyone's dreams seem to leak and get all over the floor." "In the mirror , I was still recognizably human; but the icy and amphibious blood of a New Yorker trying to survive was beginning to course through my veins." And "It seemed like a fitting inheritance for a world where friends were family, and family were strangers, and you might find yourself helping someone else to die because you'd been yoked to them by accidents of commerce and the mysterious trick of your own sexual nature and some fumbling attempt at compassion."
As usual, excerpts chosen from an excellent novel serve as the best criticism and notice of a writer's genius. Reading YOU ARE HERE is a joy and clearly one of those I-can't-put-it-down books that come around all too seldom. Highly recommended!

(4.5)A work of staggering genius
By Luan Gaines
Wesley Gibson is determined to get a foothold in New York City and escape the small town mentality of his southern roots. He jumps at an opportunity to rent an available room in an apartment where there are two roommates who never seem to materialize. The place boasts a plaid living room suite, tiny wizards made from crystals perched in groups on end tables and an answering machine with sixty messages and counting. So begins the life of a gay man in the city of his dreams.
Gibson reads like David Eggars, only I can track this writer's logic without losing my mind. At thirty-six, Gibson is an astute observer of humanity, starting with his own unnerving penchant for hypochondria. Faced with the unsolvable mystery of the ghost-roommates, John and Alan, Wesley is thrust into an emotional vacuum, struggling to find a job, depending on his also-neurotic friend Jo Ann to stabilize the waves of intermittent hysteria that overtake his best intentions. When Gibson finally does run across the primary roommate... well, that's a story you'll have to find out for yourself.
With shattering wit, Gibson shares life in New York City, his fragmented psyche, scrambling for work, living with a roommate in denial. New York is purposefully seductive: great crowds of strangers, anonymity and the gay social scene. Gibson writes with an abundance of humor; but when he grapples with a life and death situation, he has the necessary gravitas. This author's particular skill is that he is able to wax hysterical while his rowboat takes on water, a testament to his remarkable spirit and delightful personality.
Wesley addresses his youth and southern homophobia in the 70's with somber honesty. There, like vampires, gays only come out at night and in accepted venues; as young men bloom into manhood, their sexual antennae identify those who deviate from the norm. As for living gay in a straight world, "the simple act of walking down the street could be enough to instigate the day of your death."
Gibson is remarkably generous, with an abundance of imperfections, opinions and a serendipitous imagination, his view of the world penetrating and precise. For every humorous anecdote, there is one of reflection, unflinching in the glare of reality. This modern-day-gay man lives his days at full throttle or crushed into hypochondriac immobility, with an uncanny charm that embraces the reader as a bosom buddy. Gibson may not live the macho writer's life of an O'Hara or a Steinbeck, but he certainly speaks the most important language of all, the language of the human heart. Luan Gaines/2004.

A True and Funny Memoir
By Eric Anderson
For many young gay men who live in disparate communities around the country, New York City is the golden promise land that they strive to merge into once age and finances allow. The tale of an obscure individual arriving in the city with nothing and achieving fame beyond his wildest dreams has become an American myth. Wesley Gibson has written his own tale of travelling to the famous city where he hopes to establish himself as a writer. He lives under the threat that if he doesn't make it he will have to return to his hometown as a failure.
He casts the physical landscape of the city under the terms of a gay sensibility. For instance, he remarks: "Central Park is Martha, as in George and Martha, braying at you, `I do not bray.' It's too much of muchness." In this redefinition of the city he marks it as his own territory. It's also a clever way for the author to introduce his environment as a character itself. While the tone of the book remains that of a memoir, the people Gibson encounters are transformed into eccentric characters that stand alongside the colourful caricatures of Dickens' fictional world. In fact by the end he remarks that he feels a growing kinship to one of Dickens' greatest tragic females. This fictional cast to his life is borne out of a self-consciousness playfulness that comes through in his thought process, usually spurred on by morbid premonitions of doom. After hardly speaking to his new roommate he is on the phone to a close friend fearing that he's moved in with an axe murderer. Dramatic events are conceived in his mind and then the reality of the city asserts itself as stranger than anything this writer could have imagined.
Gibson describes the typical life of a writer, where little actual writing is accomplished, and a mass of experience is acquired. To make ends meet he tries different jobs and finds a room through a gay housing agency. These lead to hilarious encounters which highlight the absurdities of life like in the best writing of David Sedaris. However, much of the book is also concerned with the serious problems Gibson encounters such as depression, AIDS and isolation. He finds that having abandoned the threatening homophobic environment of his home in Virginia, the liberal big city does little to comfort this gay man. His first potential romantic encounter turns out to be a hustler looking for money and a place to crash for the night. A potential roommate with a large collection of extremely anatomically correct GI Joe figures proclaims that Gibson isn't a normal gay man. This lingering resentment of being outcast for not conforming to a certain image of a gay man haunts the memoir. It leads me to believe that Gibson has a much bigger fictional work ahead of him.
Nevertheless, YOU ARE HERE remains a funny, thoughtful account that many people will no doubt identify with for it's witty observations of cosmopolitan life.
