Written for children in 1933

Before reading this book you need to know that it was written in 1933, for children, and it shows. The language is of course old-fashioned and of its era, and can be enjoyed for that flavour, but if you want a serious and non-hagiographic biography written for adults you will need to look elsewhere. There is so much of interest in Louisa's early life - her dreamer father, her girlhood acquaintance with Emerson and Thoreau, her family's attempt at a commune - but none of it is adequately covered here, of course, as Cornelia Meigs was writing for children. The author also makes the amateur biographer's cardinal mistake of novelizing, painting scenes at which she not present and can have had no knowledge of. I couldn't finish it but at least it made me look around for a serious biography, of which there are several including one by Susan Cheever,

A Classic

I think that Invincible Louisa is a wonderful, well written book. No offence meant to the other reviewers of this book, but I think that Invincible Louisa did not drag along slowly at all. It is a wonderful book for 11, 12, and 13 year olds, or 10 year olds who are advanced in reading. However, to like this book, you have to like Little Women, or any other of Louisa's books. If you like books about American History, around the time of the Civil War, you will also probably like this book. It is a vivid account of Louisa May Alcott and her faimly's life. It tells how they struggled through poverty and other hardships that would have destroyed any other faimly's life.

The real-life Jo?

Quite an old book written in 1930s but this means she's closer to the people in the history, with some family members still living in the houses mentioned. Shows Louisa as a very likeable, hardworking character. She had a tough time growing up despite being loved by her parents. Almost made me cry a couple of times!

Incredible and extremely relevant

I first read this when I was sixteen and an avid reader, and thought it was the best book I had ever come across. After many years and becoming a Marine infantry officer, I recently read the book again and was forcefully struck by its power and authenticity. I am still an avid reader and I still think it is the best book I have ever read.
This book should be a must read for any infantryman, regardless of branch of service. It far surpasses the likes of Lima 6 or even Fields of Fire. It is certainly worth the effort of locating and buying. For those "non-grunts" out there, I recommend it just as emphatically.

My bear survived, but I'm not sure what happened to that book. Happily, I found this new Handbook. It still has instructions for making slings, as well as current information for dealing with all sorts of emergencies from cuts and burns to electrocutions and strokes. If you have an animal or a human bite, you generally need medical attention because of the likelihood of infection.
* If the victim has been seriously wounded, call EMS.
* If the victim was bitten by an animal, you will need to contact authorities so they can find out whether or not the animal was rabid.

1. Calm and reassure the victim. Put on latex gloves or wash your hands.
2. Check for bleeding. If the bite is not bleeding severely, wash it well (for at least 5 minutes) with mild soap and running water, then apply a bandage. If the bite is actively bleeding, control bleeding by applying direct pressure to the bite; by elevating the injured area; and, if necessary, by using pressure point bleeding control. Do not attempt to clean a wound that is actively bleeding.
3. Get medical help.

While the first aid portion of the book is very good, all of the CPR information is out of date and does not reflect the standards adopted in 2005. This includes the standards for adult, child, and infant CPR; child and infant rescue breathing, and unconscious choking for adult and child.

The book has much of what you expect in a first aid book. The one problem is that the book hasn't been updated in a long time. One of the treatments recommended was outdated and wrong.

Every household needs a first aid book and this is a good one.

Every household needs a first aid book and this is a good one. It is well written, easy to understand, and contains a wealth of information that can help you in every situation from a paper cut to a broken leg.

I picked this book in particular because of its affiliation with the Red Cross. I am not a health care worker but I figure I can have confidence in anything the Red Cross puts their name on even if it is a little out of date.

When I started looking through the book I learned many things and found that many of the things I thought I knew were wrong. This is a great book for people that want to be prepared when things happen.

His first collection of essays, The Cabin, gave Mamet enthusiasts the chance to see more directly what the author thinks about the world. The 24 brief essays, several published previously, in this collection share no overarching theme, but the playwright's fans can find evidence of his interests and obsessions. His purist love for drama is evinced in an homage to director Greg Mosher, a memoir of his youth immersed in off Broadway and his scorn for the decline of screenwriting into the predictable. Mamet displays his strong Jewish identity when lamenting the "psychic assimilation" that Jewish audiences and actors undergo and urging self-defense, rather than reason, in response to contemporary anti-Semitism. Playing poker has taught this old gambler lessons ("Trust everyone, but cut the cards"), but so has New Hampshire deer hunting. His take on the sexes veers between a wry memoir of writing captions for pornography and a gnomic meditation on sex and partnership. Most of these pieces evaporate rather quickly and a few sound self-important, but Mamet's writing remains spare and lucid.

Mamet, the playwright of such popular works as Glengarry Glen Ross and the screenplay The Untouchables, is known for his accurate use of ordinary language. His current title is a miscellaneous collection of short essays dealing with a variety of topics from his gambling experiences to his impressions of London, from his view of screenwriting to his opinion of the media's treatment of Nixon's death. In "Demagoguery," he decries the claim of television and computers (with their much-touted "information highway") that we will possess all information and "become God" by sitting down in front of them. Other essays deal with friends of Mamet, child abuse in his family, anti-Semitism, and his early jobs. Although they contain many vivid scenes, biographical details, and sharp observations of contemporary America, as a whole these essays seem like first drafts, somewhat less polished than his previous collection, The Cabin (Random, 1992) and filled with what one critic has called his "chatty non-sequiturs." Wow - What a smart guy!

Having been my first Mamet book, I was startled to realize just what an extraordinary talent lay beyond the creation of his play 'Glengarry Glen Ross.' Looking back, it was naive to think that a mere 'hack' could have written such an invective piece (which I first viewed as the popular major motion picture), that talent like that would be present in any endeavor. And that is the case with Mamet's 'Make-Believe Town : Essays and Remembrance.' I urge any fan, casual or dedicated, to read this book for Mamet's insight is spellbinding. It felt like I was actually spending time talking to the guy. Gosh. I really do love this book. -I'm gushing!

Pure Mamet

Mamet writes on a variety of subjects, some "of importance" others meerly ruminations on past events or experiences. This leads to a certain uneven nature, as some essays seem like throw-aways in light of their immediate neighboors in the book. By the same token, some of the lighter subjects are the best in the book.
Overall: very good and required Mamet reading for any fan.

A Collection of Essays

The 3 that I give this collection of essays is due to the fact that some of the essays are a pure delight and would earn the book a 5/5 stars, while others are down right offensive and whiney. I�d like to focus on the positive and say that any fan of Mamet should definitely buy this book. It is a quick read and a pleasure (mostly).
On the positive side, the book consists of 24 short essays, of which a few are among the most wonderful that I have ever read. Of particular interest was a story about gambling in Chicago. It is worded so beautifully, that the reader aches when it finishes. Another story is about his days as a copy editor on a pornographic magazine that is rather entertaining. Finally, there is an essay that all would-be writers will love called �The Diner� that discusses the craft of writing in relation to where one writes � as well as a number of takes on screenwriting, etc. I�ve left out a ton of great essays out, but this at least gives a window into the breadth that this book covers.
On the offensive side, I too am a Jew. However, Mamet becomes so �Us v. the Christian them� in some of the stories that I was actually turned off to him as a person. One essay criticizes �Shindler�s List� as being a terrible movie as if Mamet has ever written or directed anything as powerful. In another, he talks on the subject of minority rights in such a way that I want to slap him upside the head and tell him to quit his whiney driveling. Finally, in the wake of September 11th, his criticism of the government and their military actions were enough to cause me to put the book down.
As is always the risk in personal essays, some make me value Mamet as a talented writer, and some make me want to see his career come to a bitter end. The only way you too can judge is to buy this book and read it. At the end of the day, I�m happy I went on the journey� but wanted to warn you all about some of the sights.

What can be said about Sarah Kay and her poetry that hasn't been said before? Each piece she publishes is a must-have. The Type is no different.

Unlike B, I wasn't aware of the viral sensation that The Type was before it was published in book form. With B I had watched and listened to Kay read it numerous times before taking in the poem in text form. I got a chance to try experiencing this poet the other way around for The Type and I'm glad I had that chance.

I enjoyed this poem and its message. Like most of Kay's work, there's a strong message. There's honesty. There's humanity in the message and strong emotion. I read through it, and followed it up with watching a video of Kay reading it. Then I read through it again. Each time I enjoyed it more. It might not be very long, but it's worth taking the time to absorb slowly and often.

There are few poems that I feel could stand alone as their own "book" like this one. While the illustrations do also help with the experience, Kay's words makes it all worth it most of all.

About the Author
Jim Burke is a Gold Medal recipient from the New York Society of Illustrators and has won numerous other honors and awards of excellence. He is the illustrator for My Brothers' Flying Machine (2003), which received a starred review in Booklist, and A Christmas Gift for Mama (Scholastic, 2003).

Jack Norworth (1879-1959) was a successful singer and songwriter who performed on Broadway and vaudeville stages for over twenty years.

Occasionally a children's book is more than a children's book and that is the case with the sensational baseball song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game. The lyrics are by Jack Norworth and the illustrations are by Jim Burke.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game is a tribute to the game of baseball. In New York City, 1908, entertainer Jack Norworth had never seen a baseball game. But riding the elevated subway overlooking the Giants' field, he found himself inspired and jotted the lyrics to the great American song "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Later composer Albert Von Tilzer created the melody for the hit song. With this introduction, we experience the words of the song and fascinating facts about the game of baseball.

What a book! It is magnificent! The illustrations are nostalgic. Truly they are works of art, begging to be touched.

Follow the song (with Katie Casey) and the match-up between the New York Giants and the reigning World Series Champion Chicago Cubs. No matter who you are, where you live, or who you support in baseball, you'll be able to "Root Root Root for the home team. If they don't win it's a shame...."
